Dr. Samuel Perry and Dr. Philip Gorski join BJC Executive Director Amanda Tyler for a conversation about their new book, titled "The Flag and the Cross: White Christian Nationalism and the Threat to American Democracy."
Gorski and Perry are sociologists, who teach respectively at Yale University and the University of Oklahoma, and have documented the rise of white Christian nationalism in the United States. This webinar was broadcast live on May 16, 2022, just days after the shooting in Buffalo, New York, and the authors explained that the white supremacist views the shooter expressed in an online statement line up with classic Christian nationalist beliefs and rhetoric, even though the killer admitted to not being a Christian.
