It was nice that you started with a small historic description of Stockholm and Sweden. Couple of comments; Finland was never ever occupied by Sweden, it was an integral and core part of the Swedish Kingdom. During Napoleonic wars Russia (as always) attacked Sweden and the eastern part was carved out. Not due to culture, language or anything but just geographical reasons. The area which is now Stockholm was an important hub long before it was founded, from stone age, nordic bronze age and the vendel period, through the viking age to medevial time when Stockholm officially became a town according the new way of defining towns. A minor thing obviously, you are not wrong but nice to clarify.

1:43 Nope, the Royal family doesn't actually live there anymore. They moved to Drottningholm Castle in 1981. It's about 10 km west of Stockholm city. It's well worth a visit, in the summer, one can take a ferry there, which is the nicest way to get there, or go by subway and bus, which is a bit cheaper. There is a really beautiful park, and a very nice location by the water. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The castle theatre, built in the 1760s, is still in use, and it's stunning.
The Royal castle is just the work place for the Royal family nowadays. The Crown Princess and her family live in another castle, Haga slott, which is about 5 km north of Stockholm city. That's where the King grew up.

Yes. Everybody knows they don't actually live there. but it's the official address ot Swedish Crown, and the Headquarters of the Swedish royals. Drottningholm is meant to be a secret residence. ;)

Really nice video of my hometown! If you like history, you reallt should visit the Livrustkammaren, the museum of the Swedish historical royalties. It´s placed under the Royal Palace and it is very fascinating. The Royal Palace, where the Royal family works and represents but not lives, is also amazing and worth a visit. Also Skansen, the open-air-museum at Djurgården with Swedish animals and historical buildings is great. Hope you can back to visit again!

Just to clarify: the Stockholm archipelago has 30000 islands. Stockholm city is mostly built on islands but not all 30000 of them😁
If you are ever in Stockholm in the summer I can recommend taking a boat with Vaxholmsbolaget - ideally one of the old steam boats - for an archipelago tour. I'm biased but in my opinion the outer archipelago is one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Between the 17th and the 19th century the Riddarhuset (House of Nobility) worked as the chamber of the nobility in the Parliament of the Estates.
Riddarholmskyrkan (Riddarholmen Church) has huge significance in Sweden's history, since it's the historical burial church for our kings.

You really should spend more time in Stockholm. In Djurgården alone can take a day to cover. Along Abba museum there are four other museums to cover swedish Culture and history with old buildings, and a warship from 1600's... And Zoo and amusement park...

You should take your time and go through alll the smaller side exhibiotions, where they talk about the life on board and many, many other interesting facts about the ship and life in the 17th century

"Gamla stan" (old town) was formerly known as "The city between the bridges".

      Why formerly?

    • @ExcitingTaste
      @ExcitingTaste 9 днів тому +1

@@Quirderph The term "Gamla Stan," which means "Old Town," became the common name for the historic center of Stockholm as the city expanded and modernized. Originally, this area was known as "Staden mellan broarna," or "The City between the Bridges," because it is situated on an island connected by several bridges.
As Stockholm grew, new districts and neighborhoods were developed, and the need to distinguish the historic core from the newer parts of the city led to the adoption of the name "Gamla Stan."

A 1000 years before the Swedish Empire, Vikings spread to exactly the same areas.
(Vikings originates from the middle of Sweden, and then they spread to Norway and Denmark, and further on.)
Then, 1000 years later, Norway, Finland, and Denmark existed as countries when Sweden took them over, and the Swedish Empire was created.
BUT Russia didn't exist when Sweden had that area.
Russia is a very young country founded in the 17th century by the Tsars.
Before that, Russia was called the Moscow State, and was an area just around Moscow.
Stockholm as a settlement/village dates back 1500 years, maybe even 2000 years.
    "Stock" translates "Log"
    "Holm" translates "Small island"
So the original village, Stockholm, was just Gamla Sta'n (The Old Town)
Why didn't you tell more about Gamla Sta'n, maybe the oldest town in Northern Europe.
Walking on 2000 year old streets, but telling that Stockholm is 700 years old ???
Stockholm got its official "town rights" 700 years ago, thats something completely different!
