160,000 rpm Spindle with Air Bearings

Omega Dot designed and manufactured a bespoke test rig for spin testing ceramic discs to failure. This is the first of its kind in the world. The core of the spindle is a 4 kW permanent magnet motor supported by our proprietary air foil bearings technology. We commissioned the test rig to 160,000 rpm, where the disc reaches super sonic speed. Our tests shows the ceramic disc specimen fractures around 110,000 rpm and demonstrates the durability of our air bearings in supporting shock and impact loads.
