  • The Redline Traverse is an elusive ski tour along the crest of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. In May of 2023 Jenna Kane and Greg Cunningham added their names to a short list of Redliners, exactly 40 years after the route was established by Tom Carter, Allan Bard and Chris Cox. The film tells the story of the Redline and those who seek to follow it.

    In 2019, myself and 2 friends (There was a badass woman in our crew, too) attempted a red line. We set off from Whitney Portal and ended up making it to Rock Creek. We had almost perfect snow conditions the entire time. Ironically, we attempted this as an on-sight, never having skied in the range, and it was gear failures unforeseen health problems that stopped us, not inexperience in the range. It was one hell of an adventure, even if we didn't make it to Mammoth.
    A highlight of our trip was the local legend we befriended along the way who helped us out in more ways than one, when it really counted. The things you can't plan on and the people we met really made the trip. I am grateful to have "failed", for where it lead us and who we got to connect with.
    In '23 I went back, and went south from Mammoth, trying to get back to Rock Creek to finish the link up. Another sick partner changed the plans and we exited McGee.
    Alas, I've got a tiny sliver left above the headwaters of Mono, but will finish it, maybe this year. Additionally I'd like to start further south and finish North of Mammoth someday, for an extended version.
    Thank you for talking about the redline as a concept and not an exact route. It may be semantics but really there is no THE Red Line Traverse, just an idea with no real turn by turn directions. I admire everyone's creativity and love how many lines you incorporated.
    Also, thanks for sharing your trip, as it helps me remember mine. We also had a magnificent Humphreys sunset. To be honest, I was worried that I wouldn't like your video, or I would feel that you would misrepresent something, but I really enjoyed it and don't disagree with much of anything.
    Only things I'd say is I can't believe you only did a pound of food per day, we aimed for 2lb. Also, and maybe this is just a Washington thing, but holy hell the sun is INTENSE down there and I'll never get used to how horribly fried you can get, SO fast. Immensely more intense than any spring skiing I've ever done in the 48.
    Lastly, I really resonate with the ending message about letting ourselves be creative! Let's inspire and not prescribe. Discovery in lieu of beta saturation! Our old timer let us discover it for ourselves!
    I would love to meet y'all and share a beer. Thanks for sharing, thanks for paying homage to those before you, and congratulations on the film.

    While the Sierra High Route doesn't compare to your epic traverse, this film brought back memories of doing the High Route with Alan Plaugher back in the early 80's on skinny xc skis with three pin bindings without climbing skins and with leather ski boots. Thanks for the memories and congratulations to both of you!

      Hey there, Jenna and Greg took Go pros with them on their trip to film the hiking and skiing. As for the interviews, not sure. That is a question for the Director Steve Seime

    • @stevefromseb
      @stevefromseb 5 місяців тому +2

      The interviews were filmed on a Blackmagic Pocket Pro and Canon 5d Markii. Along with the GoPros, Jenna and Greg filmed with their iPhones. I think that if you have a good story, it doesn’t matter what camera you use, I hope this movie is proof of that!
