I’m sorry that you missed the view. I am only 40% sold on visiting Zermatt. The day that a visit would work out is our travel day from Montreux to Locarno. I am leaning more towards Chamonix and a trip up to Mont-Blanc. This travel day is between multiple days in the same hotels so I am comfortable with leaving early and arriving late. I believe that one must allot at least 4 hours round trip from Visp to see the Matterhorn. Does that sound reasonable?
I don't think Zermatt/Matterhorn is worth the trek unless you stay there overnight. Zermatt is a nice town to explore and the 5 Lakes Hike looks epic. Since they're only accessible by train, not sure if the limited time that you have will be enough to enjoy it.
