      Don't know if you know the trick for sanding. if you get it smooth when mudding you can just use a damp sponge to finish it instead of sanding.

    My mother and dad built and remodeled a couple of the homes we grew up in. Anything my mom did took 4 times longer than dad. But dad always commented that her work meant there was 1/4 less work that he had to do. Working together might be why 68 years later they are still together :)

    One of the best channels on UA-cam, with two of the most appealing people on the planet. I'm amazed HGTV hasn't approached you guys with a contract to augment Chip and Joanna Gains. You'd have huge ratings. Absolutely love your family and the obvious joy you spread through the internet.
    Couple comments on this episode's content. As a forty-year general contractor who started out remodeling old '20s-era bungalows in Atlanta, I've seen too many accidents to count with nail guns -- particularly eye injuries -- mostly caused by "bump-nailing" where the operator hits a nail already embedded in the wood, and the subsequent nail goes flying, striking a nearby worker. Please Josh & Erin wear eye protection at all times, and make sure not to "sweep" one another with the muzzle of the nailer. Nearly 40,000 people a year end up in the ER with serious nail-gun related injuries.
    Next unsolicited tidbit: When taping (as opposed to skim-coating) use smaller taping knives (4" is good), and you'll cut down on wasted mud and hours of sanding. Much love to you and your family.

    For the first coat of mud I usually use a 4" knife. I use wider knives for subsequent mudding. No matter: if you can't have fun doing something it's probably not worth doing. It's cool that you're doing business with Matt & Meredith. I eagerly await your next installment.

    You guys have the right attitude about doing the jobs yourself, You can be proud of all the work you've done together. It's your house and soon to be home, who cares if everything isn't perfect, (it still came out beautiful) you did it yourselves and that goes a long way. If you were to do this work for someone else, that is an entirely different story. I'm the same way, I do my own work on my own home, not perfect, but it's the best I can do, again, it's MY home. I would never do this for someone else, I know my limits. I am so proud of you guys in everything you do, and do it together and Erin works right by your side Josh, awesome, my wife works with me also, and I love it. God Bless.

    OMG!!!! Seeing Josh in those jeans, I am going to have to seek therapy to get that image out of my head!!!!! Lol
    A tip on when your doing dry wall muddling. Take a damp sponge and go over the mud when it’s just about set up or dry. It will smooth it out so you don’t have to sand as much.
    You all are doing a great job things are looking good. Here is the great thing about all of this. When you’re all done the satisfaction you’re going to have to know you put in all that hard work to build your own home and farm!

  • @57firetruck
    @57firetruck 5 років тому +1

    Use a smaller 4" dry wall knife for the screws and first tape coat and it will be less messy and go faster with less waste. It's also easier to pull it tight!
    Another tip is to clean the drywall bucket sides before closing the lid, this keep the mud on the sides from drying and then falling into your "clean" mud next time you use it. For long term storage of a open bucket, clean the sides, smooth out the top of the mud and cover it with a layer of clean water...it will store like this for years...just don't let it freeze. Next time you use the mud either blend the water in if it isn't to much or just pour it out.

    FYI... 13:04 A drywall sponge is much easier and better than sanding on those thick areas over the screws. Just use any sponge, get it wet, but ring it out completely, then go over those thick areas. It took me a lot of sanding, before I discovered this trick. It also prevents the drywall paper from getting torn up with sandpaper, and no DUST! Yay!
    Love you guys!!!

I do notice that in the States the rules aren't as strict as here. It's the only thing I've yet to explore and the solar off grid stuff has renewed my interest. Just saying I appreciate the ease in which you explain it and make it simple enough to follow along with.

    Erin this is a family channel. Just because she is a girl definitely doesn't mean she can't be ironman. The mud I completely agree with josh when you sand please use a firm, flat, damp to wet sponge. The wetness will soften the the mud and smear it into the low spots while knocking down the dry spots. Don't apply hard pressure and just let the sponge do all the work. This will eliminate the nightmare of spreading dust throughout every square inch of the house. I love the gear as soon as I can I will be ordering a hoodie and a shirt for my wife while patiently waiting on the wild flannel. Sorry Erin my vote is for Josh any man that can pull off those jeans deserves this win. Thanks as always you two the drone and new format are cool. And last but not least congrats little man on the great camera work your son definitely has talent behind the camera and a bright future ahead of him, all three do with such good parents have a great day.
