Muscle memory with the pedaling itself, being able to quickly check the gauges, and then a ridiculous amount of upkeep with keeping the gauges accurate, and then just practice obviously. The timpanists in DCI, WGI, and some high schools with complicated timpani parts are constantly adjusting the gauges to keep them accurate. It's the only way to consistently make the changes as fast as they need to do it. When I was at a show last summer I went to get a drink from concessions while the Cadets were waiting to enter the field, and I was gone from the stands for like 10 minutes. When walked by the Cadets timpanist to leave the stands he was checking his gauges, and then when I walked by again 10 minutes later, he was still checking and adjusting his gauges.
When I played timpani in high school a lot of it was by feel. Your tuning and muting and checking of gauges just becomes another part of your performance. The biggest thing was making sure my gauges were accurate because as the temperature and humidity change, so do the timpani, so you have to adjust your gauges and make sure you’re in tune. It’s not easy but timpani can add a lot to a front ensemble
Imagine your timpani composer just throwing 2 octaves worth of notes at you at 190 bpm and expecting you to change pitches like every single measure. 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️😭😭😭😭 like man if you hate me, just say that.
LAS3R_PARADOX just because idk lol like I’m my high school in the next marching season we’re doing a show with no timpani part and a guy from pit asked if there could be a timpani part written just like this season I thought there was a timpani part in the original I guess not lol
It can definitely fill in a lot of the bass voice in the ensemble, to help strengthen the tuba sound for example. It’s also been part of drum corps for a long time (they used to be marched!). I really enjoy playing timpani, it’s a lot of fun!
