It’ll never happen. I’ll never understand why in the sense that it’s just some old songs, but it’s true to his form. He’s never been inconsistent about that.
As I understand it, there are two factors behind his "Not Gonna Sing Genesis No More" stance. First, he wanted to make a break from Genesis, and didn't want to be "stuck" rehashing the same old hash. Second, there are (I expect) rights and licensing issues at play - it's not "his" music, it's "their" music, and so on, and so forth - so, simpler on the whole not to sing "the old stuff". Of course, as a fan of Genesis in its Gabriel years I think this is all a bunch of crap, but then I'm not Peter Gabriel and he is.
@@jarvisfamily3837 i don't think you have pay licensing to perform. Plus he sang Genesis in his early solo years -- Back in NYC, The Lamb Lies Down. I think it's mostly attributable to pride and "that was then, this is now" mindset -- it's nice to seem him a little nostalgic at last.
I have to believe this was not an easy thing for PG to do after 34 years. That being said, he did it slowly, and with incredible emotion in each word. He feels his music much more than many others do, and it showed. Breathtaking for those that know what they witnessed and heard.
I'm afraid this will always be a dream (a long-lasting one that has went on for years) that will never come to fruition. They've reached an age and physical state (at least with Phil Collins) in which it's really not possible.
The only way I can see it working is if they do a 1 hour set with Phil fronting the band, and then 1 hour with Peter fronting the band. And then, for an encore, both singers fronting the band together for I Know What I Like, or maybe even Carpet Crawlers. This way, fans of both eras of the band can be satisfied simultaneously. I'd love to see this, and would pay any sum of money to see Genesis in 2018.
This is one of those serious goose bump moments, really wish they'd done the whole track. Really is an emotional version with the irish style fiddle playing. Just makes me think of the relentless passing of time...
I could only imagine the anticipation if Gabriel got back with his fellow band mates for a one-off concert. Everyone thinks U2 rules the stage. Genesis with Gabriel/Hackett would blow them out of the water.
When I saw this tour, it was Sting singing this song. A handful of people in the crowd went nuts when they realized. I was stunned to hear it, and a little saddened that it wasn't Peter singing, but I still thought it was amazing to hear it at all. I was also a little saddened that Peter didn't do more of Sting's songs, though it was great how many of Peter's songs wound up performed by Sting's band. One of my favorite memories of the show, though, was a point when Sting's band was performing, and Tony Levin came out on stage and just sat on one of the amps to listen, clearly enjoying getting to hang out on the best seat in the house. Further evidence of how much Uncle Tony just loves MUSIC more than anything. No competition, just camaraderie and appreciation for the art. One of my all time favorite live shows.
Just found this clip.I feel like crying.I miss him so much.I was shocked that the video was so short. No one in any tribute band holds a candle to PG. I still listen to Genesis almost daily but only from the PG era
I was at Milton Keynes in 1982. I never thought he would perform another Genesis track. We have got to have a full reunion before it is too late. Please.
Yup, me too! It pissed down that day, and we drove overnight from Glasgow to watch it. Wish they had done a video of it. They said they didn't want to coz the were worried they wouldn't remember some of the words. It didn't matter coz 60,000 Genesis fans did!! ☺️☺️☺️
I have watched this video more than than ten times. I have dreamed all my life after his departure from Genesis, to hear his more educated voice singing one of the Genesis classics. I wish he would be invited by Hacket to one of his Genesis revisited concerts to perform at least a couple of songs.
I think Steve would love to reunite with Peter, I believe Peter is the one who is still reluctant to reembrace his past with Genesis (his best work in my view), also because he is rightfully proud of his solo work. I wish it happens one day...
It’s my dream to see Peter to perform some songs from Genesis again❤, considering that maybe this year’s tour maybe his last tour and I think I will cry during the concert.

Short yes! But what a joy to hear pg singing this again.. his voice now serves it well and I would love to hear the whole thing. Sorry but I just can’t warm to sting
I think Canada has actually been quite Genesis-friendly since the beginning. But I think the problem is that half (or more than half at the concert I went to) of the audience are Sting fans who don't know the difference between Gabriel singing this and, say Rhythm Of The Heat. It's just another Gabriel tune they aren't familiar with. And even a good portion of the Gabriel fans only became fans after So was released and don't have a clue about his work with Genesis...so the significance is lost on them. And the ones who do know were the few cheering or maybe sitting back and listening and soaking it all in.
I'm glad they didn't so I could hear Gabriel's magnificent voice performing for the first time in 34 years one of the most iconic lead vocals in history.
For some reason, the genesis era with Phil Collins was more popular. I had no doubt that Peter would come back with Genesis, since they did announce that they’re splitting up permanently.
Although Phil Collins did a sterling job in carrying on in Gabriel's shoes, Genesis were never really quite the same after PG left. . One could argue the same with the split of Pink Floyd. Or Yes... Or Supertramp. . Gabriel's voice was quintessentially English - Garden of England in fact. No one has come as close, not even FIsh.... And this very brief expose was chilling, yet lovely to behold. . Such a dear, dear man - Peter Gabriel.
I agree nothing touches PG w Genesis ….and I loved Trick of the Tail album…but see if u can find PG singing ‘Washing of the Waters” love…. At a big festival by himself on piano…he s bald ,old, w his grey goatee… And his singing is beyond grasp…it’s a very hard song to sing…and he absolutely kills it…what a vocalist…the emotions and tone are uniquely his…spiritual
Good God that sounds so gorgeous. Imagine all of the places he could take his beautiful, epic vocal melodies from Genesis days. Anyone familiar with their first album Trespass? A song like Dusk, or Stagnation... even all the way up to "The Lamb..." with songs like Cuckoo Cocoon, Fly On A Windshield, The Lamia (maybe have to down tune that one a step but damn its well suited for his raspy older voice). I hope he considers revisiting something like that at least once, but what I'd really like is a tour with new stuff, 1 from each album, and a few Genesis selections. Most of the members have never said "No" outright to a reunion with Peter, including Peter. In interviews, it's usually left at "maybe/probably not but who knows", so it kind of feels like 2 or 3 songs on one of his last tours isn't a big ask as a fan. He doesn't have to hit the high notes. I mean listen to this. Just such a textural, unique sound. fuck sake
Imagine if he did the Lamb reunion tour with Genesis in 2007. After finishing the whole Lamb setlist, they bow to crowd and go backstage, crowd goes bonkers doing the "We want more" thing, they go back on stage. Encore 1: Watcher Of The Skies, The Musical Box, The Knife. All in its entirety. They bow again, go backstage, crowd going even more insane, they go back out. Encore 2: Dancing With The Moonlit Knight, I Know What I Like. All in its entirety. Everybody can die in peace. Imagine.
Well, this is the dream😊. Peter now goes on tour again this year and probably is his last tour. If he can add some genesis songs into setlist, I am sure I can die peacefully ❤.
In 78 at Madison Square Garden@ Genesis show w Phil as the front man…Gabriel came out and sang the encore…’I Know What I Like” people didn’t know what was going on unless u were sitting close. Last Gabriel performance w Genesis…I was there in disbelief
Why not continue? I believe it's important not to hang on to the past but there's nothing wrong with a little time travel once in a while. Anyways it's nice to see P.G. still has a little Genesis left in him..

SHHHH STING, PETER IS SINGING
I want Peter to cover old Genesis songs with an orchestra.
He considered Suppers Ready for the orchestral tour back 10, 11 years ago but opted against it.
It’ll never happen. I’ll never understand why in the sense that it’s just some old songs, but it’s true to his form. He’s never been inconsistent about that.
Damn shame that 99% of the audience had NO idea what they were witnessing.
I was thinkin the same thing ...
I would have lost my shit if i was there.
Steve Hackett still doing this live. And his Band is unreal.
As many others may feel, this is bittersweet, as it appears he’s putting his Genesis work to bed for himself, creating a sense of closure.
I've never so much not wanted to hear Message in a bottle in my life
Was that so hard, Mr Gabriel?!
I think it was indeed
Better than he sang it live in the original days. He's been practicing on his vocals in the last 40+ years. ;-)
Gabriel is obviously hiding from the others.

well said!
Phil did it justice during the Last Domino tour
Legendary moment. Peter Gabriel's final farewell to that wonderful era of music.
I prefer to think of it as his re-embracing of this music. For many decades he has more or less shunned it (dismissed it as youthful folly).
Hey, he's going on tour again this year. Let's keep our fingers crossed...
nah, more like he and Stingo didn't approve of ordinary folk voting for brexit
Thank you Steve Hackett for your Genesis revisited!!!!!

I cried like a baby
Who cares if no one cheers, that way you can hear the song! This is only twice in a lifetime!
mindblowing then Sting started singing......
