- There's been a lot of concern about the future of Little Jamaica in Toronto. The iconic neighbourhood located on Eglinton Ave is at risk according to advocates due to gentrification & transit construction. Recently, Toronto city council had the option to designate Little Jamaica as a heritage conservation district, but council voted 'no'. Brandon explains why.

I think they should keep re-activating this vote over and over again until it’s approved. First you don’t succeed, try try again. It will take a number of years BUT it should be approved....also,when folks run for local office over and over again-the vote will change!
Well they need to define "Cultural District" and invest into making it into just that; Cultural District of Little Jamaica" I used to enjoy visiting "Little Italy" in the summer time...love to do that with "Little Jamaica" Jerk chicken, coconut water, red stripe beer, grapenut icecream...the barber shops, Randy's patty, hardo bread, and fry fish....need I say more
I hope they come up with a definition soon. This area will be changing a lot in the near future otherwise...
Thats some foolishness wayyy....! Cultureal really ...
Of course they would make a new definition to keep things the same way!!! But Little Portugal, Greektown, Little Italy, China Town, Little India, Korea Town etc. can all be heritage sites. Not looking for anything from these people. I could care less how 'they' want to see. We are done with depending on 'them' for any definition of self. We must always make our own and declare our own. Bless Beautiful and Mighty People!!!
We are not going to give up on this so we will keep voting.
My parents came to Canada in the 70’s and when they got here they said they grew up coming the Little Jamaica. So my question is from time why didn’t the community set things in order from back then? Now when things gone bad and they already started to change things you want to fuss. That is the problem with our ppl, we are too laid back. Stay woke, black ppl. This is what the city is trying to do at Jane and Finch. Kick all the minorities out and then make it expensive so you can’t come back. Look at all the construction they are doing and changes. It is not for us, it is to attract the rich. These communities are close to everything, 401, the Allen, 400, universities etc. We have to be like the Black Americans and take back our communities. Where are all the wealthy black ppl in Canada to step in and help? No where, sitting back on the sidelines looking in. SMH
My question is, Did anyone from the (Little Jamaica) community attended the initial consultation meetings (Open House) for the Eglington Connect Project?
Yes
Carribbean people are resilient and a persistent people. We shouldn’t give up just because we didn’t get the answer we were looking for this time.
What kind of foolishness is this?? Seriously..no definition?? Just wow!!
Different Jamaican organizations need to come together and raise big money to build say a community centre or museum in the area that will celebrate the culture. At the end of the day, money talks! If the government saw that the people have sufficient resources, they would give the appropriate designation.
Little Jamaica wul not be the first cultural district but it will have some cultural elements that are first.
Jamaica 🇯🇲 Jamaica 🇯🇲
Unfortunately, not surprised
What a surprise!!! "It is easier to fool someone, than to convince someone that they have been fooled". Stay woke people.
They'll say they'll support but when shit this the fan they'll walk away. Reapply and don't vote for the people who said no
Foolishness at its finest. How about we get a petition in place or reach out to the city directly to ensure our voices are heard and real change takes place.
There needs to be a town hall meeting in the community and brandon is right. It's up to everyone to speak up.if you dont speak up you lose out. It's that simple
Is there a link to who voted in favour/against the heritage proposal?
How do they not have a definition for the thing you are pronouncing onto a community. Smh
Developing a definition - that will soon after fade because of what they already planned to do.
Am I surprised? No
This is sooo wrong
This rass city gets on my nerves. The anti-Blackness is so prevalent here. I’m disgusted.
