Congratulations there is a lot to look out for but don't let your anxiety gets too bad with all these scare stories everything's going to be okay as long as you're paying attention

I stopped swaddling and started using those zipper, wearable blankets for babies over a onesie or sleep and play, depending on the season. Some have sleeves, some don't but then I put it over pjs. The reason is because my very young baby was swaddled in blankets like they do at the hospital, and he somehow rolled over. After all a swaddled baby is like a log or a cylinder. He was on his face turning blue. I didn't hear him and he was in my room, crib right next to me. My 3 year old woke up to tell me he needed to go potty and I immediately saw my baby struggling. If he hadn't needed to pee, I don't know what would have happened. That was years ago and it still makes me feel sick to think about. I'm so very grateful he's ok.

My children are already 30 years old, so in Europe they stopped swaddling babies in blankets already then. Keep up, America
@@bambinaforever1402 Some moms swaddle for months which I don't understand. The baby doesn't want to be swaddled at 6 or 8 month, they want to stretch out and be comfortable. Some babies are even walking at that age. I think they are in denial that their baby is getting older.
Sorry, I'm not a native speaker but I wanted to tell you that I value this information. My baby never liked to be swaddled the first days after birth, so I never tried again, but I thought you only swaddle a baby during daytime anyway for it to calm down (now that I think about). Nonetheless I'm thankful that you've shared your experience, because it's something I didn't think about (baby easily rolling over in that position). I'll keep that in mind for my second child (in case of) and to share it with other moms when appropriate. And I agree with you that when babys grow older, they "grow out" our belly and can find comfort in other ways. I was really anxious about her safety while sleeping in the first weeks (I'm still attentive but much more relaxed now) and I understand the anxiety about that. I put nothing in her bed but herself with the baby sleeping bag (those wearables I think you talked about).
My infant son hated napping and scream and I'd pick him up. Everyone told me let him scream and he'll fall asleep. Ya no. But then one time his screaming stopped and something told me instead of being relieved he finally gave in I went and checked him. Somehow the loose homemade gifted baby blanket had caught on his pinkie and managed to cover his face . He was turning blue. Need to be vigilante

I got a few home-made blankets & wonder why people still make these for babies. "Like thanks I will lay this down on the ground if I take them on a picnic when they are older". But I'm only swaddling them with swaddle blankets, no knitted or crocheted blankets.
Also yeah screw the people who tell you to let a newborn self sooth scream themselves to sleep. They have no knowledge of anything. I've taken 3 colleges courses on their brain development & they are not spoiled or trying to manipulate you. They don't even understand manipulation because their prefrontal cortex isn't developed. They just understand needs, life is a hard adjustment in those first few months aka "the 4th trimester" & their literal brain development relies on you meeting their needs. It's not their fault they weren't born 5 years old with the ability to communicate effectively.
Bed sharing is culturally relevant. For example, in the western world we see a lot of deaths from bed sharing, but we also sleep on thick foam beds with memory foam toppers, due to our climate we often use heavy duvets etc. In other parts of the world beds are hard / firm boards with little padding and due to the heat and humidity blankets are not used or are incredibly light material. We should demonize bed sharing less, and highlight the types of beds that cause these problems.
The beds aren't putting the babies in them to sleep! Parents have to take the responsibility to put their baby somewhere safe to sleep. In a cot with holes on the mattress, no pillows, blankets, teddies or trims tied round the sides is best.
I just doubt most bed sharers would skip the comfort and convenience. I say this as a fellow American. Spartan minimalism is not popular. That's what is necessary for safe bed sharing.
There is a solution to bed sharing, you can place a kind of fence on your bed so that your baby can sleep separately from you but still in the same bed. You can lift the fence up to have access to your baby immediately. Also, western beds are indeed super soft which is bad for a baby. When bed sharing, buy a hard mattress like the Asian ones.
@@dee4716bed sharing is extremely common in places like asia. Eg korea, but they have completely different bed materials than we do it’s completely fine for them.
Japan has low SIDS rates and their culture is mostly bedsharing. Also poor countries, like where my parents family is from, they don't have the luxury of always having a crib so bedsharing is the only option. Low sids rate from that country too! Again, beds are harder and since its hot people mostly sleep with a light sheet.
people, people, please be very careful the kid stuff u buy at thrift stores, yard sales, ebay, etc bc recalled baby items end up there and the price is too good to pass up.
please google anything u wanna buy and ck the reciepts on safety.
in fairness to the thrift stores, they are doing this and rejecting recalled kid items. lastly, i humbly ask that if you do find recalled kid items on the shelf, bring it to the attention of the manager. ty
The thing is that not all babies can sleep flat on their back. Both of my babies had severe gerd so sleeping on their back caused a scare. The hospital told us to have them inclined by putting a thin pillow or wedge Under the mattress to incline the mattress (not over the mattress). Something safe should be invented to help babies that can't sleep on their back. Both of mine are now older so I'm not sure if anything of the sort exists nowadays. I hope there is tho because gerd is dangerous, they can choke.
Exactly! All my babies had this reflux while sleeping on their backs so no way I was going to risk it, too scary.
@@ameg2707 right! It's so scary! With my boys, the reflux was so severe it would come out projectile thru their nose! They couldn't even breathe so I would have to rush to suction their mouth and noses.
There are things on the market today that help with that which are safer. So, yes, there are better and safer products now for that specific need.
One of my cousins also had this problem and needed to sleep on an incline. Her parents, both academics, simply put a couple of thick books books under two legs of her crib. They later boasted that she had "been raised on the classics!"
Exactly! My kid slept in the rock n play until he was about 4 months because of severe gerd, he wouldn’t sleep otherwise. Thankfully he survived! I only wish my infants could sleep on their backs…

Yes. I'm not a mom nor am I around infants, but even I've known this for a long time.
What baffles me is that I go on Pinterest and for whatever reason nursery decor ideas pop up at times when I search for ideas for my bedroom and I see cribs decked out with blankets, plushy things you tie on the edges of the crib (idk what u call those) and sometimes a baby is pictured there in a doc a tot with blankets and stuffed animals.
When people comment that it is not safe, Karen's come out including the one that took the picture and say mind your own business or that they know it's not safe, but done for the "aesthetic" 🥴🤦🏻♀️
Important phrase....leave unattended
Babies die from positional asphyxiation even supervised. It’s silent and the baby will look like they are simply sleeping. None of these types of products should be used for sleeping, supervised or not. Your hand would literally need to be on their chest or your eyes glued to their chest watching the entire time. It’s not worth the risk.
What is unanttended? Some devices listed here are supposed to be used for sleeping.
Babies wake up every 3-4 hours at night. Is that an unanttended baby? Are parents supposed to be awake 24 hours a day?
@@Esperandoonoivo if the caregiver is sleeping then yes the baby is unattended. While unattended the baby should be placed in either a crib, bassinet, or pack and play. Loungers, swings, bouncers, are not safe for sleep (supervised or not) and a baby should never be in them while unattended.
The car seat used to scare me while we were driving because of this reason.

I agree. I think the car seat is worse honestly. My baby will fall asleep and he looks so slumped especially around the neck. I don’t see how these boppy loungers/fisher price rock in play/etc is worse.
I had my 3rd child in 2020 and did not know about the recall, and I used this for both my youngest children with no issues whatsoever
Thank God I am not a parent coz this is making me feel paranoid how to take care of a baby.
When my daughter was an infant, I had one of these fisherprice bouncers and her owlet alarm went off. Meaning she had low oxygen. I of course went and picked her up and her oxygen went back to normal. We then went to the er and everything was fine.
The new Owlet is no longer useful like this. They got into legal issues over it being treated like a medical device without it actually being an official medical device. Legal nonsense...It's unfortunate. It definitely helped with anxiety over a baby's sleep safety.
Always research before you get things or put your babies in them.

Babies have died in adult beds here in the US because they are not made for infants to sleep. People say “well I did and my child survived” people did a lot of dangerous things and their babies died that’s why changes have occurred. My friend’s daughter died in an adult bed at a babysitter’s house. She provided the babysitter with a playard for her daughter to sleep in. Babysitter was told not to allow her to sleep in the bed. Yet she did so anyway. It had nothing to do with pillows or blankets on the bed. It was due to her being stuck in a position and she was rebreathing CO2. She died.
There are other products out there that babies are using that are still on the market, thankfully the dock a tot has been banned from bringing in new dock a tots that were made after a certain date. It was never made to be a sleeping device. And yes they very well are dangerous. Even watching a child they can suffocate right before you without any visual signs.
Bed sharing deaths happen everywhere all over the world its insane to think that it doesn’t. But especially with the items in an American bed yes very very unsafe.
I wish they had explained the risk in using the pillow with bumpers around it for sleeping.

I think it is best to move the baby to the crib when they fall asleep. Because some tend to develop habits when they get used to the stuff that they sleep on or even to help them sleep. Reminds me of my friend who uses a net hammock and ended up her baby got used to that feeling and won't sleep without using it. Then there's also my niece who my brother need to drive around at night for her to fall asleep.
I used this everyday for both babies to nap in…. My kids loved it, I think because it kind of makes the baby feel held. There were no problems for me, but so sad that has happened to other families. 😢
Same, we never had an issues. But we didn’t leave them unattended or let them sleep in them all night-that’s what the bassinet for. It’s sad and heartbreaking that these little ones passed away 😢
I coslept with my baby but I also put a cosleeper in the middle of the bed and she was fine she's 12 now my daughter hated everything as a baby she only liked her lamb bouncer and me that's it.
The only time I’ve ever let an infant sleep in a Boppy was with twins I nannied. I would occasionally lay one in the Boppy right next to me, while I held the other, for them to catch a little nap.
People need to stop leaving there baby’s unsupervised. Honestly I used both of these and never left my kids alone. Sooo I have a feeling these baby’s where left alone for to long or ignored for to long.
it was probably done by sleep deprived parents or parents with babies with gerd syndrome like myself who needed to sleep a little bit during the night. It's already too sad what happened to them, I would dare to blame them.
My son has to sleep in a 40° angle or he projects his vomit even through his nose. Once he aspired it and turned blue. We were brought to the hospital by ambulance.

Lmao I have two babies , one it turning 2 the other is 3. Sleep doesn’t exist in a parents life for the first few years. Don’t blame it on the parent being tired give it up already. I sleep maybe 5 hours every night I fall asleep at like 4 in the morning and wake up at 830 to bring them to daycare by 9. If your that full of excuses don’t have kids if all you wanna do it sleeedeeppp. I’d love to sleep but being a parent a responsible parent is way more important then sleep. Sorry but I don’t agree with your opinion
@@Jjamess11011 I caught my son asfixiating because I was up at 4 am watching him, we take turns and never sleep when he does do to his extreme reflux. Yet I can understand that not everyone can do this and I can feel compassion for those poor parents who have lost their child and not blame them. Not everything is under our control, one can only try and luck (or its absence) plays an important factor in life
I read the recall and it states that the deaths occured "after the infant rolled on their stomach, to the side unrestrained or under other circumstances."
The recall was issued April 12, 2019 after 30 deaths. After the recall, 70 more deaths occured!
I feel as though parents left their kid(s) unattended for a long time. If you look at the dates of the increase in deaths, it would coincide with lockdowns. Parents probably had enough of being locked in with their own creation(s) and just left them there alone while the kid slept, twisted, turned or cried their lungs out.

My baby been sleeping between me and my fiancé for 6 months now. My baby is now 8 months old and doing perfect. He sleeps on his side, and his tummy. Whatever he wants. Bs making baby sleep on their own. Not normal

If you mean recently, I think the reasons they brought up about why it's dangerous was more for infants rather than 5 year old children (But I could be wrong). But if you meant when he was baby, then you're probably right. I'm glad your child is okay.
It’s the same position in a car seat kids sleep in those all the time. I think sometimes God forbid tragedy happens.

I Rolled up a towel under the mattress to help baby be elevated, it worked. He had reflux
I bought those 2 of those for my twin niece n nephew. Then I turned around a year or 2 later n bought one for my new niece.

Most humans in all of human history didn’t make it to 20 years, most died at 5 years or younger.
I commented about this above but so much of the risk we see with bed sharing actually comes from the type of beds we use. For example in the western world mattresses are soft and usually topped with memory foam, then they have heavy duvets / comforters and lots of pillows. This is what leads to bed sharing related deaths where as in many non western parts of the world beds are firm, even hard, made of boards, don’t have heavy thick blankets due to climate (too warm to need a thick duvet) and may not use pillows. Beds in the west tend to be high off the ground, but in non western countries we see beds often being on the floor. This factors into things like falling from the bed and becoming injured. Bed sharing isn’t evil, it’s bed sharing in your luxurious modern western style bed
I still don’t get what’s going on, I’ve used the rock n play since they came to market on all three of my kids, up until last year. If used correctly, I don’t understand the issue. My first two used to only sleep in the rock n play exclusively .I loved this thing. Never slept with my kids, and they always slept on their stomachs

Yes, I agree mostly companies the try to make life easier and innovate different gadgets for us, (parents).But it could be bad at the end.We have to spend time with our babies ,not like if I find time ,because I work ...but have. My little daughter is a baby and what I bought from fisher prise its only musical giraffe. And I think parents should be more responsible with their kids. Control them during their nap or at night. Check the position of head ,its simple things.And before buy smth for baby ,Parents have to make a research and certification of this products.

I think you mean alive in your first sentence? I'm glad your children are okay. They didn't mean that there was a 100% guarantee but that it was high risk.
The fact they are ok does not mean you did not risk them. The advices should be: try to avoid risks as much as possible. That does not mean we are perfect.
