I've been watching a lot of your videos, to learn how to do things on my own. I have 5 kiddos I'm raising without my husband who passed last year. I didn't realize how reliant I had become on him. I've let it hold me back this year. On what would have been our 13tg anniversary, I made the decision to move out of my dad's and start a homestead of my own on the property I will inherit. I grew up on this property and my parents had it homesteaded back then. We raised hogs and processed them, had gardens and many others things I'm trying to bring back. Our shell home will be delivered in October. So I'm full swing prep mode. Y'all's videos are a godsend full of tips and advice and inspiration for me! Thank you so much!!!

WOW!! My Momma raised the 5 of us on her own. She worked 2 and 3 jobs at a time and put herself thru school. She graduated with Honors. Her major was in agriculture. She is an amazing Mom and I am so thankful to have her with me. My heart really goes out to you. If ever I can help with anything please reach out to me. 5 kiddos is not an easy task. Thank you for showing us your shelves. I would have liked to know how these were anchored to the wall and what the bottom of them looked like.
He said these are portable shelves he made at a previous home.
Just a comment about vertical spacing of the shelves. Shallow shelves should be at eye level. It's hard to see a 4 inch jar on a top shelf! The upper shelves should be for taller, preferably lighter objects which will remain visible.
You aren't wrong, honestly. In practicality it is wiser to keep the heavier breakable containers at the heights this family does. We can 5,000 quarts of food minimum per year. Small up top. It is also used less for our family whereas the quarts fly off the shelves. Also more difficult for 4 footers (7 to 12 year old helpers etc) to reach and safely carry when the more needed jars are heavier and out of reach.
As someone who has struggled with being vertically challenged her whole life I totally agree.

Working on plans to redo a U-shaped pantry myself and I'm loving the look of these shelves. Now if I can figure out how to do a corner section I'll have it made.

Literally just saw a different video of yours and I thought "oh wow I wanna build ahevles like that" so I searched for it on UA-cam and your channel pops up again 😂😂
Thank-you for teaching me how, my late Dad built our canning shelves. Not only were the shelves similar to what you have, but Dad also put made doors to cover up the jars. the doors looked like regular cabinet doors. If I remember right, we had four rows in the top cabinet; and then the bottom was just two rows with doors, for other stuff. The other stuff would have been bulk or other items that we didn't use a lot.
This was a lot of info and will help me on designing my pantry in my new home thank you

Great video, I like the front vertical supports instead of putting a division in to support the horizontals
Great looking.....suggestion....a wood slat across the front that will protect your supply during an earthquake. Or something might shake your shelves.

My husband and I just watched this! I liked the tip at the end of how a spouse could build it for another! It made us laugh, I just looked over and smiled at him with a big smile! 😂😂😂
Thanks for another great video. I am doing the research atm, so my family are ready'er when we have saved up for our little homestead in Denmark. We are living in a rented house atm, and the landlord dont allow us to do much to the house, but it is cheap and every penny saved goes to our downpayment for our forever-home!

Back in the UK older homes always had a North facing pantry off the kitchen. When it came to modernisation post WW2, they were all ripped out. Now it's back to having them....

When I designed shelves for wide mouth and then got some narrows… keep that in mine folks!

We built very similar shelves, some wide, some narrower to fit into otherwise useless spaces, but all were sized for various sized mason jars. I was amazed how many shelves we built yet filled them all and wish I had still more LOL
Those are some great looking shelves with great looking food on them! Question 1: How did you anchor the shelves to the wall? Question 2: How much weight do your shelves hold?

Screw the shelves into wall studs (or secure them with brackets to the floor joists if walls are concrete). 1x1 strips attached to the front prevents jars from falling during earth quake or sudden ground shifts (I had a propane tank blow next to by basement wall that did that. Jars moved, but survived).

The classic totally adjustable (and super cheap) shelving is IKEA's IVAR system - you can choose the height of every shelf. If you are not handy enough to build your own, those are the next best thing.
Over engineered is a lesson well learned form the Victorian age, wish more things were designed that way these days. Good job. Built to last.

Excellent presentation! Very thorough. A suggestion to potential shelf builders, it was mentioned in a way to have a mind set of best utilization of materials. Because plywood comes in sheets of 4' x 8' using a denominator that will divide equally into 4 and 8 is the best use. For example one sheet of plywood will make 32 lineal feet of 1' wide shelving or 16 lineal feet if 2' wide etc.
and 24 ft of 16" shelves which is a nice depth too!
Don't forget that the blade you cut that plywood with will take 1/8"
It does not apply to metric, but we tend to all ready to use conveniently convert able units/measurements.

Fortunate enough to have a large basement that allowed me to build my own shelves and arrange them similar to a library so I can access them from both sides.
I may need smaller sections so I can adjust the shelves for different parts like one section for cereal boxes the rest for canned jars etc. my pantry built ins are only 12 inches deep and there’s room for 24 inches on each side uhg it’s wire too so that’s tricky with smaller items
Did you dado the back and sides for the actual shelves to have additional support?
This was my question also, Is it just glued and screwed or did you cut a dado?
Humidity that's another big factor that you forgot mention, the less humid the better , not humidity if possible, under AC would be the best room for storage

Where do buy in bulk
We made the mistake of going too deep. Recycled strawberry boxes helped. Struggle with temp. I cannot access the basement.
A friend, while she was on vacation had a squirrel come in through the roof vent and invade her basement, and it knocked every one of her canned preserves onto the floor and broke them, so I would consider at least adding a raised edge (or doors?) just in case.
80% of the time my shelves would stay at a set space. There is however 20% of the time I'd like to change things up. For that reason I think i would go with some kind of adjustable system above the 5 gallon buckets.
Where have you been able to find gallon jars? I have looked for them and can never find any. Thank you. God's blessing to you and yours.
We use them for dry goods. Old pickle jars 😉 usually you can find them at yard sales or older home basement
yep, pickle jars!! i use mine for making large batches of pickled eggs. i also put dry ingredients in them. no canning items tho. if you look at amazon they are ridiculously priced. sometimes you can find them on clearance at rual king, if you have one in your area.

Yes, he said that. We moved from a location where that was an option to a place with no basements. So it isn't an option for everyone. Recommendations vs reality do not always align, unfortunately.
Maybe since my husband can't build things... perhaps can you ask your wife if I can borrow you to come build them for me? You can tell her I said thank you in advance. Lol
Excellent information, especially with the 'science' behind your tips. Know what? Looking at the compliment of filled jars with all their treasures...makes me think of the Queen of England who doesn't, I would bet, own a larder of home-canned goods like 'you' have in your home! 'Tinned' provisions, sure, but not the fresh, quality, products that loving hands produced for your family and friends! BRAVO! : )

Should finish the shelf, what if you have a canning fail? A lot of mess and stains to clean up
I had asked you in the last video about storing the food in darkness in which someone else tried to answer which is one of my pet peeves because when I ask a person a question that is specific to them I don't like someone else answering for them. Thank you this was very informative.
