The Never-Ending Game of Dungeons & Dragons
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 жов 2017
- In 1982, when he was only 14 years old, Robert Wardhaugh sat down to play a game of Dungeons and Dragons. Thirty-five years later, that same game is still going strong. Based out of Wardhaugh’s basement in London, Canada, people from all around the country gather each week to join in the decades-long campaign. And with over 20,000 figurines and dozens of terrains, Wardhaugh keeps the game fresh and exciting, adding to the everlasting adventure.

After 35 years you may as well write your adventures into a fantasy novel
fantasy novel u can write after 1 year gaming
This shit is it’s own universe at this point
This implies the campaign is lesser than a novel. It's just two different mediums.
My friends and I are playing, going once a week. For the year, you can write a whole novel about our adventures.
Having an audience who would actually enjoy reading it would be a prerequisite. To be fair, I'm sure there are people out there who would. Dragon Lance was a thing for awhile, and while I couldn't stand it, many people enjoyed those books. While I enjoy D&D, grittier fiction, like game of Thrones, is what I prefer.

Kind of sounds like you think being a nerd is a bad thing considering the context of your use of the word. Being a nerd or consider other people to be a nerd isnt necessarily an insult. Wouldnt surprise me if Robert Wardhaugh consider himself a nerd and a proud one at that. But calling him a loser for being a nerd is kind of sad and shows insecurity.

K1naku5ana3R1ka the point is I never liked the alignment restriction on Paladins. I might want to play a Lawful Neutral Paladin who took up an Oath of Conquest to improve the nation they live in and generally just get shit done or a Chaotic Good Paladin that swore an Oath of the Ancients to preserve nature, regardless of the laws of men or gods.
@@lt.branwulfram4794 I'm glad 5e allows variety; one of my players wanted to be a Pally, and the thought of him playing anything but Chaotic was just--laughable. He's a walking Chaos machine.
Ultimately, though, I was glad he chose to be a Paladin of a Thor-ish kind of God of War, Music, and Revelry, because (since he's a newb) the rest of the party has to convince not to 1) become a murder hobo or 2) get a job at a local import business for 5s/day. God knows why. His newest plan? He wants to become an agricultural monopoly...at level 4. Literally saving up his share of the party loot to buy a chicken farm (his pally was a farm boy...)
As I said, walking Chaotic, but at least when he's around shit happens. I'm often forced to tapdance, but hey, it makes it lively for everyone.
Are we all going to ignore how beautiful he stated at the end that he did this so he could keep his friends together over the time. That was just beautiful.
*he also mentioned that it was to keep them his friends no matter what even if he were to be a murder or a demon they will keep coming and coming to just kill that one boss and just clear that one dungeon, but this campaign is infinite, and they are now stuck…. Forever.*
That terrain is incredible. It instantly draws you into the world and it's so original
So he must have multiple parties adventuring differant parts of his world, all making an impact on the timeline. That must be so cool to be a player, knowing that your not the only one making a differance. The world feels alive. There are parties of lvl 1s, parties of lvl 3s, and parties of max level characters going around..HOW AWESOME.

@@KortovElphame I mean you could but it isn't really the same. If you play Wargames you are generally limited to small skirmishes or pitched battles and a fairly rigid ruleset. In Warhammer for example, you can't really go to an Inn for the day to discuss your next move, or trick that one guard to handing you the keys to a dungeon. Wargames aren't particularly narrative in the same way D&D is. Wargames are pretty much battle oriented only unless you come up with your own rules. And as far as I'm aware, D&D and other RPGs are the only games where you can actually go around as a group with each member represented by a player. Just a thought.

As Canadian as it gets
imagine making a movie based off his 35 years of his journey in D&D
Now that is a true Dungeon Master right there.
Interesting premise, but really wish there was more information about the actual game he has been playing. D&D is all about storytelling and we got zero insight into the actual world he has built in the past 35 years. Impressive collection of miniatures, but missed the mark on the real story here.
vergeofsanity
I think you missed the mark and the point of the story.
No, I think I got it. He has a huge collection of miniatures to aid in his game, allowing for a good variety of settings and scenarios. He has people fly from around the country (and teleconference in from around the globe) to play in his game. And, he has been doing this for 35 years. It's interesting, to be sure, but it's only a surface level view of what makes this "Never-Ending Game of Dungeons & Dragons".
I think what bothers me is that the video leans on the premise that "the same game" has been going on for 35 years. I have not played D&D, but my understanding is that DMs set up scenarios and campaigns for the players. So, is the scenario he set up 35 years ago really still going? How in 35 years have his players not reached the end goal if this is the case? Or have they, and instead has he just been DMing 35 years of different campaigns? Are the players in the video the original players that started 35 years ago?
Does his game take place in one cohesive world? Or does it change from campaign to campaign? If it's all in the same world, surely 35 years of adventures in that world would have a "Great Big Story" to tell.
Robert says that the power of friendship keeps the game going, and that he had to make it the best game any of his friends had played to keep them coming back. But how does he do that? Yes he has a big table with lots of miniatures to move around, but again, that is just surface level. What is he doing in the game that keeps players coming back?
As I said in my original comment, a lot of what D&D is about is the story you are creating when you play. There is a story that Robert and his players are creating that has spanned 35 years, surely it must be an epic tale, one that draws people from around the country. Yet we got no insight into what that story is. What is this world they play in, how has it changed in 35 years? Who are the characters and how have they changed in 35 years? How many players have passed through this world in 35 years? What amazing things have they seen and done?
THOSE are the questions that should be answered. He even talks about how things are dynamic and growing. But HOW? Hearing that someone has been a D&D Dungeon Master for 35 years is impressive, but hearing the stories he has crafted is what is really interesting.
Vergeofsanity, completely agree, very disappointing video. D&D is not about miniatures.
vergeofsanity
"So, is the scenario he set up 35 years ago really still going?"
Possibly, yes.
I have played a couple of the boxed sets (big adventure campaigns). I played with two different groups about once a month or so. Both took us about ten years to play. Both groups of players and characters are still playing. We have moved on to new adventures and challenges.
If you want to know more about some of the adventures you'll need to play the game. Generally a game has an overarching story line that might or might not be clear to the characters and players immediately. The fun of the game is in the way someone runs the game. Good descriptions and interesting encounters need some artistic flair, and can't just be described to you. You'd need to play them.
"THOSE are the questions that should be answered."
This video is less than 3 minutes long. I think you really missed the point. There are other videos online of people actually playing, if you want insight into that. When people ask me about the game, I always tell them that they need to play it to get an idea.
If you were disappointed that you didn't get what you really wanted, then you had some pretty unreal expectations from a very short video. And to be honest, you came off sounding almost rude.
BTW, a lot of the 2nd edition D&D (the game he plays) can be found online for free as pdf's. You could read through an adventure like The Rod of 7 Parts if you want to know the story.
Peter Hardy
This video is for non players. If you are going to make a video about this guy, the most impressive thing you can show is all of his stuff. You can't replicate the spirit of the game in 3 minutes.

Bongwyre2112 who do you play with?
how do you keep the people together?
A few friends who I've known all my life. It went from about 10 people, but eventually a lot of them moved or went to school far away, so now I'm left with about 2 players who play regularly, but when any of the others come back we include them for a one shot. Same world, same campaign and most of them use their old characters that I have on file.
Keeping people together is hard, I mean people have lives and they tend to move get married or go to school far away. Basically as long as the Dungeon Master keeps things going and there are a few who still have interest in playing it isn't hard to keep it going. Fortunatly I had a lot of players come and go, and was able to hold onto about 2 players who play regularly, but like I said before when the others come back to town on vacation or visiting I include them and bring back their characters.
1997 is pretty long. Most of my players have a few characters that old. My only character I ever played regularly started out in 1981 and now she's an NPC that I use in the campaign. Hold onto that character! Old characters are rare these days. It seems like everyone wants to just make new characters all the time. I don't get it.

This man is brilliant. He has turned his favorite hobby into a social magnet that maintains contact with his friends... while making more friends. Plus... all the artwork! The painting, the sculpting, the incredibly imaginative landscapes - the sheer talent required to make all of that look so damn good. He must be an absolutely fantastic storyteller too - all the props in the world don't matter one bit if the DM is incompetent or boring. So that means acting, writing, lore, background - novels and screenplays worth of detail capable of enticing and enthralling his audience.

*YO, GOD! STOP INTERSECTING CAMPAIGNS! IT DOES NOT MAKE THE GAME INTERESTING, ONLY COMPLICATED AND WEIRD!*

Life goals right there.
That is honestly an impressive collection. I hope to have one of my own in that sort of likeness.
More like little tiny story! Give this man a full length documentary!!
Joe Williams
Give a TV series based on reenacting things in his game!
Hell give him a trilogy of movies.
Ikr. The videos are too short
The game has made me and my friends so much closer than we were. We’ve gone from a friendship to a brotherhood
This is the sweetest thing ive seen in a long time
was told to keep on, keeping on...(35years later)...still keeping on. Hell yeah.
Mr. Wardhaugh I salute you!!! Your intense passion for a game, D&D, which I hold dear is Amazing! Keep those dice rolling!
This man is the greatest nerd ever. I bow down to him.
This man has a constant, dynamic system, and it works!
This video was actually my first encounter with any tabletop ever. I'm happy that i saw it.
I spent a long time designing the perfect D&D campaign. It had no less than three custom languages that the players would learn over time, ancient artifacts, hidden rooms, completely custom characters, a map the took up several giant tables, and it took me around a year and a half of working on it four 4 hours a weekend. Some time during the mid-summer me and my friends finally got together to play through it, and it took us until December, averaging a single session a week.
I have one question for this dude.
How the hell does one make a quality D&D game so fast. I need to know this dude's secrets. Does anyone know a way to speed up the creation of a D&D world?
Thanks.
Edit: Never though I'd get this kind of response! I'm already excited to use some of your ideas in my future games. Thank you!
Practice for 35 years
Just practice and practice and practice and do that for 10-15 years and after you get pout of the asylum you can make a d&d world/week
Get an epic victory royale

Due to level caps, and simple story, I'm gonna have to assume its not directly the same campaign, but a bunch of campaigns all in the same world and are some how tied together.
That or they've passed into Epic levels
Maybe it's like the Elder Scrolls games.
God tier
Maybe they play at a certain level and never level up.
Homebrew rules?
What astonishes me the most is the fact the he plays ADD amongst all things. What an absolute madlad
This man created a game to keep his friends together.
That's beautiful.
Mike: You think we're going to sit in my basement and play games for the rest of our lives
Robert: well yes but no
took me 2 years to find this comment again lol
Me: i play dnd using a dry erease board and some LEGO minifigures
Robert Wardhaugh: hold my beer
I mean... If I am in the mood I craft little handouts and draw custom maps for fun. But.. that's not only another league - it's another game...
I draw my shit on napkins then blow my nose after I crit my players.

My weekly online D&D games kept me sane throughout lockdown. It's such a wonderful, creative and silly hobby.
I definitely know who the Dwarf Fighter of the group is.
It´s that dude with the jeans and the blue shirt right?
35 years? I can't seem to get players to sit still for 35 minutes!
Dungeon Master: okay everyone, here are your ropes
good for him! keeping friends together is very important and this is genius way to do it!
I’ve never played this before, but after watching this, I would LOVE to play!!
I hate it as a d&d player when someone sees this shit just as something from stranger things
Solitudal I don't play d&d but I knew this existed from other references, I honestly wished this was apart of my childhood but I played on my Nintendo, I wish I could've played this with my friends... Seems like fun
German Soldier whats stopping you? d&d is still a very popular game
