I've recently had to do the same procedure to both license plate bulb lenses on my 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe. Ended up having to pick up a cobalt bit to drill the screw head off and then removing the rest of the screw with small needle nose vice grips. It took me 4 hours using regular HSS bits before I got frustrated and bought the cobalt bit, because at some point, the OEM screws were replaced with stainless #2 Robertson screws, which were stripped out also. Using a bit and hammer to tap it into the drilled hole would likely result in breaking the 3/8" plastic strip that the screw retainer (u-clip type) bites over top of. The Kia you're working on looks like the u-clip clamps over a piece much more secure/sturdy.

"Get it in the hole before starting to bang on it" - truer words were never spoken.
Great video. Helpful and entertaining. Breakfast with a shoe.
Vampliers have save my bacon on several occasions. The larger plier is fantastic. I keep a set in my carry bag and another in the main toolbox.
No, @ 3:17 it's "Get it in the hole there fella before you start *HAMMERING* on it" - More incorrect words were never written. If you're gonna use quotation marks then get the quote right FFS.
@@rawcado Sometimes "purists" are a bit of a bother.

@freddiejupiter442 As opposed to the sloppy, inaccurate "good enough" halfazzers that fix everything with booger welds and spray foam that are a PITA all the time.
It's not about 'purity', it's about ACCURACY and getting things right, which those people know nothing about which is why they use booger welds and spray foam. 🤣😂😆
@@rawcado Got that in one !
@@freddiejupiter442 Raw was right. If you are putting the words in quotation marks, it means the quote was exact. What's bothersome is those who don't know the difference.
best screw you had all week :-P
good job .
Do you have a selection box of stainless self tappers in the shop ?
I find standard head and flanged head super useful and can work in lot of scenarios like this ...
Thank you for addressing the lunacy over license plates on the internet. I once had someone attempt to threaten me by putting the license plate of one of my cars on Facebook. Look, dude, if you to put in the effort it's going to take to come find my house based on a license plate, you're going to feel awfully stupid when you get here and meet 230 grains of lead. God bless Texas. You keep up the good fight against rust and the green crusties, and I'll keep watching
I don't understand why car companies can't throw in a few stainless screws once in awhile. Least in places that are likely to need removing after a few years to replace a bulb. So annoying they can't think enough for such a simple thing.
That cracks me up when people are worried about the plates you see them all day every day
Post your license plate number.

😂 can't believe the cop wrote her for those lights being out...usually they just use those as an excuse to pull you over and check for DUI.. Must have been really bored, he gets home says yea baby got another one without license plate lights again today, making the world a better place 🤓

Cops notice car from Georgia because no front plate and nothing on the windshield & tinted windows 😂
Well as long as we are all going down memory lane, I must admit that I have started using Eric's one liner and that is "here's your problem lady!" I use that line on men mostly (95%) and they all give a chuckle. I usually say it pretty loud to have more effect, everyone within a fifty foot radius can hear it. And sometimes I give Eric the credit. I tell them some guy on SMA invented the phrase I also tell them he is a really good mechanic he uses computers to troubleshoot stuff. Good luck in the contest.
Eric did not invent that phrase, it goes way back. Matter of fact, those familiar with _Mythbusters_ will have heard it said way before SMAC was on UA-cam.
@@atticstatticoh man and I used to watch myth busters all the time, I especially like the water heater bomb. I'll need to fact check myself when giving Eric Oh Oh Oh credit for his one line zingers

And I'm not trying to give the _Mythbusters_ credit for coining it either. It predates them by quite a bit.

Is The Rusty Screw right next to The Krusty Krab?? 😂😂
You could name your bar “The Broken Drum” Because it can’t be beat.
Ya gotta love manufacturers. What would it cost to put stainless steel screws from the factory, maybe one cent per screw?
Tell the customer that you have to replace the whole hatch back.😂😂
He's not a dealership. 😂
@@stevewhite3424 No, the dealership would tell her to junk the car and buy a new one from them.
😂
Imagine you become a police officer so you can write a license plate ticket. You know he got his ass beat all through school
I have a Mazda 30 years old, and a Toyota 24 years old and both are fitted with stainless screws. They may be a little tired , but the tail and the plate lights are all easily changed. When I come to trade them I will keep those little screws....
My 03 Saturn L series has rusty license plate screws. Need to have this done.
Irwin Impact screw extractor set 1876224. Best thing for stripped screws ever.
You truly do live in the PRNY if people get tickets for that kind of petty crap.
I am sure there is no correlation between tickets written for license plate lights and the plate being out-of-state, right?
We used left hand drill bits for screws and bolts up to 3/8" never had any problems unless the threads were all rusted.
Harbor freight sells a cheap set of left hand drills, just another option.
Love your tips 👍👌
Amazing! The customer drove from Georgia to visit your shop.
Love the shorter videos
You cut out the part where you come back and Torque all the screws to factory spec 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I was just about to leave that comment 😂
What madness brought a Georgia gal into the DPRNY 🤔
How about an Easy Out? That's what most people would use.
The Rusty Screw isn’t that a bar on Sponge Bob? 🤣🤣
Hold up.. Cobb County Ga??? We don’t get rust down in this area.. lol. She’s a long way from home
Rust never sleeps...we here in the Carolina's have it made
Weirdo here that likes watching Eric work. A real professional, and freaking funny.
Ole GA rusty screw in NY. Who would have thought. Love the vampire pliers they are awesome. Another plier that comes in clutch for broken screws are Hi Lok collar removal pliers
Cobb county is a little northeast of me. Howdy ya'll! Don't fret, you're in good hands with Mr. O. He'll take care of you!
I’m surprised you did bring out the torch 😊
I had a lot of those rusty screws to fight. Luckily the boss was smart and bought a small box of stainless steel screws in this size which actually fits for almost all cars as far as I know. Rusty junk out, stainless steel in never had a problem only when the back door was like a swiss cheese 🧀 and then I had to glue it into the trash what was left over😂. The rest of the car is already gone but those screws aren't 😂😂😂
Love it! Really like those hollow needle nose. Do those reverse-thread, self tapping screw extractors not work well? They usuall come in 3 different size diameters.
Those pliers are the cat’s pajamas. However, if you don’t have them, needle nose vise grips are equally effective.
I've always thought the same about license plates. 😂 Never understood the paranoia.
Right? It’s not as if most people have access to the DMV database to look up somebody's license plate number, to get their name and address! LOL 😂🤪🤦🏻♀️
A decent cop would have said go get it fixed and left it at that. Why jam up a visitor to your state. Welcome to the People’s Republic of New York, just above the People’s Republic of New Jersey, both need a “tune up” as they say.
Keep up the great job Eric!
He might have pulled her over for something more serious, like speeding, then wrote her up for the taillight to be nice. Or he was going to let her go with a warning for the taillight, but she had a bad attitude.
What sort of Barney Fife’s do you have in the upstate PRNY that writes someone up for a broken license tag light?
With the bail reform it's about the only thing that sticks anymore haha
Thank you for being real. We, in the north, have all fought the rusted screw monsters
Snowbird got caught by the 5-0, eh?
