Haven't communicated with you guys in awhile. How much snow now on January 21? We moved to Gaylord from Tucson in March of '84. About 6" on the ground at the time and we thought, "we can handle this." Grew up in SE Michigan but never lived that far north. So, in November '84 it started snowing and didn't stop until April '85. 60" in December alone and a total of 200" by the time it was done. Since I was a snow rookie, I made every mistake in the book that year, but learned my lesson and by the fall of '85 I was ready by my self-imposed deadline of October 15. Also learned how to snowblow a driveway so it doesn't become a one lane tunnel to your garage. Bring it on! Now look back on it with fond memories. Especially the 4' drifts on the roof and the kids with their saucer sleds sliding off the roof onto the piles below. Enjoy your first "real" winter in northern Michigan. Make sure you're journaling.
Hi guys. Live a mike in the bush in Cananda and bought a tractor that worked for grading road but too sliw for winter snow removal. Get a good plow truck with chains on the back tires and you will plow your driveway i. To your cabin in ten minutes allowing you to drive in. Had a skidoo and an argo for bringing in food and groceries and bottle water and now we just drive in with car. It is the right tools for the job. Dint make it hard on yourself. We did all you are trying. Going out in minus 30 on the back if a sled or the argo with kids to school becomes no fun for anyone after awhile. Get a good plow truck with heat.
I hope that tractor doesn’t nickel and dime you to death. I finally broke down and bought a tractor and blower because my plow truck was always breaking down. Better to blow the snow than push it especially when you get that much snow!
Here in the hills along lake Erie south of Buffalo we don't even consider that a dusting. I have a 650 ft driveway and a 4wd Silverado with a plow. After two five foot snow events I have yet to start the backhoe to open up the road entrance. I use a 4wd ATV to do clean up. For this much snow I wouldn't even start the the truck, I would just use one of the ATVs.
Exactly! Lol I "trick or treated" in deeper snow a few times growing up in the U.P. of the 60's & 70's. People don't understand how big and different Michigan is. I remember leaving campus for Xmas in B.R./G.R. when it was 60 and being the LAST car allowed to cross the Big Mac with a State Bull escort, only to have to drive 7 more hours (normally 4.5 hours)west in snow up to the floorboards the whole way! Lol. You Buffalo folks KNOW what snow is! Lol
we built a utility building for solar and water. then we heat it with a diesel heater. we have a 275 gallon IBC Tote for fresh Ozone treated and filtered water. Diesel heaters are amazing, we heat two buildings with them. the boss of the swamp has a skirted cabin and never has things freeze.
YOU ALL ARE A LOT TOUGHTER THAN I AM I AM 65 YEARS OLD AND COULD NOT KEEP UP WITH YOU ALL I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THAT COZY CABIN STAY WARM DAVE OUT LOVE YOU ALL
Jay have you tried spraying cooking stay on your snowblower on the auger and inside the shoot because we do that so the snow doesn't stick and no it won't hurt anything
Boss of the Swamp has a few videos on ice dams on that kind of roof set up, if you need to watch something about that. We still have no snow in NE Oklahoma.
Thats a lot of snow to clear nice to have the snowmobils , Those sleds are tough and deep very nice .& good size deffinantly be helpful to ya .. We had that much then luckly it rained and melted most thank god. Too bad you dont have heater to keep things warm over winter including water lines, But you folks need a break away from home like anyone else , Youll all be missed . I remember you doing this last year interesting and informative.
Not going anywhere ! Just winterizing cabin cuz well 1. System isn't set up for these cold temps and 2. No Rainwater to collect for our system when it's this cold. We'll be making videos and here all winter long
Jay/Jen , i enjoy your content! I subed your channel, I've got to admit, you both are braver then I !!!! I live in the north part of Texas, i don't know if i could handle that much cold! But now at 62, i dont handle the heat here very well anymore, im looking for somewhere that would give me a happy medium, maybe het myself a shed to house type set up. But im thinking full time, it's going to be only me! Preferably not to gar from a town! But i like your set up 👍🇺🇸
That new sled looks like a great piece of kit Jay, you can carry so much more stuff, we don’t get enough snow here anymore to use something like that, I particularly like the bar that attaches it to your snow mobile, safety all around, tfs guys x Julie 🇬🇧
I'm loving your content, and all your hard work. It would be great to see the outputs from your solar before and after you do your "daily" snow clearing. It would just be nice to know a little more about how much you are getting from the solar in these snowy times. Thanks!
Very nice sled! I'm still trying to figure out how to deal with cold temp here in Kentucky since we just don't really get the snow to melt and being off grid. Other than hauling water in. Oh and way to clear those panels off like a true Michigander-in shorts 😅
Jay you need a separate boost MPPT charger for your little wind turbine - I have one that charges my e-bike - a model CTK300 - II - The thing will give you a charge in a low wind - Once you generate 8v it starts charging - It can handle 300watts
Is this real thing? Cuz I'm considering switching the turbine batteries to 12 volt just so they can charge in slower wind. The turbine will produce 15-20 volts when wind is 5-10 MPH but it only charges the 24 volt system when winds are 10-15+ which is less than ideal
Oh my that's a lot of snow. It's nice to have a neighbor that will help you guys out when the going gets rough. We too have such a neighbor that takes care of our cabin. We haven't been there in 5 months because of health issues but good news , we 're heading down to SC after Christmas. I'm feeling stronger and no appointments or tests to bog us down. Deer season will still be open! I worry you guys will have so much snow you won't be able to get to the out house or wood shed. God Bless you and hope conditions don't get worse.
I'm glad you're able to capture some of the snow as a water source. Otherwise the snow is beautiful. Wishing you the best of the holidays and a safe winter
awesome video guys! and yes, u guys might want to invest in some snow stoppers for next year, we also have a tin roof and use to have that same problem with snow, not anymore, we put them on every sloped part of the roof, about 16 inches up from the edge, and they do work, anyway. god bless, c ya'll next time
@@johnr3603 there are all kinds of different models, but for tin roofs its usually a "V" shape long piece of tin the runs along the edge of a tin roof to stop the snow from curling down the side of the house, u can google it to see it, have a nice evening

Jen-- Could you make some "pay for". digital downloads for that snow overhang & icicle configuration? I think they could make some really cool still shots in color and b&w. Jay--at least this early snow will help restore the water table, which is much needed. Ohio is severely lacking in any precipitation catch-up for the past few years. Stay warm and safe this winter and healthy New Year!
First time viewing your videos. As a Michigander its nice to see youtubers from my home.state. I do have a question. My hubby and I consider buying property in northern lower Michigan to put our RV on so we could have our own get away spot. Rules and reguations say we can only camp 90 days out of the year. If your doing off grid, do you have to deal with permits and inspectors?
Hi folks. Really enjoy your videos (from OHIO). I've seen folks from Alaska and they literally chop over hanging ice from the bottom up to relieve the pressure. Hope your spouting holds. Stay safe.
Jay love and enjoy your videos. May the lord bless and protect you and Jen working on the tractor and the homestead and keep cleaning the solar panels and going in and out of the cabin.
That's a nice sled Jay. Looking forward to seeing the wind turbine video for sure. Glad you got the tractor fixed and winterized everything, that's a lot of snow..
We have a place six miles off the road. The only access is ATV or snowmachine. 5-6 feet of snow is common. I lived there half the time and worked away from home. We built a place close to town and still spend much of our summers there. We are in our 70s.
Hello Jay and Jen a lot of people are wondering why you would want to live in a climate like that well I totally understand it's beautiful and you love it❤. I'm new to your channel so with the way everything looks it kind of looks like Michigan or upstate New York. I live about a quarter mile from lake Erie in Huron Ohio and it usually doesn't get much snow here because of the way the lake is shaped it kind of blows right over us and further east gets hammered with lake effect. Don't get me wrong I've seen it very very cold here like -27 where I was working out in that and I've seen a lot of snow here too but hopefully we'll get hammered this year. We've already had a little bit of snow 🌨️ hopefully a whole lot more I like to watch the kids going down the hills. Anyway guys have a merry Christmas 🎄 and a far better new year to come.

I know a lot of folks like those wind turbines, but for the cost, upkeep, and noise they generate, I wouldn't have one. I have a feeling you'll wind up throwing that thing away before you get your cost (time, energy) out of it....even if you got it for free.

Jay, is your snow lake effect snow or is it coming down from the north?
I know a lot of folks like those wind turbines, but for the cost, upkeep, and noise they generate, I wouldn't have one. I have a feeling you'll wind up throwing that thing away before you get your cost (time, energy) out of it....even if you got it for free.
But the dogs can be inside the sledge and you just have to pull it 😁
100%
Good mornin 🖐😎👍
Good evening my friend
Is that RV antifreeze safe for the water system
Yea, ignis non toxic and biodegradable. Used in RV water systems all the time. You just have to flush it out well
Why do you have to shut the water off? Is it because you can't collect water in winter or because of the freezing?
Freezing. All our collection system and p I pumps are above ground so they would freeze at night
The shoot on the blower is shooting almost staight up. Jay, maybe if you aim the shoot down more.
Ya it's not a great system, but works ok
You get the shed at Northwoods in Pinconning ??
You know....I have driven by and seen the billboard a million times......but have never been
Your missing a great store , all kinds of outdoor supplies , they have things you will not see in the others like Jays and Cabelas .
Do you plan on retiring to the cabin full time
I always say we are semi-retired.....we live simple and spend most our time at the cabin already.....no need to wait until we retire.
Time to get a 2nd wind generator
