Dating to 1968, "Marijuana the Great Escape" was distributed by BFA and produced and directed by J. Gary Mitchell. This film tells the story of a young man who aspires to be a professional drag racer. But, he starts smoking marijuana, which impairs his ability to drive safely, and that leads to a terrible reckoning. The film was created in cooperation with the Inglewood Police Department (:26). The main character, George Willis and a young female friend work on his race car (:53). George details how he intends upon winning the race over flash forward footage (1:51). His mentor arrives to check on the boy’s and the car’s preparedness (1:59). His mentor is known as Tony Nancy, Captain of the US Drag Racing Team (2:25). George is to be driving a sponsored Double A drag racer which shows how large of a stake for George this race is. A 1978 VW Bus rolls into the scene (3:07). The stereotypical cluster of long haired 1970’s hippies steps from the van. The last man to exit; Max, is considerably older than his peers and is a known marijuana dealer (3:40). George seeks to purchase marijuana from Max (4:18). George and his female friend take the car to the race track for test runs (4:41). Tony steps out and re-attaches the safety parachute (5:08). Tony then accuses George of ‘blowing smoke’ (5:20) and warns him of the dangers of driving a vehicle such as this under the influence. Over the loudspeaker it is announced that George is the winner of the race (7:05) and that he is from Redondo Beach, California. Suddenly, his friend and pot dealer, Max calls him from the Englewood Police Department (7:47) as he and his friends had been arrested on possession charges. George offers to bail the group out with his 500-dollar prize money (8:28). The scene changes to evening and a gathering at one of the friend’s houses as a group passes a joint around the room (9:01). George then peer pressures his girlfriend; whom had been previously outspoken against marijuana, into trying the substance (9:54). As the substance begins to kick in the film shows dark and murky distortion scenes to exaggerate the effects (11:20). George wakes the girl up to get ‘munchies’ from a store meaning he and Max will have to operate vehicles under the influence (13:38). Pat realizes she has left her purse behind as George reverses and stops the vehicle for her to get it (14:17). The film details the affect marijuana has on the mind and body such as slowed reaction timing (14:46). A police car’s siren is heard as George has everyone within the car toss any marijuana. A moment later however the police car passes them without stopping (15:47). The gang drives on and hits a crime scene (16:14) as the police officers take statements (16:27), Max’s van is spotted. Max is pictured sitting on the curb with a blood spotted towel next to bystanders (16:34). A young girl is pulled into an ambulance while in a stretcher (16:41). George is seen on the race track smoking another joint (17:15). Appearing dejected, the rookie race car driver is seen at another race (17:36). Tests and tune ups are conducted as the cars are wheeled into position to begin the race (17:53). George jumps into the front seat of the dragster (18:46). Immediately as he takes off for the race, the car flips and bursts into flames (19:09). The film concludes and had been distributed by BFA (19:22).

That's the 60's for you, when racing top fuel dragsters was considered safer than pot.
Drag racers were definitely dangers aside from high grade fuel they hard to handle if didn't know how operate m .
They showed this to us in 6th grade. That was 1986. They were still showing this to kids in 86. It didn't have the intended effect on me.
analyzing the crash at the end , rear axle shaft failure, all the power goes to only the left side slick , throwing the dragster int a hard right turn and roll overs. Conclusion a pot smoking drag racer isn't aware that metal fatigue can result from second hand pot smoke contacting critical drive train components ! Imagine what it does to you !
lol lol lol
"Conclusion a pot smoking drag racer isn't aware that metal fatigue can result from second hand pot smoke..." lmao, groovy!
Guess my dirt bike was on dope when it hit that tree!
More like a _drug_ racer
He was not even 70 meters from the starting line and he flips??
In '68, if I had a bit of a stash, I don't recall ever having to "compel" my friends to smoke some with me!🤣
They used to talk about "drug pushers"...what a ridiculous concept...
This has only validated my 50 years as a regular pot smoker.
Ima smoke one for ya brother
@@lolshark99b49 on god
Are you a 70 something hippie who never did anything in his life and will very soon find himself completely alone in the hospital due to complications caused by said smoking? Oh that's right, you probably won't know that until it's too late and wake up realizing your whole life was a waste.
Used to believe that anti weed horse shit .but I knew close family and friends wasn't gunna give me anything to harm me so tryed it ..shit best times I've ever had I was baked .. also the best sleep aid and pain reliever ..iv taken Soo much over the counter anti inflammatory medications till now I have stomach bleeds and feel like crap all the time .. about to get a medical weed card already had a psychiatrist suggest it ...told me it's helped Soo many people
50 years wow shows that all this is bull shit
You're high right now watching this, aren't you?
Yes and im fine...cos i dont use powder
This is as funny as old dragnet episodes.
The 60s Dragnet episodes. Not the 50s episodes.
But George calls a ratchet a "handle" could be from that dope.
They got the fear porn, lies and propaganda covered.
No one ever had a bad acid trip from smoking weed.
eating it though....😀😵💫🥴
The great Tony Nancy makes a quick cameo. Love the 60s drag racing vibe to this attempt at keeping young people from smoking and driving.
These stupid movies were counter productive. When teenagers realized weed was not like depicted, it destroyed credibility for everything adults were trying to teach. Wait, what was I saying?
Something about how butterscotch was made to also discussing the fall of the Roman empire.
When I was 10 years old my uncle was kia in NAMS Central ahighlands SouthVietnam , mid 3/68 tail end of bloody TET , just over 10 days b-4 my 11 th b-day .
We had a 67 Ford, Mustang , 67 with a 289 cobra engine , and my neighbor had a 68 Pontiac Firebird , an my other neighbor had a 67 FordbFastback Mustang , and my friends brother had a 68 SS Chevelle .
11:00 best part. You got a love the totally ridiculous affects. They are showing the effects of taking a couple of hits of acid and calling it the effects of marijuana! Lol The thing is people used to buy this. If you are ignorant, somebody can lie to you, scare you, and be convincing. Nowadays everybody knows better, and knows this is a total out right lie.
I've been testing this, you are correct.
It's only a quarter mile to the cemetery, thanks to grass. Now, alcohol, that's something altogether different.
i'm both the person who's dedicated to my building skillset and crafts and the pothead who likes the "empty head, no thoughts" vibes. the difference between me on the clock at the shop and off the clock in the rec room.
both are possible. nice that we've learned a lot since this film was written.
I'm right there with you i smoke at work all the time but I know when not too
I built many motorcycles whilst stoned, no problems.
I'm smoking whilst watching this. Hilarious!
Same zeees
Same. totally cool vid to smoke to 👍
Man, I guess the pot was a lot stronger in the 60's. I've smoked pot for like 30yrs & I never got effects like that. It's almost like the makers of this film knew absolutely nothing about marijuana 🤣
It's actually the opposite. With todays custom strains, its much more powerful now
@@saltyassassin you’re L7 bro
@@saltyassassin those strains you smoke are decendant s of 60s Marijuana
Looking back, smoking 2 packs a day of normal cigarettes was MUCH worse than occasionally smoking Marijuana.
1968 , 69 ,:and 70 were radical times ; Ear in SouthVietnam was raging !
I remember being shown "Reefer Madness" in school 1980! I was so stoned & laughing my ass off!🤪🤣
Government says pot smoking is bad lol 😆
But they prefer you to smoke Tobacco because that’s taxable just smoke those nice safe cigarettes and stay away from those nasty untaxed grass 😁
My state legalized pot to increase tax revenues because so few people are smoking cigarettes now. Unfortunately the black market for marijuana exploded and now they're spending more money than ever to shut down illegal farms.
@scottlarson1548
That's because the weed in dispensaries is not good and/or too expensive
Watching while eating oreos with garlic dip.... man the light in my lamp changes hues, bright, dim, dim, bright....mm
A 69 Super Bee, your girl and a bag of weed. Beem me back Scotty...
Top fuel racing is safe. Weed will kill. Groovy man.
I'm soaking in it right now, lol.
@14:42 "The driver's awareness and perception are altered particularly as they relate to time and space." That must be why he's driving in the middle of the day with his headlights on as if he were in some day-for-night scene.
If it wasn't for the guy's that drank and toke pills and Marijuana, we wouldn't have any kind of racing in this country. Period
Or any good music
Where can I find acid like that weed ?
People back then had interesting vocabulary
I saw this in 6th grade in grade in 1974🤔
must have been some powerful stuff
to make you see colors and push your weed on everyone. never made a difference to me if someone smokes it or not I didn’t care to each his own
I saw this in 5th grade way back in 1970...
Song is so depressing
It sucks to
As a lifelong pot-head (born 1960), I both remember, and Approve Of, this film-strip.
I don't approve of any recreational drug but to those who use I ask them do do so in moderation. Yes, too much weed will rot your brain just like too much alcohol will pickle your liver and too much smoking will screw up your lungs. Please use moderation.
This is a very important piece of American history. I was under the impression that propaganda was illegal until Obama took office. This film says otherwise. Thank you for preserving and sharing it.
pal, propaganda is any media that promotes the views and positions of a state or government. not just the ones you don't like.
@@WSNO William Randolph Hearst and Harry Anslinger got the GOVT to ban cannabis for business reasons. That's not an opinion.
Haha Tell lie vision was invented for the purpose of mind control and the programming you recieve is a spell from Greek goddess of illusion.... Medea..... coincidene... nahh I think not
@@tracylynn1461 TV was created to earn more $$$ than radio. Now we have the internet to generate more $$$. VR augmented by drugs will be the next goal. We will all be in Matrix like pods as AI and machines take care of everything. Where my Soma?

Folks just say no to drugs

@@beau1112 I can get my kicks in other more wholesome ways
it wasn't pot
The ending obviously overly exaggerated
Man that’s what happens to those refer addicts !
Wow dude is pushy "DO IT. NOW. HIT IT. DAMNIT I SAID HIT IT" lol
TAKE YOUR DAMN CLOTHES OFF!!
Ahahaha 😂 prescription from a is the only thing that made me ever hallucinate ....weed doesn't do jack shit.
A little exaggerated , though the marijuana currently is alot more powerful .
14:18 - Ya know..that car has doors on both sides, don't you?
I drive like shit when I get severely depressed, not because I get stoned.
blast gas to this
Me like poke smot, me thinks gud...
Nahru jackets , tie die t- shirts , bell bottom pants , mini- skirts , buck skin jackets , and moccasins , love beads , midi- overcoats , in 69 maxi- overcoats ,vAnd skirts , with mini- skirts , long hair , afro - hair doos , black car coats , granny glasses , flower- power decals on VW Beatles cars ,vAnd vans , gogo boots , turtle neck sweaters , paisely shirts .
I literally developed no love for any of these characters so because they suck - the song at the beginning sucks to.
Not really....but it's better than nowadays
"...this is no time to crash! We're going to get some munchies!!" oooohhh, mary jane makes you want to sleep and eat chips? WHY, THAT'S SIMPLY UN-AMERICAN!
you really can get that stoned but you have to be an occasional user who dissolves an awful lot of really strong solid in cooking oil and then adds it to a small pot of choccy yoghurt and gulps the foul muck down as quick as he can. or at least you do if you're me!😜
30 years later, i can still make myself physically sick just by imagining the smell of a 'space yogurt' .🤢🤮
mind you, the special fx were *way* better than depicted in this film. 😀😃 🤤😵💫😵💫😵💫🤯🤯🤯
if anyone has ever been around racers they party after the event not while in the competition this was just fear propaganda ...... so stupid even back then they laughed at this propaganda
🤣🤣🤣
XD Gotta love Propaganda. The trick is Recognizing it when it is Aimed at You.
after seeing this video ill never drag race ever
Marijuana is not a drug
