THANKS TO TOM SUMMERS:
This video is about putting a remote starter button permanently mounted in your engine compartment. Best for tuning your engine and checking spark. warm ups. Great Idea
I also was having a problem with intermittent starting. the some of the wiring was not so great to the starter so it would not start more than 1 or 2 times then I would need to wait like 1/2 hour then it would start. Checked switch and starter both were fine. Resistance in the wires or circuit somewhere. Relay solved problem.

yea for some reason ha ha my mind was blank. had a brain fart all day. I will pin your comment. thanks for the idea. everyone likes it.
I’ve been doing this on my bug for years, did a reddit post about it a while back, I implemented a start and a cut switch so when ignition was on I could start the vehicle from the back for tuning and general showing off, the cut switch would also allow me to kill the engine from the back, made tuning a breeze, was also a extra hidden security method to prevent theft.
🎯
Did this over 40 years ago when the Company J.C. Whitney was still in business. Nice diy demo! ❤
the number of times i have walked to my ignition key on my karmann this good plan keep passing the great info to us guys helps so much thank you Mike
This is a must have for any VW owner! Great info for others!
Absolutely!
That is a good addition, I’ve added engine bay lamps to mine, really helps out when along side the road at night.
Also if you put a 3 position switch on it and run the other function off the points side of the coil, you can use the light to static time the distributor, just make sure you switch it to the off position as it will strobe with the motor running.
Is this something you call illustrate or gave a video of?
That's a really good idea
Mike keep passing the great info 🤝
Awesome idea! Add this to the never ending list of mods to do on my bus. Great work!
Really great idea and appears to be a relatively simple installation. Your channel is very educational. Keep them coming.
That idea is so good I'm fitting one tomorrow!
Yea I am going to put one in the single cab too to roll the belt on and off with.
Did same now thinking I want a battery junction in compartment for tune up, tired of jumper cables to battery for timing light,,,you should do a video I’m sure other people could benefit from it to
Very nice. Hey, Check your dizzy. It doesn't look all the way seated. Prolly nothing. Really enjoy your videos.
yep there a good idea i did it on my early holden
makes life easier when your trying to do repair or adjustments on your own
great for when your doing compression tests too
i like the relay wish i'd known about that 40 years ago when i had a 63 beetle it wouldn't start in winter had to use a 12 volt battery as a booster to get it going
Good idea! Makes it a lot easier if you were by yourself trying to start it instead of running back and forth to the key to start it! Great video and thanks for the tip! 👍
The starter relay only masks the voltage drops in the wiring connections and grounds. Problem is that relay does not solve all the other electrical items from voltage drops. Personally have several early 1960 type 2s with original wiring, with bright headlights, running lights, brake lights, and turn signals. Plus faster wipers and loud reliable horns. This only after having the afore mentioned connector and soldered up the interior connections in the fuse box and headlight switch. Used to see as much as 2 volts drop to the taillights, now less than 1/10 of a volt drop. The only original wiring that normally needs to be replaced in the ACVWS is the lengths in the engine compartment. Whether this is due to engine oil, gas, or ozone fumes, the wiring insulation turns brittle and cracks apart. Otherwise the original wiring does not degrade. Have taken quite a few harness that have been tossed out, only to find new looking wires inside the outer harness covering. Using those same wires for repairs that match the original wiring colors and size. Do use solder and heat shrink to mend wiring repairs together and use the factory style ratchet crimper and brass terminals for connections that oxygen and corrosion can not get into those connections. For all the other connections that are not crimped or soldered after cleaning use a little dielectric grease to keep the corrosion away for as long as possible into the future. www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=483901&highlight=fuse+box+soldering and

solder and shrink tube is always the best way to repair wiring. I do that a lot. Yea if you solder all the connections it will make everything work better. That is why on the early cars there were less issues with the screw connectors. Late models with the slip connectors that were 6 volt had many more issues. The new wiring does finally get older and start to have issues. I remember doing this repair to cars when they were only 15 to 20 years old (with the GIANT ford relays...OMG). Relays are much more reliable and available today so never a bad idea to ad them to the start system on a 6 volt car.
Dielectric grease or spray electric lubricant (like thin grease) keeps the corrosion away. Also I dip them in Tarnaid then thoroughly rinse. or soak them after.
Really enjoy your videos, plain and simple information. Like it or not is your attitude.
Hey Mike. This morning Rambus no go !! This cold front gots the 20-50 Z Val . to thick .. In Waco I took the oil out of my bug and heated it on the stove then it cranked right up . Thats a nice mod. I like the Egas.
yea that egas is cool. Put a small hot plate under the engine....
there is a place in AZ somewhere that sell the egas for like less than 150 no manifold. They dont call it egas Like weber copy.
Great tips Mike ! Thanks for sharing it.👍👍 You really come up with great tips for the note book.
Thank you for the Tip, I think it should be better to install it outside the engine compartment to prevent any risk of fire
Definitely adding that to my bus. Great ideas!
yea when Tom showed me and I was having a start issue too (that is why I put the relay in) I thought man this would be cool to have. On the side of the road when something goes wrong for testing and stuff.
Hey Mike, I had a question. I am adding a push button start to the front of my bus under the dash board. The reason is because the inside of my ignition broke so the ignition only turns on it doesn't start the bus.
Where do I connect my two wires from that switch? Do I have to take them all the way back to the engine compartment?
Great idea Mike!
you would like having that on the turbo car. so you can tune it and stuff from the back of the car. easy clean fix.
I pinned your comment might help people find your channel and the turbo build.
@@Mikefngarage Nice thought Mike. That;\'s what I love about the YT VW community.
Great videos Mike, but question. if you're running electronic ignition keeping the key on while going to the back and working on the car could potentially fry your electronic ignition points correct???
Viewer Tip: If the VW is 1971 or newer, one could pick up the starter wire from the diagnostic socket in the engine compartment.
OH yea are you sure that is not 72 and up. The 71 had the bug engine.
@@Mikefngarage LoL maybe... Its been a while
real good info, enjoy the show.
Yeah good idea that...I’ll put that on the list...👍🏴
Hi Mike great video , quick question what carb have you got on your bus thanks mike
HI, I installed a hard start relay yesterday and all works well finally. I ALSO want to install one of these button start things in the back as you are. This is a type 4 motor 76 Bus. Can you just clarify again where to hook up the 2 wires?. The battery side of the starter- thick cable, to exactly where on the cylinoid?. Thanks. PS> it's a 76 automatic fuel injection. Not sure that would make any difference.
Nice video.. question.. What kind of carb is that on your van? Reminds me of my Weber progressive...
most heavy duty vehicules as buses, fire trucks, ambulances uses relays to switch the power to the circuits instead of passing the power thru the switches, it is not much used on cars because of the cost of such a solution.
when I have to redo the circuitery on british cars, I systematically install relays to relieve the weak switches and gain reliability over the original arrengement.
yea mine was intermittent so I put that on now it works fine.
Awesome video thanks for this really good topic
I like the idea of a permanent remote starter switch. I understand the function of the hard start relay but is it necessary for this switch if you don’t have a voltage drop issue?
I was having an issue with that too. thought it was my ignition switch but it wasnt so I put the relay in there to make it work. IDK why it would not start sometimes. Checked it at the starter and it started every time.
Pretty easy to do and as much as folks work on these motors it's a good idea. Greyhound buses on the Grease Monkey channel have them
Good stuff Mike!
Awesome idea 👍😁
You could also use another ignition switch with a key if needed. A cheap generic one , I think they run at about 20 to 30 bucks.
yea that is good too.
Great idea!
Where can I get 6v starter relay? Thanks
Where did you buy the wire connector? You did not list where you bought it.
just 2 wires made it myself
awesome idea, doing this!
I'm thinking of putting a key ignition in my engine bay
Real nice
Yo Mike!
👍
good Idea I did this too my Beetle as I work on it when no one is around
Mike love ya Bro but your got too put more time in if you're making a vid too educate people um and uh and maradeing Thought process helps no one
But this one back there actually _isn't_ remote. The _regular_ one is the remote one. This one is the _immediate_ one.
❤
That's just cheating!🤣
Good idea though.
🤪🪓
Very dusty
Way cool !
