Yeah TPS was the first game where we saw the playable Hunter's personalities. We didn't learn much of anything about the Lilith's bunch until 2, and most of what we learned about 2's Hunters was a handful of ECHOlogs in the last half of the game and their Idle dialogues.

I don't think Pre-Sequel deserved all the hate it got, but it's definitely understandable WHY people hated it, what with the lack of content and the questionable gameplay decisions made. I think it was summed up best at the GDQ Co-Op speedrun of the game; "It has every right to be a better game than BL2, it just isn't."

    • @HaveYouTriedGuillotines

...Garbage SJW social agendas, bad writing (which happens when you have SJWs working on your game), long, unfocused plot that drags on and accomplishes nothing other than ruining a bunch of established characters... Awkward and often mediocre skills, lots of half assed mechanics, some of the new additions are nice but they're altogether overshadowed by an assortment of flaws, some that aren't even new and should have been fixed a long time ago (wonky vehicle physics and moon buggies don't mix).
Oh, and it's absolutely unfunny. The humor of BL2 is just gone altogether. Again, letting SJWs write pretty much destroys any potential a game can have. People who live inside a delusional ideological funhouse world can't write anything even remotely relatable, and thus they can't write humor.
It's certifiably a stinker. The ONLY thing the game does better than BL2 is the scaling. Which is what killed BL2 for me. BL2 had some frankly garbage problems in the gameplay department too, but it's a rare case of writing and setting saving an otherwise fundamentally flawed game. That simply wasn't there for TPS.

Takedowns are the biggest waste of time. I can't believe how excited people get for them. The worst thing about Borderlands 3 was how boring the combat was, I definitely don't want to spend my time to go through ANOTHER enemy gauntlet. What BL3 really needed was an incentive to do anything. Enemies were too easy, no point in getting better weapons, the story was a dumpster fire, no reason to play through it, and the character trees are pretty dull, no reason to level up. BL3 was so close to being an awesome game but they traded their fantastic cast and interesting world building for a really watered down coming of age story dominated by stronk women. It is also pretty stupid that the story completely ignores the player character and instead pretend Lilith and the little girl actually contributed.
I'm generally not a fan of the idea that a game isn't good because they don't keep adding more things to do after you've beaten the game. That's a silly motivation to play a game, especially when there's already plenty to challenge yourself with. A game isn't good because it just isn't good.

    I loooved pre-sequel.
I'm a mark for double jumps in any game. Especially considering in the previous entries, I spent so much time scaling walls and cliffs purely for exploration and looking for secrets. This just took that to a new level.
My other big love for this game was some of the characters. Idk if it's just by circumstance or what, but in every borderlands, the best legendaries I would find always ended up being revolvers. So playing with Nisha felt right at home and pretty much op with her ability.
Claptrap was great at keeping things fresh in single player. Really incentivizing having a wide array of weaponry.
My two favorite classes of Borderlands are snipers and sirens. I've also always gravitated toward ice element in any medium. So Aurelia felt like she was made just for me.
Strangest thing to hear for me is that the general consensus positives are laser guns and Jack. I don't dislike either one, but neither of them really stood out to me. But to each their own I suppose.

@@UnClonable yeah but then there's gonna be some of those people that would be pissed off because Raid Bosses are locked behind a paywall. I would want to see Gearbox make more DLC expansions like another 4 more DLCs for a 2nd season pass or something. Borderlands 3 file size isn't all that big compared to other games that go over 150gb storage, Borderlands 3 is sitting around almost at 100gb. So Borderlands 3 wouldn't suffer on more DLC content after DLC 4.

Glitched weapons were the greatest. The Claptrap DLC was also one of the best DLC's from the older Borderlands. Had a cool story, built on the world in really interesting ways, explains why claptrap isn't a vault hunter in BL2, and had one of the cooler worlds. Also, I think some of the ways in which the world of that DLC moved and changed in exploring his memories helped inform some of how they wanted to handle TTW's world, there's a lot of similarities there.

Hell, even the vault hunters having small bits of dialogue with characters was great.
The main thing that really made me annoyed by the end was the enemy scaling as mentioned in the video (Dear god I've never felt so punished being on par with quests), and the pacing of the story has felt the worst in the series. Going to the Hyperion space station felt like a great climax in the story... only for you to spend half of the game in there, with main quests jumping up as much as 3 levels at a time. In borderlands 3 The only things I really enjoy are the movement and most of the quality of life changes.
    Everything else just feels worse.
The fact that almost everything was a world drop on release, the lack of raid bosses and the un-fun mayhem mode killed the late game for me. I also hear that the late game is still not fun and that most guns are underpowered.
The guns look "off" in borderlands 3, they look more rounded, too futuristic(compared the the previous games) and very similar to each other, I want to know if other people feel this way about the guns or if I'm just crazy.
The main story's villains are generic and annoying, I know that hitting the same greatness as handsome jack would be almost impossible, but they could of at least tried.
The main story itself feels like it's missing something, beyond good villains, It also just dropped the plot set up by borderlands TPS(Which I was really invested in), and it drags on for way too long. There was multiple times where I was just hoping it would end so that I could stop playing.
    SPOILERS
Borderlands 3's plot just does so many things I hate.
Lilith as a character I hated more and more as the series went on to the point of rejoicing when she "died".
Maya's death felt like it was made just to copy Roland death, and to make the villains more hate-able.
Avia isn't that bad of a character I just hate how she only exists to replace Maya.
Troy almost got interesting as a villain, but it was already way too late in the game.
Tannis gets a little more interesting but then she just kind of stops.
and I could see all the twists from a mile away, they were just so generic.
I've watched a playthrough of DLC 1 and somewhat enjoyed it, because handsome jack is a great character.
I played DLC 2 and mostly enjoyed it's plot.
DLC 3 looks extremely generic and boring and I've heard/seen almost nothing about it.
and DLC 4 looks like claptastic voyage + Krieg so I'm excited about that, but I was really hoping for a sequel to assault on dragon keep DLC.
I plan on playing through borderlands 3 again once dlc 4 drops and/or when they stop updating the game, because I feel like most gameplay problems will or have been be fixed with patches, and if not then I'll just wait for modders to fix it.
The game's plot and gameplay are so close yet so far to being great. I can only hope that the DLC's plot and game patches fix this game up.

I will say, one important thing about TPS to me is that I think it has THE best story/leveling experience. It has no endgame, this is undeniably true, but since I never really cared much for the endgame of this series anyway TPS is honestly my favorite of the games. At the least, I'll certainly say as such as many days as I'll say 2 is.
The replayability of each character is great, since they ALL feel extremely unique both amongst each other and just in design compared to the rest of the series. I'd say Wilhelm is the most conventional character, but even he has a lot of really fun things going on-I ADORE the way his blue tree works. Having your character visibly and AUDIBLY descend deeper into his mechanization is...good God, it's so good. TPS did something no other game in the series has yet, where the NPCs talk TO you, and that's amazing.
Sure, BL2 and BL3 have responses from your character, but TPS is the only game where the NPCs will actually acknowledge your character specifically and talk to you during the story. That makes the story feel so much more alive as you replay, even if nothing severe changes. I think this one thing would make me like playing through BL3's story so much more. The BL3 vault hunters, I'm realizing more, are all REALLY great characters. They're fun! They're a _lot_ of fun. But there's so much less room for them to show that when nobody reacts to who they are, they're just The Vault Hunter.

But heck, when the game gets good it really GETS GOOD. I love the intro in Helios and the background music, all the Felicity Plot-line was amazing, and fun (including the maps), and Hyperion Hall of Heroes-R&D is trully fun to move around.

I can answer this question in 2 seconds: Lack of content and lack of dedicated drops. 2k Australia went under before they could finish a second story DLC, plus Claptastic Voyage never had any raid bosses and the base game only had 1 that was just a harder version of the final boss, and while I think the intention of not making many dedicated drops was to make it closer to BL1 and they tried to compensate by having vendors constantly filled with blue and purple rarity weapons and you could always use the grinder to get a random legendary of a certain type if you knew the recipe it still kind sucks that you can't have access to your favorite weapons without even more farming than BL2. I loved the story, I loved the playable characters, I thought the enhanced mobility that low gravity added was incredibly fun. I even think the lack of dedicated drops thing could be ignored if it got even half the amount of extra content BL2 got because mechanically it's so much better.

Honestly, TPS is my favorite Borderlands game for multiple reasons:
    1. The characters actually had conversations with the NPCs, featuring different voice lines and different responses; BL2 had zero reaction from your character and BL3 did a step back with having the NPCs react witht he same sentence everytime (this caused the player characters voice lines to feel like the same sentence just said differently).
    2. The game was overall more balanced and challenging, BL2 and BL3 on normal playthrough were WAY too easy, I didnt even know that the Constructors from BL2 could launch NUKES, because we always killed them in seconds... BL2 only became challenging on the 3rd playthrough, which was also kinda anoying, because you NEEDED to use Slag, because in in the 3rd playthrough it reduces HP to only a 3rd and otherwise the enemies would have too much hp.... BL3 also had horrible balancing, with most bosses only taking SECONDS to beat
    3. Legendaries and rare weapons where actually rare, BL2 was a bit worse in that regard, but nothing compared to BL3, where you get drowned in them; combine that with BL3 legendaries being even more OP and you suddenly dont need to swap your gun anymore for half of the game, or use any other gun than that legendary
    4. The skill trees were the most interesting; as others pointed out, there was just something special about the skill tree in TPS, it truly felt like customizing your characters, while in BL2 and 3 the "progress" just doesnt feel that well.
    5. Interesting mechanics, as the gun combiner, where you could scrap old guns to build better new ones and the moonshine guns, you could get from the special locked chests. I also like the jetpack system and that you could slam the ground.
The one thing I liked about BL3 alot more was the fact that guns felt like guns now and not toys, the sound and feeling was ALOT better in that game. But the thing I hated the most was the horrible story, it felt so extremely forced and had nothing to do with what the Eridian at the end warned them about. How do some bandits pose any threat at all, or more threat compared to a giant corporation that can lanch nukes and highly advanced robots on demand at the planet surface? And where did they even come from to be important? Jack and Hyperion were present in BL1 and basically any game, the entire story of Borderlands was started by Hyperion/Jack.
Honestly, the story felt like it was just a flimsy replacement and knowing that the originally wanted to bring back Jack in BL3, I dont think I am wrong...

I played it for the first time not too long ago and the Game felt more like borderlands 1 to me, the Main story anyway, it just felt more gritty like bl1 and the soundtrack too reminded me of it. And the space setting was cool as well, and seeing all the Dahl stuff instead of Hyperion, the posters in Concordia really look cool to me and showed what Dahl is as a mega corporation. That and all the abandoned dahl stuff was just such a cool change from bl2 which I had played many times before.

I love the fact that I was never much online so I didn't knew about how the game was received. By this I was only confused to why the steam reviews weren't good as I had a blast with the game and I this it's the best in the series for me. Only wishing it had as much content as BL2 has due to lack of DLCs.

Nisha and claptrap are some of the most fun I've ever had in borderlands

I always loved the pre-sequel, and since I played the handsome collection as my first borderlands experience, I started with the pre-sequel and then went to BL2 and it flowed really well and each had its own special dynamic,
Between Elpis and the Oz Kits and all the Australian influence from 2K Australia, or the cryo and laser weapons I just loved it and then when I played BL2 it still felt fresh and man, I love these games lol

The actual dialogue between your vault hunters and the npcs were really fucken sick. Their dialogue changes too depending on who you choose.

The thing I love about TPS is that they kept the bl2 engine, and the gameplay is the best in the series also imo, I hear a lot of people saying that they "didn't put enough effort" into the game but I look at it of more of an add on game to the series. The pre sequel will forever be one of my favorite games

I worked with folks that tested this at 2K. In 2016 when I noted that I finally checked out the game, they apologized for it's condition. It was different, but not horrible. I think it deserves recognition. Good vid.

This is a very good video! Finally someone who actually voices the same opinion I have of the game. And it's well edited too, with an easy to follow narrative/timeline.

Pre Sequel had the most fun skill trees/action skills of all three the first games.
    Legit. Fight me on this.
Duel pistol wielding, head shotting everything as Nisha? Fuck yes.
Reviving a teammate cross map while feeling like captain america.
Turning yourself into the literal terminator was awesome too 😂
