No brands mentioned but it took me over a year to make my decision when I decided to go with Eastonmade. I looked at a lot of other brands and I am so happy I went with Andrew. My 22-28 is a production monster and when something ugly comes up the 22-28 even with a 6 way wedge just smashes it. No better splitter on the market than a Eastonmade.
its a nice splitter and i can see 1 or 2 generations of it down the road being even better, definitely needs the log lift though for those heavy rounds.
That was an excellent review! That was also a good observation about the table width and the possible pinch point on the edge of the table. That could have saved someone some grief. Good job Chris! Joe
Hi Chris. I just subscribed to your channel after viewing one of your recent videos and you suggested I look at your archived videos and this is the first one I picked. I'm looking at an Eastonmade Axis diesel. I live about an hour away from the "factory" and Andrew has invited me up to have a look-see! Unfortunately, they are parting ways with Honda but they are developing a Kubota diesel version (Along with Briggs & Stratton gas). One tip I have for you is when you get a compact tractor (not if) get a bucket mounted clamp-on receiver to move your splitter around. Unbelievably easy to maneuver a shorter trailer with the front-mounted hitch. Back to the video...
Yes, the Axis is a real neat machine! It is a good design, inspired from the Powerspilt splitter I'm sure. Thanks for the tips and for watching! See you here tomorrow!
Awesome vid that day Chris! I have watched this video when i first started watching your channel, it’s an awesome review, fun day there that day! 🔥💯👍. See you soon! Andrew from NB :)
Very nice, that splitter definitely gets the job done. I lube with bar oil and automatic transmission fluid seems to work well. And that was one heck of a load of wood, I'm sure they are very satisfied.Nice job fellas 👍
I have a Timber wolf splitter from Vermont. I wish I had seen Andrew's splitters before I got mine but I have had it for over 10 years, It is the TW-1 with a 4 way head and is really impressive for as small as it is. I like the ultra and think it would be nice. I like Andrews videos and he seems to make quality products. I live just 80 miles from the Paul Bunyon show, where it is held today. I retired from Hocking college which hosted the Paul Bunyon show for 40 years.
Thanks for the shoutout @InTheWoodyard. I need to try different height settings on the 4-way to see if it works better. Yeah if your not tall filling the gas tank can be difficult
Hey Joe, ya, I put mine kinda high so that the pieces that only need to be split in half just slide under the horizontal blades on the wedge and only get split by the vertical blade.
Bran new first job I went and did an hour in the Underneath the pusher snapped off the problem was The hydraulic piston wasnt Built right so the 2nd working alright I Owen my Owen company going to Peoples houses and splitting firewood for them with it so it seems to be working fine still
Great splitter Easton made make nice machine. This double your production. That old splitter owes you nothing it split tons of wood. One day maybe I get to your current videos watching them from the beginning. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Nice review Chris, if you run out of waste oil try using bar oil, lasts longer, another thing if your bottom skid plate on front jack is removable, replace with wheel attachment, this will make it move back easier when splitting. Nice machine happy splitting!
Looks like a well made wood splitter except the ram plate. I don't understand why they made that so small. Looks like it was flipping a lot of the bigger logs back at you. Was there a option to get a bigger plate. Maybe a question to ask the designer. Have a Great Day, GOD BLESS
Great suggestion, should tell Andrew, to tilt the table edges to 45 degree. As for the lubrication of the bed try ATF (automatic transmission fluid) it will clean and lubricate too. You can fill a small oil can and squirt ti toward the pusher to lubricate it too.
Hi Chris, been watching your channel for sometime now, the new splitter was the first thing I was wondering why has he not got a faster more efficient model. I had and big smile on my face, as you made the evaluation of the Eastonmade Ultra. I am wondering how many ,well I nevers, shucks and boy o boys, etc, were spoken. You were like a kid in a candy store with your report, and got the early Xmas present you really wanted. Hope Santa gives you the Tractor you really wanting, only way is, to be a good boy. hahaha. Hell yeah, that splitter is QUICK! Great addition to your operation, the progress is really visible - also the lot is looking nice, a good preview what is about to come in the video ;)
Great helper, get a sizer jack bolt a 4x4 on it to help lift the wedge up and down you can adjust the height instead of getting up to look, looks like you have a set height,I use mine for everything and they are light
Hi Chris!!😀😀 The Ultra is a decent splitter. The only thing I really don't like about them is I feel that the pusher plate needs to be the same height as the wedge is. That way the blocks wouldn't flip backwards and would push it through. Andrew didn't like it to well when I criticized it. Keep a eye on the bolts that hold the push plate so they don't come loose like Joe's did. Keep up the good work buddy!!😀😀 Logger Al
Love your content. So now two years later, would you buy the Ultra again? I have a Countyline 25 ton that does the trick, but I’m curious how you feel now.
If you want the cylinder to return on its own then you should have ordered an auto cycle valve instead of a 1 spool valve. You can convert it for around $425 or so? The auto cycle valve is about $350 and you'll need another hose and some random fittings, on top of rebuilding the mount for the valve.
Chris, you along with a few others have inspired me to start doing firewood! Besides the price, why the ultra over the axis? Also what’s your thoughts on bagging wood? Haven’t heard you talk about it yet. I’m starting small with a cheap splitter but I’m just thinking about how I want to scale up in the future. The convenience and time saved bagging and using a tractor with forks to move it around would take production through the roof.
Good for you Tyler! I will do a video soon about the bag thing. For me, I would need 700-800 bags at $15 each so...over $12,000 Plus a elevator to load them $8,000 plus a tractor to move them $30,000 and load into a truck or trailer and then, how do you off load them a t the customers place?!?! That means three years of wood sales to break even.... so... now do you see? Start small and add stuff as you grow with cash, and you will do fine.
Loving my ultra had mine for over a year . i have over 100 hours on it ( put an hour meter on when i first bought it) , i have about 75 full cord through it. The cycle time is addictingly fast... need more wood!!!
So good to see that you're using a much faster splitter now. Most of the features that you listed aren't on the Ultra but are on the non-Ultra ones. It's ironic that the splitter named "ultra" is the bottom of the range one. All of Andrews other splitters have much bigger push plates, auto return, hydraulic wedge adjustment and hydraulic log lift. What you do get from the Ultra is great build quality, fast cycle time and a fair bit of oomph.
Those are the 💣 BOMB!!!!! What price are they? I looked on the site but none have any pricing information. I'd love to have the auto load and conveyor , and a "Boy"' to run it for me. But the machine you have would be much more than enough. I have one from a box store that is nothing but welding rods holding welding rods. Seriously I've replaced the wear plates twice on it. In fact it's gotten so fatigued that the cylinder ripped at a factory weld and sprayed so hard it knocked the lense outa my glasses the other day. I'm sure it would have taken my eye out if not for that lense.
Wow, it sounds like you NEED a new splitter! The Eastonmade ULTRA I have was $4700 delivered from Canada, you want to talk to Gerry there he is the salesman. Just so you know it takes 6-9 months to get one!
@@InTheWoodyard Ok. About twice the cost of the mass production splitter. But 10 times the machine. It seems they would do something about their production methods if the wait times were that long. They're loosing lots of sales I'm sure because of that.
@@coburnlowman Actually, people are willing to wait because they are so good! All manufactures are way behind because of parts not being available because of the CHINA flu!
@@InTheWoodyard Yes. You are correct about getting supplies. I found out that the full auto machines with big power and box wedge is just over $10,000. Now that machine would and could knock out mountains of split wood faster than two or three could drag to it. Just saying for a full timer that wouldn't be a terrible investment , the speed would free up time for delivering wood.
Just wondering why you went with eastonmade which is a great choice i want one myself. Why not a wolf ridge splitter which is made in Wisconsin just wondering if they were a choice and if so what made you choose the eastonmade price, quality, etc
I've used gear oil bottles filled with waste oil for lubricating things like this. They're nice because they hold a good amount and have a small diameter nozzle/spout for dripping a line of oil down the surface that needs to be lubricated.
There has got to be a way of strapping onto a piece stuck on the wedge and allow the return to pull itself out of the wood. Using a sledge is tough work.
You could make up a spacer that stays put at the correct height to help with switching to the 4-way when you're on your own. I'd probably make something with a slot so that it slips over the center vertical plate and underneath the horizontal wings.
I wonder how it would operate with rollers instead of a skid? Same type of rollers as used in loading heavy equipment pallets into aircraft or semi trailers.
Hy chris looking good I see you are reminding us at the beginning of the video when you watch on the TV you can't get it in . Recommendation don't git to small of a ATV. 500 cc or bigger you won't be sorry. Love the show very motivating. Ken and vickie
Nice splitter. I can see how the sides of the tray can be detrimental to production. But man, the return speed of the ram is great! Looks like the name of your helper is gonna be hernia.
I'll be stuck with a farm supply store $1000 log splitter for a while when I do get one. Really want one with log lift, but don't have the $5-7k to get one. Guess is best to bust up the wood with a cheap splitter and use the profits to get a proper commercial grade splitter.
It has finally appeared! Nice review. Few things... 1) grease top and bottom of beams. And like joe learned, check and retorque fasteners. 2) yeah 90* table edge stiffeners do cause an issue once in awhile. I have same issue on mine. I built my table so the edge stiffeners can be removed. But I do believe that table is not wide enough especially when using the 4 way. With my table and log lift up I have over 16 sqft of flat. Makes big resplits easy. 3) you are a human pull back arm😆 I think a 12-22 with box wedge and auto cycle is in your future or the Axis?? 4) Have you tried joes idea of placing a garbage can or something of waist height stand next to your side of splitter where you can place big half/quarter while you break down other half/quarter? I think that might compensate for table space and a little easier handling/pulling back. 5) I thought maybe you were going to joes house with that wood...nope😆
You can find oil pots from several suppliers, the have 1/8 not threads, and reservoir, and drip flow, fairly simple, the small reservoir of 1/2 “ dia could be protected behind pusher front plate, refill with squirt gun Oiler, every 4 hrs use.
Dave Schooley this is true but in this application if lubrication points were installed I would just install zerks and use some Schaffer’s grease. Dump used small engine oil on the boiler wood.
@@InTheWoodyard its half hour from the lake I fish too, but I usually have the boat with me, so I'd half to make a separate trip. I'm always thinking efficiency XD Have a good Easter weekend
If you are going to let the machine slide it self along the leveling jack as you split you might want to run a small steel cable from the foot of the jack to near the hydraulic oil tank to keep it from bending if it hangs up on something as it tries to slide. Nice machine!
That one does not have auto valve for a safety feature as it is a fast splitter main reason I opted to order the 5-11 over the ultra originally had the ultra on order but went to the bigger one just waiting for it to be finished !
You can replace the valve handle your self for an auto return. If your other splitters have the auto return you can take it from one of those and put it on that one.
Mr. Tow said it , but I would guess 50% more fuel, but that is only comparing time, production wise it's probably less because it's making so much more pieces faster!
Tip: Put your waste oil in an old squeeze syrup bottle. It makes it easier to apply. I also use a squeeze syrup bottle for my bar and chain oil for my chainsaw. It makes filling in the field easy with no funnel. Do not use a dish soap bottle as the opening is too small and the oil won’t flow well in the winter.
I had the opportunity to run the ultra Joe has. It is almost as fast as my kinetic splitter. I think the ultra is better because it is consistent. I will have one sometime in the next year or so.
@@InTheWoodyard I understand. Their site says that splitter is $4000, but yet if you want to add it in a cart, it says its $5200. Maybe they should iron out their website a little bit.
you went from country to rock and roll listening on your headset while splitting ha ha ha , was wondering how it was gonna be moving around. how mush faster you think it is compared to your old one ? 3 or 4 times faster ?
Yes and Yes! I like all kinds of music and I'm not sure what you guys like so I just try everything. And it's easily 3xs faster, the problem is feeding it fast enough.
@@InTheWoodyard nice , just meant your other splitter slow like country and the new one like rock and roll lol because its faster. i listen to everything as well if i like it
And a tractor and processor and a dump truck! HA! the lists of wants I have is big and growing! If I keep growing the business, those things will come! Thanks!
The automatic return is very very important. It is really to bad they did not put that on. You should ask them to correct this situation. You would appreciate it so much and it’s so easy to do.
Bigger Easton splitters have a cradle that holds the log. So you don't need to keep your hands in harms way. Most manufactures won't put full auto cycle on splitters for liability reasons. I have a 12-22 eastonmade with full auto cycle and really like it.
Hi Chris. What about getting a 6 x 6 peice of wood notched out in precise sections to adjust the 4 way wedge instead of a floppy log. Im new to the channel. Thoughts? 🍻
I just love my Eastonmade Ultra! But left to me, I found its weak spot. I can tell you from experience do NOT tow this wood splitter, as just the bouncing driving down the road will cause the motor mounting plate to bend down, leaving the motor slightly off level. I can say from experience that although the Ultra has really nice wheels on it, the unit must be trailed to wherever you are taking it to. Bill Rogers
Surecan makes a nice bottom hosed can . I have both diesel and gas versions. Moving a splitter around you need so see your local Kubota dealer for a diesel powered wheelbarrow :)
That multi cutting blade it looks to me the blades are level with the table if the back end of the blade was tilted up about 5 degrees it would eliminate most of your wood jamming up and you wouldn’t have to bang the wood to loosen it.
Eastonmade splitter looks nice but very small push plate. If I was going to spend some money on a splitter I would go with a wolf ridge because they will split the big stuff without a problem and have a bigger push plate and easy change out plate the rounds you split the woodridge would split it with the four way wedge watch back 40.
Speed, I bought it for speed not being able to crush 40" rounds. Yes everyone wants it to have a 2 foot square push plate. Also it was $3500 not $10,000+.
Yup, that's about right, usually I have found the multiplier is about 2.3xs so 33-35 face depending on the accuracy of the truckload measure and if there are some deductions plus or minus.
@@InTheWoodyard a face cord is not a volumes unit until you know the length of the logs. So your logs are about 21" long then? A face cord is a unit of an area equal to 4'x8'= 32 sqft. If the length of the logs is 16" then there are 3 face cords on a full cord. If logs are 24" long there will be 2.0 face cords on 1 full cord. Sorry, it confused me equalizing 35 face cords with 15 full cords without revealing the length of the logs... I still think you did a great job reviewing what seems to be a great log splitter. Keep it up!

Yes Greg, the 4 way is great but not with crotches of stringy wood like that. The first two truck loads I used the 4 way all the time it was maple and oak and never had a bit of problem! I looked at a couple of USA made machines but they cost more and where not as fast and not designed as well. Plus when I called to talk to them and asked questions they either didn't know the answer or didn't seem to want my business.
Drill a small hole in the cap of the oil bottle, this lets out a small amount of oil, saves taking the cap off every time and not let too much oil out when bottle is full.
Should have a Left or Right engine placement option (for the heat) also I think engine could be a little lower. AGREE! Auto cycle on this would be wiked
I had to laugh at your description of a two-man operation. One man will be on this side loading the rounds (the hard work) and I'LL be over here moving the lever. Just jerking your chain, you never have to worry about being called lazy by anyone that watches your channel. A new splitter and some help and you're really ready to go warp speed.

Ok.
@@InTheWoodyard
Yes.
Price design and mostly SPEED!
I've used gear oil bottles filled with waste oil for lubricating things like this. They're nice because they hold a good amount and have a small diameter nozzle/spout for dripping a line of oil down the surface that needs to be lubricated.
That's a good idea!
Pancake syrup and dish soap containers work well also. Use them for my chainsaw bar oil.
@@stevethiel5838 Another good idea, Steve!
@@stevethiel5838 also good ones!
Awesome vid!!
Glad you enjoyed it, I have another 200+ for you to watch and a new one every morning! Thanks Alexis!
There has got to be a way of strapping onto a piece stuck on the wedge and allow the return to pull itself out of the wood. Using a sledge is tough work.
David, watch todays video #225 you'll see a chain trick that works great!
You could make up a spacer that stays put at the correct height to help with switching to the 4-way when you're on your own. I'd probably make something with a slot so that it slips over the center vertical plate and underneath the horizontal wings.
Yup, I'm going to make a wood block to size!
I wonder how it would operate with rollers instead of a skid? Same type of rollers as used in loading heavy equipment pallets into aircraft or semi trailers.
I'm thinking about getting a trailer jack/cart.
Hy chris looking good I see you are reminding us at the beginning of the video when you watch on the TV you can't get it in . Recommendation don't git to small of a ATV. 500 cc or bigger you won't be sorry. Love the show very motivating. Ken and vickie
Thank Vickie and Ken! Bigger is almost always better!
Nice splitter. I can see how the sides of the tray can be detrimental to production. But man, the return speed of the ram is great! Looks like the name of your helper is gonna be hernia.
Yes, you are right!
I'll be stuck with a farm supply store $1000 log splitter for a while when I do get one. Really want one with log lift, but don't have the $5-7k to get one. Guess is best to bust up the wood with a cheap splitter and use the profits to get a proper commercial grade splitter.
That's what I did, I used a slow consumer grade splitter for 5 years before I stepped up a bit to get more speed.
What pressure does that ultra run at? Or better yet, when it spikes, what is that max pressure?
I honestly don't know, I would answer...enough, it does all I need it to.
Garny, thanks for all the tips, I will work on them!
And you add Teflon wear strips on the ram?
No, I did not but that is a very good idea Bill!
Very nice splitter but i think a taller, wider push plate would be an improvement.
Maybe, I thought that too, but it seems to work fine so far!
Very nice splitter. Cycle time is a lot quicker than your old one. I'll have to stick to my fiskars , though it would be nice to have an Easton made.
You do get a lot of exercise with the Fiskars!
How good would it be if you could cut in the grapple at the time of delivery
Ha! Ya it would be nice but the driver would be there all day!
@@InTheWoodyard Amazing what people will do for a case of beer.
Eastonmade is about 3 hours from me. If my home made machine doesn't work out well, I'm gonna buy one of these.
Wow, you are lucky, the shipping is $1000 for me, you can just go pick it up! You will like one a lot!
@@InTheWoodyard its half hour from the lake I fish too, but I usually have the boat with me, so I'd half to make a separate trip. I'm always thinking efficiency XD
Have a good Easter weekend
Would a log lift be worth having?
Yes sir it sure would be!
If you are going to let the machine slide it self along the leveling jack as you split you might want to run a small steel cable from the foot of the jack to near the hydraulic oil tank to keep it from bending if it hangs up on something as it tries to slide. Nice machine!
Great idea, I'm thinking of putting a wheel on the jack leg for easier movement!
That one does not have auto valve for a safety feature as it is a fast splitter main reason I opted to order the 5-11 over the ultra originally had the ultra on order but went to the bigger one just waiting for it to be finished !
Ya, looking back now a 5-11 would be a good / better choice maybe, but I wanted a lighter machine. Next time!
You can replace the valve handle your self for an auto return. If your other splitters have the auto return you can take it from one of those and put it on that one.
Yes or just get a bigger better splitter with all of the toys too!
You said about how thirsty it is but I'm curious what is your wood per gallon vs the old splitter
Mr. Tow said it , but I would guess 50% more fuel, but that is only comparing time, production wise it's probably less because it's making so much more pieces faster!
@TowME trailers You are a gem and smart!
@@InTheWoodyard thats how I was looking at it more wood per gallon probably double the wood per gallon if I had to guess
@@williamwhite9275 Probably!
Ed that is a good idea! I just poked a hole in the cap and that works good too.
I had the opportunity to run the ultra Joe has. It is almost as fast as my kinetic splitter. I think the ultra is better because it is consistent. I will have one sometime in the next year or so.
Tom, that's why I bought it, fast, enough power and not to expensive.
Now you can, move faster than a glacier.. Lol
Glad you like the new splitter..
Daniel save your pennies and get one, you'll love it!
@@InTheWoodyard : right now that is the plan..
What size is your dump trailer?
We have 4 of them on the farm now...a 5x10 7k and a 6x12 10k and 2 14x7 14k trailers this is a 3 1/2 year old video.
@@InTheWoodyard what one holds a full bushcord ( not stacked)
After all that aren’t you gona tell us how much they paid for that wood ??
Love your videos !
That was a full load, 4 face cords or 1&1/3 of a full cord, $440
Great video, but I would have a Wolfe Ridge Splitter, hands down. Love our 28 Pro!
That is a nice splitter you got there, I only had $3,500 to spend and I wanted speed. Thanks for watching!
@@InTheWoodyard I understand. Their site says that splitter is $4000, but yet if you want to add it in a cart, it says its $5200. Maybe they should iron out their website a little bit.
@@TheCrazyPlace Canadian pesos.....check the exchange rate.
you went from country to rock and roll listening on your headset while splitting ha ha ha , was wondering how it was gonna be moving around. how mush faster you think it is compared to your old one ? 3 or 4 times faster ?
Yes and Yes! I like all kinds of music and I'm not sure what you guys like so I just try everything. And it's easily 3xs faster, the problem is feeding it fast enough.
@@InTheWoodyard nice , just meant your other splitter slow like country and the new one like rock and roll lol because its faster. i listen to everything as well if i like it
Put an exhaust deflected plate on it or maybe you can rotate the outlet on the muffler, if it has one.
I'll check that out Ed! Thanks for the suggestion!
I would think the box wedge would work nice.
And add a conveyor.
I was told that it was a safety issue? Not sure. The 5-11 has it and is fast also.
Bigger Easton splitters have a cradle that holds the log. So you don't need to keep your hands in harms way. Most manufactures won't put full auto cycle on splitters for liability reasons. I have a 12-22 eastonmade with full auto cycle and really like it.
When I seen the orange and blue I got a little jealous.. mine won't be ready till March 2021...
It was a long wait, but worth it. What model are you getting?
I'm getting the 12-22 with 3.5 box wedge and 4 way
@@sureflamefirewood4174 Then I'll be jealous!
Hi Chris. What about getting a 6 x 6 peice of wood notched out in precise sections to adjust the 4 way wedge instead of a floppy log. Im new to the channel. Thoughts? 🍻
I like it! And I already did that, a bunch of fellas smarter than me suggested it. Thanks for watching!
@@InTheWoodyard wow. Thanks for the quick reply. That idea just came into my head. SUBSCRIBED.
Bill Rogers
Yup, less than 25 MPH and in a trailer/truck is best!
You, that's awesome
New toys are fun, some day I'll grow up.
@@InTheWoodyard dont make that mistake!

Surecan makes a nice bottom hosed can . I have both diesel and gas versions. Moving a splitter around you need so see your local Kubota dealer for a diesel powered wheelbarrow :)
I'll check out the Surecan, thanks. And yes, a tractor is on my list!
Are use a Surecan to put gas in my boat. It works great.
Does anyone know what makes this splitter so fast? Im in the process of building a Kubota diesel log splitter and want it to be fairly quick
Yup, I know exactly why....Andrew Easton at EASTONMADE, just order one, it will be a good purchase.
hi there looks like gum ?
Maybe , but we don't have gum, it was cottonwood.
That multi cutting blade it looks to me the blades are level with the table if the back end of the blade was tilted up about 5 degrees it would eliminate most of your wood jamming up and you wouldn’t have to bang the wood to loosen it.
The blades are not level they do angle up.
Cool review but 15 full cords equals 35 face cords?
Keep it up!
Nylon ware plate under the push plate would fix that ware and lubricant issue. Tell Andrew. Try silicone spray
Stan, once again you are the man! Good ideas.
Did you research the Power Split before buying the ultra? Seems faster with a log lift
Yes, I wanted to get a Power Split bet didn't want to spent more than 5k and the Power Split is 20K or more.

Great review, this must be the most basic Easton made splitter, but works well. Changing the wedge must be difficult by yourself I think?
Thanks! 👍 Actually, now that I have a wedge to hold it in place it's real easy!
Stick it back in???
Sorry I do not know what that means?
Chris, what do you get for a full cord of hard wood?

Dude! At 16:05, you can tell your beard really grew over the time you were splitting wood! So in previous videos when you had a beard, was it just late in the day?
Ya, it grows fast! Ha!
Glad to see you use the 4 way wedged cuz i see another guy get one ga e to him by that company do to youtube and he only uses the one way wedged on it witch makes no dang sense to me at all . glad you like it im not a bug fan of this model i like to support usa mad . but your happy that's what matters the most.
The hard to split is like the almond wood we split here in the California central valley. Almond is not stringy just knotty.
Ya, I have heard that it is good stuff!
🤘
Thanks !!!!!
Drill a small hole in the cap of the oil bottle, this lets out a small amount of oil, saves taking the cap off every time and not let too much oil out when bottle is full.
Gerry you are a brilliant man! Thanks for the tip, I will give it a try!
What is the average retail for a face cord?
George that depends where you are, real rural areas- $50-$70, my area -$90-$120, big cities $200-$300+

I had to laugh at your description of a two-man operation. One man will be on this side loading the rounds (the hard work) and I'LL be over here moving the lever.
