One way I explained it to a couple people is the difference between seeing someone get sick and thinking "ew" and seeing it and feeling an overwhelming urge to run as far as you can from that person with your heart pounding and your body jittering

Don't want to worry anyone but below is my most recent experience
I was walking to my college through the parking garage and someone mustve been drunk or something and left a present in one of the stairs and i didnt realize until i was already stepping past it.
Didnt stop shaking for a while after that

I have misophonia (the extreme hatred of specific sounds) and that's not the same as a phobia but it's a similar experience. Hearing trigger sounds can cause a fight or flight response or if I'm in a situation where I can't escape, even a panic attack. My trigger noises are practically any mouth noises (those are the most common triggers) so I can barely eat dinner with my family anymore. They don't take it seriously, and my siblings will even trigger me intentionally if I tell them it's bothering me. I can't even comprehend why you would do that to anyone, it's so messed up!

i have really bad emetaphobia and the 2 WORST things are when someone in you class feels like throwing up and you are just waiting and waiting for the bell to ring and one minute feels like 5 minutes and it is just AWFUL..... and the second thing is when one of your siblings or your parents are throwing up it is AWFUL

I used to suffer from emetophobia very badly as a child triggered by anxiety. I had my first anxiety attack when I was 8 and I ended up being sick all over my mom.(Sorry mom lol.) Ever since that day I was afraid to be sick or see others be sick. When I started to feel nervous due to my anxiety, I knew what would happen. I was put on many medications for my anxiety which also helped stop the feeling of being nauseated. I also sucked on a lot of mints which calmed me down so I wouldn't spill my guts. But as an adult now with an infant it has gone mostly away. As I grew up, I realized it's not so bad and it's over quickly. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I was sick so badly, I was put on medication. I'm glad I'm not pregnant now, it was horrible. My daughter is 4 weeks old now and I'm happy as can be. I hope anyone reading this who has emetophobia can overcome it someday. I believe you can. 😊😊

I have a friend who would intentionally trigger my trypophobia (I was told by another friend that she said it was "fun" to "annoy" me). She would show me triggering drawings or point things out to me in the art room that would make me feel really uncomfortable, and just a couple of weeks ago, she tagged me in a REALLY triggering post on Facebook (I started crying and I felt like I couldn't breathe for a moment because it was so unexpected). I got mad at her the next day and told her to stop, and since she hasn't done anything to trigger it, but it just sucks that people with phobias have to deal with people ridiculing them simply because they don't take the time to understand the phobia and how it can affect people.

Great video ahh!! I fear other people being sick and feeling sick more than myself being sick. I don’t know what it is, I think my senses just get overwhelmed involving the sounds and smells etc (I don’t want to get into the details bc ew). I HATE having emetophobia so damn much. Even people mentioning that they feel like that makes me panic. I always have a constant fear while sitting in class in case someone does it, due to past experiences in lessons. I hope I’ll get better at dealing with it one day, luckily my friends understand.

Dana Gibbs I relate ENTIRELY with your comment. And I can’t go on rides at theme parks because of my emetophobia and until recently (when I told my mom about it) my family always said I was just a chicken and I used to cover it up using “it makes me not feel well” but it did because my fear makes me have stomach pains and it makes it worse which traps me in a loop of fear.

I've had Emetophobia for as long as I can remember and it seems to have gotten worse over the years. I was at the cinema with my mum, brother and sister today and just as the movie ended my sister (who was sitting next to me) got sick and I had to literally run from the theatre and sit outside because I was having a panic attack. Afterwards my mum yelled at me for not staying and helping her and said I was a bad sister. She tells me to grow up and stop being ridiculous and that if I want to be a nurse I need to overcome it. I just can't help it and she doesn't seem to understand that. Thank you for sharing your story xx

    MILD TRIGGER WARNING:
Just to add to your website idea- the movie ‘Knives Out’ is 100% NOT SAFE. I had to leave the theater because of a panic attack, which was disappointing because I was looking forward to the movie since I like murder mysteries. One of the main characters gets sick every time she tells or hears a lie- which is very often. So I had to cover my eyes and ears and hide my face until I couldn’t handle it and ran out 20 minutes into the movie.
I always check Common Sense Media or Rotten Tomatoes to see the ratings of movies and a general review to see if someone gets in the movie, which kind of sucks because it means I have to spoil the entire thing for myself.
It’s hard with panic disorder, anxiety and emetophobia. It just creates an endless cycle. I’m currently thirteen, and I’ve had emetophobia since I was seven. It started with something that happened to me when i was three. I hit my head on my dresser and started getting sick, so my parents thought I had a concussion. They took me to the emergency room, and I got sick there and in the car. It was a very stressful experience, and it was the first time I went into a hospital or emergency room, as well as the first time my parents ever fought. Since I was eight, I’ve been getting therapy and medication for my anxiety. I used to starve myself and eventually developed anorexia, which I managed to push past when I was eleven. I was afraid to go to restaurants for so long, and I got over that when I was ten. But now, I can go to restaurants whenever I want, and I try new food and such. I’m currently visiting New York City, which is a place with lots of potential illnesses, and I’ve managed to not have any major panic attacks, even when I saw a homeless man get sick on the sidewalk.
It’s still very hard for me to deal with. I never go into a public space without knowing that there’s a bathroom nearby so I can run to it if I need to get sick or hide so no one can see me. Crowds and tight spaces overwhelm me because feel like there’s nowhere to go when I get anxious or nauseous. I usually feel my chest tightening, I start feeling extremely hot, I feel nauseous, my heart starts pounding, and my flight, fight or freeze response speeds up. I lash out at my parents during panic attacks because I feel so overwhelmed, and I hate myself for doing this. I have the overwhelming urge to run and hide, but I can’t because I freeze up like a deer in headlights.
I do have some advice for anyone who needs it. Mint gum always helps me because it distracts me from bad tastes and smells that trigger me. I look at memes or watch UA-cam to distract myself. I get to a place where I feel safe, like a bathroom or somewhere where I’m alone but not eerily so. I like to listen to music that makes me feel strong and badass, because it’s hard for me to feel scared when I’m getting pumped up by music and feel like a super hero or a celebrity. If I’m at home, I usually pet my dogs and cuddle with them. It’s fine if you don’t have pets! Use a stuffed animal or pillow or something that’s soft and warm.
I hope that helps! Sorry this comment was so long.

I used to have the full blown phobia. I actually remember watching your last video while having an anxiety attack because I was so scared to get sick. As I have gotten older I have gotten over the phobia, I have a very very mild case of the phobia, and now I loveeeee food so much.I literally have no idea what helped me. I guess because I’m older now and I I’m super busy and my mind is always completely preoccupied that I just got over it over time. Before I was super scared to go outside and do regular things I would never go outside. Now that I have bills to pay I have no choice to go outside 😭

I'm so happy I found your channel, 'cause it's not that easy to find someone to open up about this topic out there. Also, you're always so positive! I've been struggling with emetophobia for the last 8 years, and it's been a complete nightmare. Some months it gets a little more bearable, some other months it gets terrifying and absolutely out of control. I've been in therapy for 11 months now, and I managed to overcome many, many things - my social anxiety is slightly diminished, and also my signs of depression faded and almost disappeared in ways I'd never imagine -, yet my emetophobia is still present, affecting every single moment of my daily life. My therapist doesn't seem to be willing to go deeper into this phobia, she's probably linking it to other matters she thinks she kind of 'cured', and that is really frustrating. I remember watching your last Emetophobia update, in which you tell us about you being sick and actually dealing with it, and I thought 'wow that's great, she was sick, she realized it's not that big of a deal and she's better now', yet, in this video, you're saying that your emetophobia is still there, and I'm very sorry about that. That makes me kinda sad. I mean, your story gave me so much hope I could overcome this hell of a fear by getting sick someday and surviving it, but everthing makes me realize how this is probably an incurable phobia. I don't know. How can you manage to overcome your fear, when that fear is your body itself? Dammit. My family doesn't exactly know about my phobia, my sister tells jokes about it sometimes, and honestly I'm not even gonna explain to her how bad it actually is. My friends know they mustn't burp when I'm around... that's insane. But, actually, they don't even imagine that other than hating it 'cause it is damn rude, I'm totally terrified of that.
And wow this was a long one, so sorry about that. You just don't get to talk to someone about emetophobia everyday (without being looked at as if you were crazy af, also), so I got a lil' carried away. Thank you so much for your videos

Hi Jona! I know I'm two years late hehe, but I think I have emetophobia. I'm 12, and I believe it was triggered somewhere around the age of 6 when i had a HORRIBLE stomach bug a few days after my birthday. I was up the whole night and it seemed like it would never end. I haven't been sick in about almost a year, but I'm still worried. My friends usually make fun of me when I try to tell them, and my parents think that I'm making up this phobia or that I'm overreacting. If I print out a factual sheet, they wouldn't care. What should I do? Also, i loveeeee your videos :)

My emetophobia is a little different, It doesn’t bother me seeing people be sick in movies or tv shows, it makes me a little uneasy and uncomfortable but I don’t have a full blown panic attack about it, or when people puke in front of me, if I know it’s just because they’re drunk or have food poisoning it makes me uneasy but I don’t panic over it, but if I think they’re sick I run as far away as possible.

I think I have misophonia. I don't know. I already hated sick/throw up. But honesty I can't deal with eating or breathing sounds. I'll deal with it for a couple minutes, (eating noises annoy/anger me, it doesn't give me anxiety) but sometimes I get so fed up that I just can't be in a room with people eating. I dont mind if we're BOTH eating. Cause I don't really focus on theirs. But if I'm just like sitting in silence with somebody eating I have to leave.

This has started being a problem for me. I get these cycles in my head saying that any normal stomach noises, a normal temperature and things like that are all early signs of this specific virus. When people cough or sneeze I start to panic and if I cough or sneeze I panic as well. I start panicking over needing to use hand sanitizer and it’s starting to effect my life

Revisiting your videos now that my emetophobia is flaring up again, and it got me thinking. Did anyone else’s emetophobia cause them to develop anorexia, or be a major favor in developing it?

Elly Green for me close to it, in second grade I would hardly eat and I lost a lot of weight, but it never turned into anorexia

superepicdonutguy T Thats just rude- you need to properly talk to them about it because my Mum wasn't like that, but she was a little bit skeptical of it, and then when she got it she was super nice about it as she realised how bad it was

Question about my emetephobia: If your not feeling well is it because your scared and really nervous to get sick and your just really nauseous, or are you really sick? (ik I'm a fan account sorry)

Nice, thanks for the weird, but helpful video. There's also this other weird website, by Gunther Streplock (which you can google if you want), that can help you smash the anxiety and fear of facing stressful situations. It's not perfect and DOES take maybe a week or two to work, but it's not about wasting months just talking about it.

Great video ! I've had secondary emetophobia (yes that is a thing) since the age of 5, I have been anxious since so many years but it got better, the day I was really anxious all out of a sudden I started watching your videos and I instantly fell in love with the video styles. I've gotten alot better since I somewhat faced my fear through pics and vid's. If someone of you also has secondary emetophobia you should defenitely check out this group on fb, we are a great community and we help each other any time, we wont ignore any posts (this is not self-advertisement) : facebook.com/groups/1048733408494438/
