  • Sea Kayaking Scarba, Corryvreckan, Jura's West Coast Part 2: April 2023
Day 2: After an Impressive 1st 2 days of our 5 day trip off the West Coast of Scotland, we left Andy at Easdale after topping up our water supplies, then headed off South down the Sound of Luing to Stalkers Bothy on the South East corner of Scarba where Iain and I spent a pleasant evening over a wee dram and fruit cake.
Day 3: Stalkers Bothy gave us a perfectly timed starting point to catch the start of the Flood stream to take us through Corryvreckan and across to the North West of Jura passing just inside Eilean Beag outside the 'Bay of Pigs". Once across Correvreckan we continued our journey South down the West of Jura and a brief stop at Gengarrisdale before heading down to Corpach Bay for lunch. We continued South passing Shian Bay before checking out my old favourite camp spot, a sheltered in the corner just North of Ruantallain. As Iain had never used this camp before we headed around the corner into the bay in front of Ruantallain Bothy on the North Western corner of Loch Tarbert.
We set up the tents as the Bothy didn't look that appealing and a long carry for all our cooking and sleeping equipment through a boggy grassed area.
I've added drone footage of Corryvreckan in an attempt to explain the tidal dynamics of of the overfalls and whirlpool are with cautions on entering with any westerly swell.
Don't forget to Subscribe to be notified when Part 3: is uploaded as you won't want to miss our Escape from the West Side of Jura in Force 7 justing Force 8 winds!!! Coming Shortly!!!

Hi Bob and thanks for your comments...its very much appreciated and nice to know folk are enjoying being with me on my adventures . I'm right in the thick of this year's kayaking which is leaving me little to no time to edit loads of footage from recent trips.
Off to Orkney for 10 days exped, back for 2 weeks then off back up to Shetland for another 10 days exped.
Hopefully I'll be able to get more video's out for you while my wife rehabs her knee replacement June 20th !

@@geoffburke Hello Geoff, many thanks for your kind note. Your comments about the bathymetry and the pinnacle made me found this video about the channel: ua-cam.com/video/SGCSvqTQZOk/v-deo.htmlsi=olGc32hhhonpTour ... I assume the depth of Corrywreckan and the effect of the funnel (the Sound of Jura gets tighter and tighter northwards) explains why Corrywreckan floods to the West? I will kayak that area in May and will set up camp, just like you, on Scarba to watch the entire tide cycle. All the best and thank you, Geoff.

@@marcusdemuth3154 Thanks Marcus, so pleased you found that video (I've watched it several times) it goes a long way to understanding what actually happens in the Gulf. Having dived Corryvreckan around Eilean Mor & Eilean Beg, Grey Dogs channel and that wider area quite extensively over the years it gives a greater understanding what causes the tide races and turbulence we experience at the surface. As mention in my video's my great friend Grahame Bruce from Ellenabeich dive Corryvreckan's pinnacle at lease once a year requiring great skill and meticulous planning, his accounts and photography are amazing!
Give me a shout when you're going up, I've got quite a lot going on from now right through the year but if I can make I'd be happy to join you.
Keep in touch. All the best 👍 Geoff

@@marcusdemuth3154 I forgot to mention, camping is quite difficult on Scarba from the beach near the whirlpool area, big boulders in the bracken (not impossible though) I've used the cave in the past but it's very wet and dirty now!

@@geoffburke Thank you so much, Geoff. Also for the info re the beach midchannel on Scarba, maybe its better to beach at the bothy and then walk over to watch the channel. Divers get the whole 3D picture, able to move down (and up), while kayakers are limited to the surface. Now knowing about the 200 m deep channel , I find it still hard to wrap your head around, that the majority of the water masses choose to make a hard 90 degree left hand turn into the Corryvreckan, rather than going further straight up North.

I can understand given your location, lack of tidal flow and dynamic wave activity that the West Coast of Scotland can have a real appeal to you but looking at your UA-cam channel you have some beautiful areas for relaxing paddles to enjoy also.
The joy of canoeing/kayaking for me is all about enjoyment and our sport is so diverse there are always places to kick vack and relax from the stresses and strains of life.

Yes, I think its so important to address areas that need caution, I'd hate to think that viewers could be easily inspired to 'give things a go' after watching a video without any explanation as to the complexity and potential dangers from the person posting the video. A bit like 'gaming' these games now are so realistic, I'm horrified that society and social media has such a hold on people they could loose reality and go out, cutting people up and shooting folk....maybe it's me being paranoid but I'd rather give an explanation with some caution attached than folks getting into difficulties. The levels we paddle at are far from a Sunday afternoon on a sit on top or paddle board!! 🤔🤔😂
Thanks James...stay tuned for Part 3: Coming soon, I hope! (It takes so long to edit)

Hi Pam and Thanks again for your wonderful comments, you're too kind 😊 My tent is the OEX Bandicoot II it's a 2 man tent so quite roomy and works really well for me. It's excellent and proved itself many times in strong winds and has never leaked, it weighs 3.1kg, not supa lightweight hut it splits into 2 bags to assist in packing in the front hatch. It has been a cracking tent and idea for my kayak camping trips.
I suspect Berghaus has got the licence to make it under the name of 'Cheviot 2'.

Hi Geoff. Thanks so much for your usual high quality video and entertaining commentary. Is Iain paddling a carbon Nordkapp? Your segment on the Corryvrekkan was most interesting. I really do not wish to meet up with this amazing feature anytime soon. To see a standing and cresting wave appear out of nowhere would be a scary thing and means that a certain respect must be shown. Really looking forward to the next part of this trip. Your teaser promises an exciting journey. So glad the back op was a success. My wife is scheduled a hip replacement next month. I will be letting her know that Geoff Burke was rolling his kayak after 8 weeks. Well done. Stay safe.....Peter

      @geoffburke  Рік тому

Hi Peter, thanks for joining me and so pleased you're still enjoying my little adventures 😊 Yes, spot on, it is indeed a carbon Nordkapp.
Corryvreckan is an amazing phenomenon and not to be taken lightly. I find it a real dilemma when I take groups through and always try to ensure there is a reasonable flow without scaring the pants off them but going through on absolute slack gives a false impression that they could feel it's a none event, an just a load of hype!! As I mentioned in the video any swell on the West side would give even the best paddler a hard time. Still love it though...an amazing place ❤
If Jane is able to work on hip strengthening/bike exercises, tell her my advice is do as much as she can. I did around 50 mile on a standard bike a couple of days before my double knee replacements and around 60 plus on my ebike a couple of weeks(2 weeks isolation prevented any later cycling due to Hospital Covid regs) before my hip. This regime really helped my recovery each time. And the 5 day trip video you've just watched was shot 3 weeks before my spinal decompression & vertebrae fusion op. Had my 1st trip out in the Kayak today after my spine op (the magic 8 weeks again! 😂) and managed 6.5 miles, didn't want to push too hard as I don't start physio for another 4 weeks 😱😲 she's not going to be pleased 🤔
Thanks again and I wish Jane all the very best for her new hip and trust her rehab goes as good as mine 👍👍
