Always loved the nuances of the Pumpkins live performances...they weren't content to be jukeboxes and play songs exactly like their records live....many of their performances are raw and on the edge of their sleeves.
I remember reading in magazines that Pumpkins were the nineties' Pink Floyd. This song is a perfect showcase on why people perceived them that way. They never were about short punk anthems like Nirvana, they were a prog rock band.
The Siamese Dream tone is largely responsible for me switching from 6string to bass. I’m not a bad guitar player but bass sort of feels like home, you know? Chamberlain, for me, is one of the top 5 drummers of all time.
this is one of my favorite songs from the mellon collie cd. sp is one of my fav bands, even though they've gone downhill fast-still love their older stuff. amazing group!
agreed best original pumpkins song ever, when james Iha and D'arcy we're booted from the band. Corgan wanted to take things his own way..... Look where that got him...... No fucker cares for anything after Adore. Its no wonder james iha turned to maynard james keenan, because all his work is class...... FUCK YOU CORGAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i've literally had 7:06 onwards on reapeat for the last few days. That guitar solo/free style is so incredible. I think it is even superior to the recorded version of the song. The emotion is so raw - it sounds like Billy's guitar is dying
I had the disctinct pleasure of seeing these guys during the MCIS tour and they kicked ass. This is such a lovely song, one of my favorites from this album.
I saw them on the Mellon Collie tour in early 1997 - I remember during the final minutes of Porcelina (they played a longer version) Corgan and Iha both had their backs to the crowd. Unlike the reverse-hand he did in the video, he was turned around in front of one of the huge speakers working the feedback like a surgeon. In his latex longcoat it was a bit surreal. I have never seen so many people so quiet in awe during a concert than at that moment. It was pretty close to spiritual.
I worked in a music store when this came out, wow what a time it was, so many bands both in Australia and US, Europe were at their best. I could name a few, but my hand s will get sore typing.
how did Billy and/nor James Iha get left off the Rolling Stone list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time?! My jaw drops when I hear some of their stuff, and it falls rtight on the floor when I SEE them do it, ilke here.
i totatlly agree, i only got into them the past few years, iheard 1979 in mtv and loved it and started listening to all their stuff. i recongise some songs from when i was a kid like 'tonight'. they deffo dont get enough credit, alot of people havnt heard of them
As far as you take me, that's where I believe, the realm of soft delusions are floating on the leaves. On a distant shoreline she waves her arm to me... etc wow brilliant lyrics, music as well
alot of people dont know how good jimmy chamberlain is on the drums, this song would not be any good without his techniques , how he transfers from the slow parts to the fast and fills is amazing.
you have good point Tskbludemons on jimmy drumming techniques, the different drum sticks he uses, its the begining of the song has that mystical feeling then BAM! the drums explodes, then return back to be solem again notice 7:12 and 8:06 are sheer great of jimmy' talents
@fletcheyboi I agree. Billy even made mention of this in one of the recent editions of Rolling Stone where he stated that he deserved more credit than he got for his work. Even those who hate the Pumpkins have to admit that their music is quite impressive in it's complexity and uniqueness.
There seem to be several live videos on youtube from this concert.. Does anyone know where I could possibly get a DVD.. I saw these guys in 96 before "the overdose" and I will never forget it.. Cold Sunday night in November.
went to V festival on Gold Coast. had to leave after 'united states' to catch a lift back to where i was stating. wish i saw them play this song!!! ohh well, was still a fantastic performance of what i did see!
@fletcheyboi I completely agree; Billy even said something similar in one of this year's editions of Rolling Stone. Some people talk-down about SP's major hits but fail to look at Billy's/SP's massive body of work besides those hits. Porcelina is an amazing and genius song as are a lot of the non-singles.
Dude 1992-1997 were the best years of music. The years where every popular band at the time had a completely different sound than the others. The Pumpkins. Tool. Nirvana. Pearl Jam. Hole. Jamiroquai. The Cure. Radiohead. Even fucking Snoop Dogg was awesome back then.
Always loved the nuances of the Pumpkins live performances...they weren't content to be jukeboxes and play songs exactly like their records live....many of their performances are raw and on the edge of their sleeves.
I always wear earplugs at shows because I'm saving my earginity for the OG Pumpkins to just DESTROY.
This is my 2nd favorite pumpkins song...right behind "Thru the eyes of ruby"
I remember reading in magazines that Pumpkins were the nineties' Pink Floyd. This song is a perfect showcase on why people perceived them that way. They never were about short punk anthems like Nirvana, they were a prog rock band.
It just gets better and better! This is what a proper live band sound like! Jimmy Chamberlain is the reason I play the drums
The Siamese Dream tone is largely responsible for me switching from 6string to bass. I’m not a bad guitar player but bass sort of feels like home, you know?
Chamberlain, for me, is one of the top 5 drummers of all time.
God, this is just such an incredible song. Corgan is the master songwriter, and they perform this one amazingly.
Underrated. The outro inspires
That outro solo is special
Smashing pumpkins sounds were very diverse , it can be soft, hard rock sounds and some heavy metal, one of my favorite bands.
I got all teary-eyed when they played Porcelina as their first song in Jan 08.
_\,,/
Saw them twice on the Melancholy tour and this song still gives me goosebumps
this is the most beautiful thing ive ever heard. my mind is blown holy shit
This album is such a fucking masterpiece!!!! It brings back nostalgia of my teens , back when I didn’t hate life so much haha
This is definitely my all time favorite live Pumpkins vid. Just never gets old.
to all those kids who listen to pop- this is MUSIC, listen to it once in a while.........simply stunning
this is one of my favorite songs from the mellon collie cd. sp is one of my fav bands, even though they've gone downhill fast-still love their older stuff. amazing group!
Im am speechless ive never heard this song but i though it was gonna be instrumental its amazing!!
My spine tingles, Music doesn't get any better than this!
this song is almost perfect... the studio version is so amazing
Billy Corgan is so bloody talented...thank god for him and his music he has given us
I love you pumpkins! My favorite band and one of my favorite songs. Thank you Billy, D'arcy, James, and Jimmy! You have saved my life.
This song made me fall in love with lengthy fade-ins.
The outro of this is, is absolutely incredible.
Best Pumpkins song ever!!
+cafeledavid no thru the eyes of Ruby hummer and here is no why thx
agreed best original pumpkins song ever, when james Iha and D'arcy we're booted from the band. Corgan wanted to take things his own way.....
Look where that got him......
No fucker cares for anything after Adore. Its no wonder james iha turned to maynard james keenan, because all his work is class......
FUCK YOU CORGAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
KentBrockman24 they left they weren't kicked...
Right up there with Thru the Eyes of Ruby!
they opened their show with this in Belfast kings hall last night. it blew me away!!!!never have i appreciated it so much!!
Been listening to Mellon Collie again lately after about 10 years. Its a fucking sick album, should be in the top 100 ever recorded. Underrated.
this song...this whole album, danm! made life better :) peace everybody!!!
Nothing Better than the "ORIGINAL SP" and in their PRIME must of been awesome to see them back then damn... SP ROCKS!!!
absolutely love this song
i've literally had 7:06 onwards on reapeat for the last few days. That guitar solo/free style is so incredible. I think it is even superior to the recorded version of the song. The emotion is so raw - it sounds like Billy's guitar is dying
Saw them play this live in '96 (with Filter joining them onstage).Best live performance EVER!!!
This is what I love about music.
I had the disctinct pleasure of seeing these guys during the MCIS tour and they kicked ass. This is such a lovely song, one of my favorites from this album.
This is my fav band of the 90's I hope they still can make music like this for many years to come
Agree to that, for me this song is now one of my top 5 SP songs after hearing it live Feb 29 2008!!!
Gets better every time you hear it.
my fav pumpkins live performance ever
I saw them on the Mellon Collie tour in early 1997 - I remember during the final minutes of Porcelina (they played a longer version) Corgan and Iha both had their backs to the crowd. I have never seen so many people so quiet in awe during a concert than at that moment. It was pretty close to spiritual.
Chicago? I saw them then too for thos tour. I was in 6th grade lol
BTW - Playing that solo at the end is one of the most satisfying things any guitarist (who happens to be a SP-fanboy) can do.
I worked in a music store when this came out, wow what a time it was, so many bands both in Australia and US, Europe were at their best. I could name a few, but my hand s will get sore typing.
yea best band ever playing music from the greatest album ever during their best time ever
I pressed the ''like'' button the second they started playing.
wow Iv been looking for a live version of this I saw
smashing pumpkins way back in 96, very kick ass concert!
I was in that Show. A small Festival with other great Bands like Sonic Youth, back in 1996 i think it was.
AWESOME! :)
My favourite song of smashing.
how did Billy and/nor James Iha get left off the Rolling Stone list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time?! My jaw drops when I hear some of their stuff, and it falls rtight on the floor when I SEE them do it, ilke here.
Late to answer this but as much as a fan I still am, neither billy or James were worthy. They’re good guitarists but not mind blowing
i totatlly agree, i only got into them the past few years, iheard 1979 in mtv and loved it and started listening to all their stuff. i recongise some songs from when i was a kid like 'tonight'. they deffo dont get enough credit, alot of people havnt heard of them
It was also the opener in de Brabanthallen in Den Bosch, must've been the same tour...
It kicked ass
fooking Epic....I saw this tour and it was unforgettable....Always and forever a Pumpkins fan!
As far as you take me, that's where I believe, the realm of soft delusions are floating on the leaves. On a distant shoreline she waves her arm to me... etc wow brilliant lyrics, music as well
I love moments like that.
THIS IS GLORIOUS!!!!
seriously amazing composition in this song
I think this song is a perfect opening song, it starts out slow and gradually gets heavy.
You really appreaciate this song more after u hear it live
it´s epic - what a wonderful music. one of Billy´s exorbitant songs!
i love it...
This performance is perfect

Mes 17 ans aussi … dans cette chanson …
James Iha an amazing guitarist
i am also proud of being born in the nineties but it makesm me sad that i dint have the chance to see them live with the original ban
i miss darcy
La sentirò stasera dal vivo non ci posso credere!!!!
alot of people dont know how good jimmy chamberlain is on the drums, this song would not be any good without his techniques , how he transfers from the slow parts to the fast and fills is amazing.

As far as you take me, that's where I believe...

1979 too.
BILLY IS A FUCKING GENIUS!!
the best poet in the universe
