Professor Gustavo Gasperin explains why there should be no differentiation between sport and self-defense. It's all Jiu Jitsu.

But Prof. Gustavo, many BJJ black belts don't teach the self defense, and a lot of them are black belts that simply never learn it! I think you see it this way because your lineage is from one of self defense, but not all black belts have as prestigious a lineage as your own.

Problem is that many many academies now don’t train self defense and when their higher belts get into a real fight they get iced.....

No they don’t this is your own bias. No black belt gets iced

This is an excellent point. Verdum is a great example, and here's another: Eduardo Telles is known as "The Turtle Master." There are others who use this crazy guard well (Josh Russell comes to mind) but Telles has achieved at a very high level. He also had a few MMA fights and did very well. Why? Because he's a BLACK BELT. He knows more than one guard and technique. He won a fight with a quick and beautiful guillotine. Won another with a great head kick. That's right, the "Turtle Master" is very dangerous. Train, learn, and improve in everything. Great post!

There’s a guy in my town who’s a Black Belt under Jean Jacques Machado, and another Black Belt under Ryron Gracie, does it matter who I learn from? I want to learn self defense for the street, but if I’m playfully rolling with a friend or girlfriend, I wanna to just use sport on them.

Find a Judo place and if you get the chance grapple with wrestlers whenever. Learn from them. But for now I'd take the comment aboves advice if you can afford it.

Brother Grappling does not teaching you to take on multiple attackers, grappling does bot teach you to disarm weapons or counter punches and kicks or how to escape choke hold, bjj can be beneficial for street use but its not enough

    • @MMALeech
      @MMALeech  4 роки тому +2

Brother you don't know what you are talking about. Jiu Jitsu does teach you how to disarm weapons, block kicks and punches from the standing position and on the ground, and obviously how to escape choke holds. That's part of the self-defense curriculum. Not all Jiu Jitsu gyms teach that because not all gyms have the self-defense curriculum, some gyms have only the sport currriculum.
Now, Jiu Jitsu is not perfect when it comes to self-defense, there are some things and scenarios that are missing from the curriculum, but that's also true for all other martial arts. If you wanna be more complete and well rounded when it comes to self-defense, you gotta look outside of Jiu Jitsu to supplement your training.

Great advice Professor and I certainly agree that being not only a well rounded person but an even more well rounded practitioner is truly important. I am a white belt who just competed for the first time last month and it was the closest thing to a real conflict in a competitive atmosphere which really helped my perspective and I gained so much knowledge about myself. Thank you for all you do.

In my knowledge I believe there is a big difference between sport jiu jitsu and mma/ street jiu jitsu. I believe sport jiu jitsu will beat any guys up in street against average joe but i believes mma jiu jitsu style will win more. I rather spend time getting out of mount while some punching me then getting out of a mount by some1 collar choking me

Do you think it's ok to kick in the balls in self defense? And how is the best way to do it?

  • @troypierce5055

I think the supposed divergence between sport bjj and street bjj is waaay overhyped. The guys who are world champions in sport bjj would completely dominate in a one-on-one street fight. In fact, winning a street fight is a walk in the park compared to winning a bjj world championship (due to the DRASTICALLY lower skill set possessed by the average person on the streets compared to a bjj world champion competitor). Let me be clear: a bjj world champion would EASILY win a street fight.
Yes, some bjj techniques are more suited to a bjj tournament with rules than a street fight (open guard techniques like the 50/50, dela riva, berimbolo [spelling?], for example), but to assume that a high level bjj world champion doesn't know enough basic bjj to win a simple street fight is ridiculous. Just because they have to resort to more complex (and sometimes less practical) techniques to win a bjj world championship doesn't mean they don't know the basic bjj techniques required to win a simple street fight.
It is a false narrative to suggest that by competing in sport bjj tournaments you are making your overall bjj game WEAKER. In fact, it is quite the opposite - competing in bjj tournaments makes your bjj game STRONGER for both bjj competition and on the streets. To somehow suggest that by competing in bjj tournaments you are making your bjj LESS effective is the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
The sad thing is that some of the older Gracie family members (Royce, Rickson, Royler, etc.) seem to like to spread this misinformation - that modern bjj world champions are less prepared for a street fight than they are. It seems like some of the older Gracies are upset that they can no longer win modern bjj championships (due to their old age and the evolution of the sport - the bjj techniques of today are much more efficient than the bjj techniques of old). Since these older Gracies are no longer on top, so some of them like to spread the lie that modern bjj world champions can't even win a simple street fight because sport bjj has gotten too far removed from the traditional self-defense bjj techniques taught by the Gracie family (they do this to feed their own egos and to try make themselves feel as if they are still relevant). But this is complete nonsense. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. While some bjj techniques ARE better suited for a sport setting than a street fight, a bjj world champion has more than enough bjj knowledge to win a simple street fight. A street fight is a COMPLETE JOKE compared to winning a bjj world championship.
To sum up, competing in sport bjj does NOT make your bjj LESS effective - it only makes your bjj MORE dangerous both on the streets and in bjj competition.

Agreed. I think a part of old school guys hyping the sport vs self defence schism is a reaction to their schools no longer being dominant in sport competitions. I suspect that a competition focussed gym that features skilled variable intensity rolling will better prepare members to withstand and escape an attack than a self defence one that does lots of LARPing of techniques Helio thought were cool in the 1950s.
