Something that distinguishes both Winters and Carson from the guys today... They were from rural America and they exhibited rural American hospitality and mores. They always remembered where they came from. I'm not indicting the urban folks or the guys that are hosting today, but you can tell times have changed with that regard. RIP Winters.
I got to see Jonathan do an hour of standup in 1979 at the opening of an art gallery in OKC. I stood about twenty feet away from him. He told about a typical day when he was in grade school, "My dad was asleep in the snow behind the VFW building." I laughed so hard my ribs hurt the next day. I laughed without stop for AN HOUR. priceless.
More than 50 years ago I hear Johnathan winters on an album and it was my first time hearing him and I was a kid. To this day whenever i think of him and sometimes he pops into my head and I remember those sketches and sound effects and pure craziness and I laugh out loud. I am laughing right now. Good journey Mr. Winters...
Overnights are the fast unadjusted Nielsen ratings they get first thing the next morning. Ratings are obviously very important because it effects the amount of money you can charge per 30 second ad spot. So Jonathan Winters was saying the producers and network didn't care about what you talked about, as long as your appearance on the show brought viewers in.
Mr. Winters with memories like that no surprise he became in my opinion the greatest comedian that every lived. Like so many things in live when dealt one extreme in life you balance it with the opposite extreme (i.e. ugly reality vs. mocking the ridiculousness of it all). If I wished for anybody to my Grandfather I would wish it to be Mr. Winters. Wow what a gift that would do. Truly all the respect I have in me to this man.
I literally grew-up watching Jonathan on Carson and trying my best to imitate his characters like Maudie Frickert. No one even comes near to his talent (Robin is close), and in one more generation all will be gone except for memories....clean and classy. Carson was a class act with no one else is in his league!
I don't really buy that they were better because they came from rural backgrounds; the ethics and morality of both the Republican party and fundamentlist Christianity--both which hold sway in the country--are dreadful. Carson just had the right personality for the job.
RIP Jonathan..your were one in a million and you still make me just bust a gut

Jonathon Winters and Red Skelton were and still are my all time favorite comedians. Both very classy men, very funny, and very clean.

winters...another one of my heroes.
Jonathan Winters invented improv. Carson invented the tonight show and his unique brand of humor. We wont see their likes again. Goodnight my friends.
Jonathan Winters, always a joy to watch and very funny. I think he should play Babe Ruth next, looks like the Great Bambino here.
thank you that word shot by so fast. I had no idea what he was referring to.
BRILLIANT!
I'm splitting my gut!

Yup, fundamental Christian ideals are dreadful. By the way, were you at the finish line at the Boston Marathon?
