Every time I left for the full weekend during my sports tournaments when I was a kid my 200 lb Saint Bernard would take the trash can in the kitchen and dump it on my bed. She usually would also find a full gatorade bottle and chew it on my bed spilling it on my sheets. She would always come check on me if I was in my room too long but never went in there when I was there. Her demeanor would be very different if I was gone friday night- Sunday night for these tournaments. She wasn't ashamed of what she did but just would be very standoffish. Extremely intelligent dog, learned all the commands but piss her off and she'd target you if you spent too much time away from home.
I worked with Baboons, thank God I was the Alpha. They have ranks too. Alpha, etc.... We had a beautiful bond where I could sit down with them, feed alpha male 1st, 2nd, etc... I honestly believe people are mean, they hit, hurt all types of animals, mammals, etc... they will seek revenge. They have feelings too. My opinion.
My Orca Story When I was 7 on family holiday in Norway we went for a quick water drive. My life vest failed and I couldn’t swim. My parents didn’t notice I was going under. As I went under I could see 2 orcas swimming towards me. One of the orcas put its head under my back and took me directly to the boat. They continued to swim around the boat for about 10 minutes after I got on almost like they were checking to make sure I was ok. Orcas Rock!
Revenge not be quite the right word, but Animals totally get angry, and if the Orca pod's Queen has had a traumatic experience with Boats (Maybe a fishing net killed her Calf?) , she might well decide she just *really* doesnt like boats, and has decided to do something to try and get them out of her territory.
They should shoot these orcas, next time they will kill someone or just destroy a boat and people will drown if coast guard don't find them soon- now it's summer and people can stay long in the sea but in the winter time they are dead after half of hour from hypothermia

"Animals don't do revenge" seems like such a non-scientific thing to say. Big cats (or small) for instance, seem to 100% know what revenge is (I remember cases of tigers). And the more intelligent the animal the more bad things we seem to share with them.
My thoughts exactly. Not to mention how whales have proven to turn on owners in captivity....they were proven to stay at the scene and either die grieving over the kidnapping of their young (for seaworld) or refused to leave the area, searching for their young. They are INCREDIBLY SMART.

They're just playing! Yeah uh huh, I've also seen them nature documentaries where orcas hunt seals and throw them around like ragdolls. Hunting and playing seem connected with these animals and who knows, maybe they're not attacking for food but i wouldn't be shocked if it turns out they were just messing with them. Like "pssst, hey bill, watch me rip the steering fin off this thing. I'm even gonna rub it in their faces!"
This is the same species that tosses seals around before eating them. This is playful behavior, just because its scary to us doesn’t mean they aren’t having a hell of a time.
I read something once that said something along the lines of: Orcas warn each other about things like whaling ships. Within a year there was a 50% drop in whaling deaths. Not because the whalers became more unskilled in that time- but because the orcas were warning their pods and other pods of the dangers. They are incredibly intelligent, even having unique names that they answer to and call each other. I don’t doubt that some of them are fed up with their treatment. Whether it be whaling, disturbing their hunting grounds, disturbing breeding grounds/young- they have every right to be upset.
We're animals ourselves, homo sapiens, family Great Apes. It's not hard to understand my Orcas, they think like us. If you have ships constantly disturbing your sleep, and they're stealing the fish from your waters, what would you do? I'd take out those ships.

I've never heard of orcas being a target of whalers. They typically went after whales. If young orcas are crazy enough to think it's fun to swim around with dead salmon on their heads, snatching rudders isn't that big a jump. Human teenagers re destructive too. Blast attacking orcas with high-volume sound at the right frequency using a hydrophone and I predict they'll leave pretty quickly.
I'm reading very sad comments from people who don't know anything about these creatures, i.e. "they aren't called killer whales for no reason", or even "we need to capture and examine them". These creatures, people, have proven to be very smart, they have their own language, dialect, family, culture even. Like other sea mammals they also have something most humans lack these days, empathy. People have been hunting them, killing or catching their children for the sole purpose of human entertainment. It is obvious they will retaliate, as humans would. Start having more respect for other species, instead of thinking we can take what we want from nature without consequences.

Orcas are highly intelligent and somewhat tolerant of us. I suspect someone messed around and a Orca got harmed. They learn quickly and pass it on which is why it seems to be a local experience and not worldwide, but give it time and maybe more in a larger area can be "taught" to go after more boats. I hope I'm wrong but we need to back off for awhile.

Trauma induced by a boat is a very likely factor, if they wanted to harm the humans they would have done just that because they are some of the most powerful animals within the ocean, capable of flipping ice bergs very smart and work together but so far that has not happened. But as the man states, they could be playing, if it has turned into a game for them they will continue. Whatever happens, hopefully they will come out with a deterrent to avoid any incidents. The whales should not be harmed.
Orca's are the top predator of the ocean. They are at the very top of the food chain. Every animal in the oceans fear them. They eat whatever they want. If you're in their territory and want to eat you they will.

It may have something to do with food, as bluefin tuna are bred in that area and are one of their main foods. I know someone who used to fish for small tuna in the Strait of Gibraltar for sport. He often caught only the heads, as the killer whales take advantage of this to eat the body of the fish when it is attached to the hook.

It seems so obvious to me this area where their attacking is now breeding ground or mating ground. Do you think playing with a piñata is being aggressive? You're looking at it from the human perspective rather than from their perspective. You see it as aggressive because they're damaging boats, but those boats are inanimate objects. It's really no more aggressive than if we were to kick a can down the street and dent it by doing so. They're not harming the humans, even when the humans end up in the water.
Orcas have been known to attack whales much larger than them and seemingly harass them for no apparent reason. Scientist at first believed they were hunting, however after further studies the orcas showed no interest in actually eating the whales. Orcas have also been known to attack and torture seals, thrashing them around like toys and end up not eating them. Scientists are still unsure why they do this, but ultimately they’ve come to the conclusion that… “It’s fun.” Orcas are very intelligent and harassing and killing other creatures for pleasure is not uncommon in highly intelligent animals. They also might be using the boats to teach their young ones how to hunt by using the boat as some sort of learning tool representing a large animal. These are just theories however and there’s no way to know for certain why they’re doing this.
I think they have learned not to be afraid of boats anymore because they aren't hunted anymore. They are animals which are all more confident in packs or pods and they probably have learned it's ok to play with boats over there. We have strict rules here in the Washington state when it comes to boating around whales but I'd imagine people in other countries don't care so much about being considerate of these incredibly smart mammals when they're cruising through and not stopping for the whales to try not hurt them and not throwing out garbage or making noises they don't like or messing with them. Fishing around them even isn't a good idea because they will follow you and wait for you to catch a fish so they can eat it and if you don't feed them like maybe someone else does they might get upset.
Ok, if Tigers can seek revenge, Orcas definitely can. I realise you love them and are an advocate, but they are intelligent predators and are fully capable of warding off things they see as threats.

At the real risk of being very unpopular and raising an issue that might cause some to reflect differently, it is Possibly in response to over fishing, or like they said a reaction to a collision with a matriarch... but i think its more likely a calf got struck by a rudder..... so the pods are making the boats safer for the calves....... If it continues carbon fibre reinforced sterns are going to become a must on fibreglass boats.

Orcas swim around the entire planet. Those creatures are smart. Why they attack boats? Because they have seen what some boats can do, they shoot and kill wales alle the time.
That footage they showed didn't look much like an attack. But if they are maybe they're smart enough to know we are responsible for drift netting huge numbers of life forms out of the oceans, and may even understand we are increasing its acidity with CO2 & increasing the waters temperature. The whale must have been pretty pissed! Maybe it witnessed one of its own being killed by man! They’re very intelligent, and I read when Europeans were discovering new islands and continents (Australia) to be specific , orca’s were repeatedly said to have aided and saved many seafarers lives from drowning,by bringing them to the beach, keeping them above water as if they knew humans can’t breathe under water?. I offer another opinion, it's nothing about revenge, or personal orca issues. As it appears only the rudder's are broken off. Why is this? And are all vessels attacked? My theory is this, that is most sailboat rudder shafts, the tube that goes up into the boat to which the rudder is connected to, is loose in the shaft log housing. This allows a vibration or resonance to occur due to loose rudder shaft, and or out-of-balance rudder with fairing issues setting up a vibration in the water. It is this vibration the Orcas take exception too. Why else would they only break off the rudder and not attack the keel, or the hull itself? It's the vibration of the rudder passing though the water which is annoying them. Note, most sailboats do not have bulkheads to prevent water from getting into the vessel interior once the shaft log is breached, cracked or broken in the case of oraces bumping, smashing and crashing into the rudder itself. Additionally, most sailboats do not have adequate bilge pumps to handle high water flow other that an small leak, hence they sink in deep water.
Interesting theory. If the vibrations emanating from the rudder is the issue, then I wonder why orcas have only just started these attacks recently. They weren't engaged in this sort of activity (attacking rudders) in the past. Additionally, it is only the orcas off the coast of Spain that are doing this. Orcas in other oceans around the world are not targeting rudders.

Orcas have been playing with boats for as long as boats have been around orcas. This isn't a new behavior, it is simply an increase in behavior. Maybe they've turned it into some sort of competition.
During situations like this we shouldn't have to figure our what the motive is. If a wild creature attacks, protect yourself and your property. If they are smart they will quickly learn nit to attack boats.

Orcas are very aggressive creatures.I have read books about Arctic explorers in the mid 1800s encountering them while out on the ice. The explorers said that the orcas were intent upon knocking them off the ice floes, ramming the ice repeatedly, in an effort to dislodge the ice or the men.
My Mi'kmaq ancestors told of "bad fish" that would attack their birch bark canoes. To trick them, they started carrying large branches to create shade so they wouldn't get too close, for fear of breaching themselves, thinking it was land. The Indians never called them killer wales, they called them whale killers. The colonialists misunderstood.

There is _one_ documented case of an orca ramming and ice flow that an explorer _and his dog_ were on. There is no evidence that the orca was being aggressive towards the human. There has only ever been one documented incident of an orca in the wild attacking a human - a surfer who was bitten. Even when they damage and sink boats, they do absolutely no harm to the humans who end up in the water.

I guarantee you it's a revenge for hitting the mother orca. There are extremely intelligent animal, with one used to help whalers pull whales into the bay. I say graze one of these orcas with a bullet the next time they try to ram a boat to draw some blood, and hope that the blood will scare them away like the sharks.

It's not so easy 'cause you need to cross the Strait of Gibraltar in order to enter or exit the Mediterranean Sea. Many boats have to pass that part of the sea.

An orca probably got hurt by a propeller or struck by a boat, so that pod started destroying boats. Boats have been around for over 2 thousand years. Only now this is happening. Something happened that triggered this. Either that or the matriarch of that pod is crazy.

I know there are steel and wooden ships still I never said there wasnt. Also steel isn't exclusive to "war ships" so im not sure why you included that "war ships" part. You mentioned boats have been around for 2000 years (actually alot longer than that but ok). Fiberglass has only been used in boats since around the 1940s-50s so it's not surprising they're now able to sink vessels that otherwise would've been constructed from much stronger materials. Regardless it's not like we have a historical database that has an accurate recollection of every interaction between orcas and boats for the last 2000 years so sort of a nonsense question to begin with.

Yeah uh huh, I've also seen them nature documentaries where orcas hunt seals and throw them around like ragdolls. Hunting and playing seem connected with these animals and who knows, maybe they're not attacking for food but i wouldn't be shocked if it turns out they were just messing with them.

I've never heard of orcas being a target of whalers. They typically went after whales. If young orcas are crazy enough to think it's fun to swim around with dead salmon on their heads, snatching rudders isn't that big a jump. Human teenagers re destructive too. Blast attacking orcas with high-volume sound at the right frequency using a hydrophone and I predict they'll leave pretty quickly.

I'm reading very sad comments from people who don't know anything about these creatures, i.e. "they aren't called killer whales for no reason", or even "we need to capture and examine them". These creatures, people, have proven to be very smart, they have their own language, dialect, family, culture even. Like other sea mammals they also have something most humans lack these days, empathy. People have been hunting them, killing or catching their children for the sole purpose of human entertainment. It is obvious they will retaliate, as humans would. Start having more respect for other species, instead of thinking we can take what we want from nature without consequences.

Orcas are highly intelligent and somewhat tolerant of us. I suspect someone messed around and a Orca got harmed. They learn quickly and pass it on which is why it seems to be a local experience and not worldwide, but give it time and maybe more in a larger area can be "taught" to go after more boats. I hope I'm wrong but we need to back off for awhile.

Trauma induced by a boat is a very likely factor, if they wanted to harm the humans they would have done just that because they are some of the most powerful animals within the ocean, capable of flipping ice bergs very smart and work together but so far that has not happened. It may have something to do with food, as bluefin tuna are bred in that area and are one of their main foods. I know someone who used to fish for small tuna in the Strait of Gibraltar for sport. He often caught only the heads, as the killer whales take advantage of this to eat the body of the fish when it is attached to the hook.

It seems so obvious to me this area where their attacking is now breeding ground or mating ground. Any animal from horses, bulls, moose, bears, hawks, all animals will defend its perceived territory that is being encroached upon. Can’t believe Marine Biologist actually said it was play. I’ve been in the NZ coast and have seen pods approach kayakers with no aggression. This is aggressive behavior to ward off.

You're looking at it from the human perspective rather than from their perspective. You see it as aggressive because they're damaging boats, but those boats are inanimate objects. It's really no more aggressive than if we were to kick a can down the street and dent it by doing so.
They're not harming the humans, even when the humans end up in the water.
Orcas have been known to attack whales much larger than them and seemingly harass them for no apparent reason. Scientist at first believed they were hunting, however after further studies the orcas showed no interest in actually eating the whales. Orcas have also been known to attack and torture seals, thrashing them around like toys and end up not eating them. Scientists are still unsure why they do this, but ultimately they’ve come to the conclusion that… “It’s fun.” Orcas are very intelligent and harassing and killing other creatures for pleasure is not uncommon in highly intelligent animals. They also might be using the boats to teach their young ones how to hunt by using the boat as some sort of learning tool representing a large animal. These are just theories however and there’s no way to know for certain why they’re doing this.
I think they have learned not to be afraid of boats anymore because they aren't hunted anymore. They are animals which are all more confident in packs or pods and they probably have learned it's ok to play with boats over there. We have strict rules here in the Washington state when it comes to boating around whales but I'd imagine people in other countries don't care so much about being considerate of these incredibly smart mammals when they're cruising through and not stopping for the whales to try not hurt them and not throwing out garbage or making noises they don't like or messing with them. Fishing around them even isn't a good idea because they will follow you and wait for you to catch a fish so they can eat it and if you don't feed them like maybe someone else does they might get upset.
That got boring really quickly.

Orcas swim around the entire planet. Those creatures are smart. Why they attack boats? Because they have seen what some boats can do, they shoot and kill wales alle the time.
That footage they showed didn't look much like an attack. But if they are maybe they're smart enough to know we are responsible for drift netting huge numbers of life forms out of the oceans, and may even understand we are increasing its acidity with CO2 & increasing the waters temperature. Wouldn't that be interesting, the first animal to give people feedback for abusing the planet.

I offer another opinion, it's nothing about revenge, or personal orca issues. As it appears only the rudder's are broken off. Why is this? And are all vessels attacked? My theory is this, that is most sailboat rudder shafts, the tube that goes up into the boat to which the rudder is connected to, is loose in the shaft log housing. This allows a vibration or resonance to occur due to loose rudder shaft, and or out-of-balance rudder with fairing issues setting up a vibration in the water. It is this vibration the Orcas take exception too. Why else would they only break off the rudder and not attack the keel, or the hull itself? It's the vibration of the rudder passing though the water which is annoying them. Note, most sailboats do not have bulkheads to prevent water from getting into the vessel interior once the shaft log is breached, cracked or broken in the case of oraces bumping, smashing and crashing into the rudder itself. Additionally, most sailboats do not have adequate bilge pumps to handle high water flow other that an small leak, hence they sink in deep water.
Interesting theory. If the vibrations emanating from the rudder is the issue, then I wonder why orcas have only just started these attacks recently. They weren't engaged in this sort of activity (attacking rudders) in the past. Additionally, it is only the orcas off the coast of Spain that are doing this. Orcas in other oceans around the world are not targeting rudders.

Orcas have been playing with boats for as long as boats have been around orcas. This isn't a new behavior, it is simply an increase in behavior.
Maybe they've turned it into some sort of competition.
During situations like this we shouldn't have to figure our what the motive is. If a wild creature attacks, protect yourself and your property. If they are smart they will quickly learn nit to attack boats.

Orcas are very aggressive creatures.I have read books about Arctic explorers in the mid 1800s encountering them while out on the ice. The explorers said that the orcas were intent upon knocking them off the ice floes, ramming the ice repeatedly, in an effort to dislodge the ice or the men.
My Mi'kmaq ancestors told of "bad fish" that would attack their birch bark canoes. To trick them, they started carrying large branches to create shade so they wouldn't get too close, for fear of breaching themselves, thinking it was land. Me and my pals few years ago caught a two meter blue shark while we were fishing and we managed although we were in danger that he bite off our hands , we managed to release him.

An orca probably got hurt by a propeller or struck by a boat, so that pod started destroying boats. Boats have been around for over 2 thousand years. Only now this is happening. Something happened that triggered this. Either that or the matriarch of that pod is crazy.
Boats are made of cheap fiberglass now. They used to be made of thick strong wood and steel
@@robbarber7253 that changes nothing and explains nothing on why orcas are attacking them. There are still wooden ships today and steel warships, but that doesn't answer why orcas are now attacking them.
@@one4all885 The point must've went over your head. An orca isn't going to be able to destroy a large wooden or steel ship like it could do to a fiberglass one since it's a much weaker material... I know there are steel and wooden ships still I never said there wasnt. Also steel isn't exclusive to "war ships" so im not sure why you included that "war ships" part. You mentioned boats have been around for 2000 years (actually alot longer than that but ok). Fiberglass has only been used in boats since around the 1940s-50s so it's not surprising they're now able to sink vessels that otherwise would've been constructed from much stronger materials. Regardless it's not like we have a historical database that has an accurate recollection of every interaction between orcas and boats for the last 2000 years so sort of a nonsense question to begin with.
@@robbarber7253 that still answers nothing. Fiberglass has been around for a long time, but only now orcas are attacking boats. Orcas have not attacked ships or boats in the past. No records of it and people would have been able to live to tell the story since their ships were tougher.
@@one4all885 Actually it does since you were originally questioning how boats hadnt been attacked in 2000 years and I pretty much dismanted that entirely. since you're absolutely wrong and there are more accounts of orcas attacking boats than only in the last few years. The point of my original comment was more so in response to you ranting about boats not getting attacked for the last "2000 years" when you decided boats started being used and how they do alot more damage now since boats are mostly fiberglass.

One orca, Gladys, got mad. She attacked a boat, found it was effective, started teaching others in the pod. Now it's a gang of vandals trashing boats. You'd think the whole "we can sink your boat, easy" along with "we can swim all day long, can you?" would convince people that some things aren't to be ignored, but people do stupid stuff all the time.

You went overboard like a child throwing tantrums. Lets look at it clearly if you dont mind.
How about we stop over fishing the waters, stop polluting their homes, stop capturing them and keeping them secluded in small tanks for our entertainment. How could we still try to blame them as if they're at fault. These are living creatures not robots that take orders on command.
To assume only humans have a capacity to think is incredibly shortsighted. These are warnings, not some sort of joke. Easy for us to "enjoy life" and ignore how we're destroying their lives.

Orca would lose 1 vs 1 against a sperm whale. Sperm whales can generate clicks with over 200 decibels. Imagine being roasted internally by sound waves. 200 decibels is similar to an atomic bomb exploding just so you have an idea.
Yeah I find that a funny statement since they definitely get frustrated and will kill humans when they’re in captivity.

They are brilliant creatures… they teach their young . They pass down knowledge. They are smart AF.. someone did something to them with a boat. And yes they do revenge.. it’s ignorant af for that man to say they don’t do revenge. Have you seen them hunt? When a seal hides on a block of ice they make waves to flip it over. They turn sharks upside down to immobilize them and take what they want . I have always said they are the true rulers of the sea. That’s not playing. It’s a message. Idk what ppl did. Harass them, hunt them or just hurt them somehow. Either way, words out. They communicate like lionesses when they hunt. W.e keep sleeping on them..
