    I am a full time Linux user but I also owned Apple products in the past. I get what you are saying. However you can't deny that the integration of Apple products is top notch. We can replicate most of the functionality in Linux as you show in the video but it will never be as seamless and easy as using Apple devices. We can install server/client software that does some of the things. We can connect and configure devices to work in a certain way. And that's great for us Linux users. We like tinkering and we are technical. However Apple products do that out of the box without any configuration. And that is why people keep raving about it. Even someone who knows nothing about computers can get these features. You have an Apple watch you can unlock your Apple devices without doing anything else. You phone is connected to your computer without setting it up or installing software. Your airpods are ready to work just by proximity to your Apple device. You share files, clipboard, without the need of mounting filesystems, permissions or installing any additional software. Of course for this "convenience" you need to pay absurd amounts of money to buy Apple devices and be locked in their walled garden. This is unacceptable for us. The average non technical user does not care!

      This can be done on linux if someone had the ability to write a gui/program that will allow you to do the same thing just as easily (since most of the backend is already there). Like usual Linux relies on terminal and memorizing commands to do it. If I knew how to code I'd make this myself

    • @TheJackiMonster
      @TheJackiMonster Рік тому +30

      You are actually wrong about the "without setting it up" phrase. You do need to connect all those devices via your Apple ID because all of this convenient and automatic setup is done by services connecting via your ID and Apples servers. With Linux there are no centralized servers in most cases, you could use. However it would be technically possible to connect all your devices via a UI application which only requires similar input from the user.
      It's not like Apple is doing anything ground breaking here. They just setup your systems for you while keeping pretty much full control over it.
      People thinking you pay with only your money in this case are wrong as well. Apple heavily controls how you can use your devices and they do apply limitations in many cases.
      On Linux you have full control over it. The setup might be a bit more technical today but it could be equal tomorrow. However you wouldn't loose any control over your system. There's really no need to buy such features from Apple. Just buy some FOSS developers a coffee. Might get you way further...

    • @dragonballjiujitsu
      @dragonballjiujitsu Рік тому +11

      @@TheJackiMonster You would be signing in with your apple ID anyway. Its not like sitting down and fiddling with multiple apps and complex terminal hacks just to get some basic functionality.
      I never said that Apple was doing anything ground breaking. Google basically does the same things as well as others. They just doing it well and smoothly.
      Of course your data is on Apple servers. Same with Google or any other non-self hosted cloud service. If you are put off by that then don't use it. I personally don't have anything in my apple notes that would get me arrested. If I used these cloud services for something questionable I might think different about it. I do think its funny that all these people talking about their "privacy" all have google accounts and carry around a government tracking device at all times...lol
      Most people do not have the time, the inclination or the know how to set up their own cloud and tinker with all their gadgets to get the wish version of what Apple provides out of the box.

    Lots of people say Apple is more expensive because they're already setting up your devices (although locking you in to their ecosystem and infrastructure) and because of that it "just works". Maybe that was a thing in the past, but I've had nothing but problems with most recent Apple integrations.
    I helped a friend switch from a 2012 MBP to a 2021 M1 MBA (carrying over around 100 GB worth of files). Their migration assistant failed 4 times and for each failed attempt I had to format the drive on a brand new M1 MBA since migration assistant created a new partition for the migration and failed to delete it if the process did not finish gracefully. The drive would get to 100% and the M1 would get so slow it would take over an hour to boot up before I could even attempt to clear out the drive.
    After all these failed attempts I decided to setup SSH (built in to MacBooks, took about 5 minutes to configure) and manually transferred the files from one Mac to the other using scp and rsync. Worked like a charm, no data corruption, no infinite progress bar with inaccurate ETA, it "just works".
    Apple's ecosystem and integrations are cool when they work, but when they don't work they are just as troublesome as actually trying to figure out how to do it yourself. Hope they get it right soon because those new M1 and M2 machines are really nice altogether.

      From my take, for it to take off, is for a vendor to start selling a Linux box that will integrate with most to all your devices. The main problem with Apple is that they control your data. If a vendor manages to sell a Linux box that will host all your data and supports the maintenance of it, then you have a better way than Apple. Currently, setting up everything yourself, for most people, is not a better way.

  • @matthewargyros59

    As a linux user I get the premise and the idea behind the video, yes of course we can do all that, we can actually do whatever we want it's a fully customisable OS. However, we have to bare in mind that the people that use Apple or Windows products do it because of the ease that a solid UI provides. We know how to tinker and create through the terminal but most apple users that connect their devices have never even touched a terminal and they are not the crowd that even wants to. If we were to create apps that could do these connections as seamlessly and effectively as the apple ecosystem does then we could actually refer these people to Linux but as long as it remains terminal based it's going to deter most of casual users from adopting it. Think about all of the setup it takes to even achieve these, it's not really all that long a process and just because I'm intrigued I'll do it myself but the 40 year old office worker that barely knows how to manage a file system through a UI like windows explorer is not even going to know this is possible nor would they dare attempt it due to how overwhelming it must look to them, it was never about capabilities as much as it is about ease of access. Sure I can manage my own server were all my phone files are automatically backed up to my PC, allowing me to have back ups without any corporate cloud use and sure it is more safe if I know what I'm doing but can and should everyone know how to do all this, when their 1000$ apple phone does it for them with a subscription and the push of a button (in my opinion yes but it's highly unlikely that it'll ever happen)?

    Things we still need to ( maybe ) figure out to shut "apple ecosystem" users up forever:
    1. Receiving phone calls on your computer. ( Not just receiving notification )
    2. Ipads: MacOS syncs with IPads in a way that you can just go from one to other. ( I haven't used it actually and don't know much about this feature although I don't know how something like this would translate to linux. )
    3. Continuity Camera. This should work on Linux just like the microphone did and I have used an android app that just lets you use your camera via WiFi on your computer.
    4. Handoffs ( Continuous web browsing ): This should also be easy as i've noticed even Firefox has this third mode which lets you continue from where you left off on your computer. ( Although I guess that needs you to sign up which is logical )
    5. Universal Clipboard: I don't know if this feature is even useful as it feels annoying to share clipboards on multiple devices although I guess it is pretty much achievable.
    6. Siri: I don't understand if they bring it up. Do they or anyone even uses Siri. ( Even tho it is achievable on Linux )
    7. Apple Watches: If they bring this up, Smart Watches just integrate with you android phones and your android phones are already accessible. If we are able to achieve #1, this is already achieved.
    Apart from ecosystem features, there are some features in MacOS which I wish were available in the best possible way on Linux:
    Trackpad Gestures: Linux Trackpad Gestures, we need to admit, are not as good. I have used gestures on Gnome, KDE and Touché and none of those are as nice as the ones on MacBooks. The MacOS gestures still allow very less tweaking but they are very smooth. I saw bugs demostrate gestures on his HyprLand setup and i was quite impressed but they were still not nearly as smooth. ( Maybe, it's the trackpad hardware, so I am going to try to setup linux on a macbook and see for myself )

All of these are actually doable, it just takes time and I don't think anyone at the moment is prioritizing this. Google is now implementing a new USB camera feature like Motorola but on AOSP, so that should be fun to see - we can then just plug in our phone via USB and use it as a web camera. I hate to be that guy, but I sort of have to... A Windows system and a Linux system can BOTH beat the living daylights out of the Apple ecosystem.
    Only thing it takes is a dead CPU, dead motherboard or dead charge plug...
    Since Apple is anti right to repair and loves to encrypt their drives and even make it impossible to just move the storage drive to another board, Linux and Windows have a massive one up on Apple.
    Windows, you can plug your drive into any new machine and if you are lucky, boot it enough to save your data, or hook it up as a second drive and save your data at worst.
    Linux, you can boot it up and use it as if nothing had ever happened, even if the hardware is drastically different from what it was running on before the failure occurred.

    It's all about convenience. Us power users knew of ecosystem before Apple even had one. Them Apple users heard of 'ecosystem' from those Apple products, and it's all right there for you to use without any hassle. They loose the freedom that a system like Linux provides, but they never knew of/needed it in the first place.

    The short answer before even watching the videos is NO. You cannot match the Apple ecosystem with Linux. You can tinker, install lots of apps that can kinda sorta do some of the things. But ultimately its not near as smooth and doesn't come close to working as well or as seamless as Apple.
    I've been a Linux user since 2005 and a Mac user since 2008. You aren't going to compete with a $700 billion dollar company with free and open source software that the developers care so little about they wont even give it a decent UI...lol

    • @someoneelse5005
      @someoneelse5005 Рік тому +4

      UI is for the weak. Embrace the console. -Linux users, probably.
      Jokes aside as I've trailed off to the deep end, getting frustrated with Gnome on top of all the other desktops... going with a bare window management, I now understand why Linux is not newb friendly. Because people who are at its peak are so technical they have no idea how an average person would find the OS convenient.
      "Why do you want a UI to do this, all you have to do is go to /etc/fstab and..." yeah no shit buddy you can do it but the fact you have to edit a cryptic file in a cryptic way is already putting people off, and not only that you will also tell them to use vim or nano, when people are more used to things like notepad (or well, gedit, but you won't tell them to use gedit).
      So yeah, they/we just don't care. We can make it. But we won't use it. So we don't make it. It is a sad reality.

    Amazing, even being using Mac myself I would always recommend to go for Linux based eco-system to save money. Apple taxes are just being increased.

    Ok, so how long did it take you to set all of this up? Because there's absolutely no comparison between how seamless all of this integration is in the Apple ecosystem & the extended effort that it takes to set this up in other ecosystems.

      Also, no privacy, highly restricted, no freedom and way more expensive on apple. I don't see how it's even an argument. If those things means nothing to you stay with Apple, they need you for profit.

      All the Apple haters never talk about this lmfao - it takes a long time to set up. Now imagine you don’t know anything about Linux? It gets even worse.

      @@marcinzdunek2902 a few hours? You realize that it’s absolutely NOT a few hours with Apple products, right? You do realize that it’s pretty much immediately, right?

      @@ent2220 I’m not doing secret squirrel shit on my systems, so I don’t need NSA levels I’d privacy. I’m not restricted from doing anything that I want to do. I’m free to use my system however I intend to use it -I’m not chasing any white whales, so there’s nothing elusive here in terms of freedom. This isn’t some sort of tech holy war. I’ve spent decades in multiple OS camps & there’s always been one incredibly disturbing characterist shared by all of you “freedom” guys -you all seem to not realize that most people don’t want to spend hours setting up their tech ecosystem, they want to use their tech to get the job done for them as quickly & hassle free as possible. While you’re fiddling with your tech for hours just to set up everything to do what other products do right out of the box, an Apple user is finishing up their project. They’re finishing their work & you haven’t gotten a chance to even start yours. Your entire argument fell apart before you even started.

    The USB thing looks cool, but does not work. All I get is "unable to bind device" and it doesn't matter what device I try to bind.

    well done, my main pc is on windows but the rest of my machines are on arch and debian. SMB, FTP and SSH are all things i use on an almost daily basis along with VNC if i'm running a VM on my server. as for USB over IP, didn't know this was possible so i might give this a try
