  • Emetophobia is an intense fear of being sick or of feeling sick and often includes huge anxiety about people that simply look a little unwell.
It can be quite debilitating and this video is the first in a series that is designed to de-sensitize clients to their phobic response.
It is simply a drawing of a stick man with a line coming from his mouth, and it gradually introduces the word 'vomit'.
It is meant to be watched again and again until it becomes dull, before moving onto the next video in the series.
Some clients take only a few hours to lower their anxiety scale from 10 down to 2 or 3, some may take weeks, just do it in your own time and in consultation with your therapist.

I hate when people underestimate emetophobia... it truly does ruin some people's lives.

+Lex Summers Stick at it Lex, don't accept it.
I know it can feel like slow progress and I know it sounds cheesy but it's true what people say "A million miles starts with one step". Cheesy and over-used in self-help circles, but true.

+Skylar Yon I know that it can be quite a slow process. But hopefully watching it enough times can desensitise you to it.
Because of the irony that Anxiety can make us feel ill, Emetophobia takes a bit longer to work on than some other phobias. Persist with it though, you'll get there, and then you can move onto the second one and do the same thing.
After that you'll probably be able to begin some face to face therapy with someone and get moving further and further forward.

This is actually pretty helpful for a first step, ive been struggling with emetaphobia for 8 years and I want to recover from it, and honestly this is a very comforting and simple way to start exposure, baby steps

It’s so important to take it slowly, yes.
Anxiety often causes nausea, so too much exposure too soon can actually set some people back a bit.
Be patient and you’ll get there. Well done for getting started.

Hey Richard, could definitely use your help, my daughter has vomit phobia and she's started to avoid things she normally loves completely. She's been getting counselling but hasn't helped much.

Happy to help Brad, if she isn't close to one of my clinics I can see her online.
She can get some info about me at www.motivateyourself.co.uk and www.midlandshypnotherapy.com

2 years ago I was so scared of vomiting that I couldn't read that word, now I can, but I'm still scared of feeling sick.
    P.s. V**** means f*** in Finnish :D

My emetophobia isn't really that serious I can honestly hear the V word 1000 times with no problems, it's seeing or hearing someone else do it

There are no rules with this unfortunately. This is why therapy needs to be very specific to each patient with emetophobia.
If you have a therapist that you're seeing maybe they can put something together for you that's a little more gentle.
Maybe you can come back to this at some point in the future and be ok with it.
      Good luck.

Thanks, I dont have a therapist at the moment, I hardly leave my house since a serious assault a couple of years ago, which has brought on the panic more and more, and hence also nausea, which is kind of why I ended up here :( The nausea is now probably as terrifying as the nightmares and flashbacks. Which makes me panic more, and get more nauseous. :(

Anon mous Flashbacks might mean you could do with some EMDR therapy possibly.
It’s a face to face session but you might find a psychotherapist or clinical psychologist who provides home visits. Look into it, even if it’s just idea for the future.
It doesn’t do any harm to plan for what comes next, you certainly don’t need to make any appointments yet.
      Take your time.
