Agreed. Compare a Diana Ross video and a Beyoncé video. Lol. There’s grace and something diff w Diana Ross. I also see Diana Ross as true r&b. Over the years r&b has changed and morphed into something else. Both legends in their right tho. Obviously. Lol

@@missrotf you literally said what I thought! You will never see Diana Ross, Patti LaBelle, Anita Baker, Dionne Warwick or Aretha Franklin in stage in a leotard sexing up a chair or twerking. You couldn't even imagine it because they're so classy it feels like it would diminish their class. I know that we're in a new era and dance moves have changed, but what we see from female entertainment today is heavily based in sexuality, that was not the case in Stephanie Mills era. Your voice was your presence and if you walked out on stage and never moved a limb and were covered from head to toe, your voice was enough to move people.

Diana Ross also rose to fame in an era where black artists (ESPECIALLY BLACK FEMALE ARTISTS) had it WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY more difficult than they do now. That's not to say there still aren't obstacles for black entertainers today but remember that during the early days of the Motortown Revue acts like The Supremes, The Tempations, The Miracles, etc. traveled to places down south where black and white people were separated during the concerts with a rope down the middle of the concert halls.
Diana and so many others helped to break barriers to allow acts like a Beyonce to rise to the top today. I love how Stephanie gave her opinion because she grew up and saw the impact of Diana and could compare it to Beyonce today. There's just a different lane in which both of these talented artists found their fame.
Class, glamor and success as an artist during the Motown days looks very different to the meaning of those words nowadays.

@@JoyHarrison Great poiny Joy! That's why I'm not surprised when I heard about violence in these urban night clubs. Most have no dress code anyway, you can come in with clean sneakers, jersey's, baseball caps, denim, etc., I mean, they walk in looking like thugs, not gentlemen. And the ladies are dressed in what a hooker would wear. I'm not surprised at the violence in that low class environment. Class today is not what class used to mean, when Diana Ross made her indelible mark.

My parents let us look at all of her performances. I can't let my kids look at Bey because she has a side to her that I choose not to comment on. Even if when Diana played in the 'WIZ', doesn't matter is she was in her 30's and by her vocal and stage play performances AND THEN MOVIES too.... No comparison to the style that she still has today. She broke records and touched many lives. She inspired many. Bey is 💯 HIP HOP. She is beautiful too. Bey was more R&B when she was with DESTINY CHILD. Since she left DC she has been HIP HOP. To be fair, and full disclaimer I was born in the early 90's, so I grew up watching and listening to Beyoncé, whilst Diana came from an earlier time, so most of my knowledge is not first-hand, but through looking back and respecting history.
Ms. Ross in my opinion was a pioneer in many ways. She opened the door for black women like Whitney, Janet & Beyoncé (just to name a few) to have the kind of careers where they could be major recording artists, star in feature films, partner with international brands and have worldwide success. Before Diana Ross that kind of career as a multifaceted performer touching every aspect of the entertainment industry and being considered an "icon," was not seen at that level from black women.
The ladies after did not have to tear down walls for the public to view a black woman in that light as Ms. Ross had been there, done that and left the door ajar for everyone else to come through.
By the time Beyoncé came a long, thanks to Whitney & Janet that was wide open and there was already a blueprint she could follow.
Ms. Mills is correct, there is no need to compare. They are different and should be appreciated for their individual artistry.

If Stephanie Mills is catching heat for saying Beyoncé cannot or should not be compared to Diana Ross she is 100% correct in her assessment. There is no comparison between the two...not in any way. Diana Ross is music LEGEND and ROYALTY. Her extraordinary charm, talent, steadfastness and perseverance oozes out of every pore and the niche she carved out for herself, with the help of Berry Gordy and many more still stands today as the standard those in the business strive to attain. The acting ability of Ms. Ross outshines Beyoncé by several miles. I'm sure Beyoncé would have been pleased to be the "next" Diana Ross but in the end she never got there. She chose to go another way and I believe it harmed her overall career. I cannot say Beyoncé has no talent for she does however, her shows are smoke and mirrors...while the performances of Diana Ross are one woman with a wonderful voice and putting her music across to every race, creed and ethnicity imaginable. That and a microphone is all she needs. Yes, she is glamorous and also wraps herself in it but that magic "IT" is always there and knows no bounds. The glamour is a bonus but it comes down to the voice, the presentation and a delightful personality that holds her audiences in thrall. Ms. Ross has that in abundance! Yes, it is another time and place however, the choices one makes dictate the future you will have. Beyoncé cannot EVER hope to fill those shoes and I doubt she will ever fulfill the dreams she once had. By the way Stephanie..I still have & play your debut album!

They worked hard, couldn’t even sing on a record until the voice was solidly there unlike today. The words in songs were soft innuendo today blatant. Different times, different everything. Those ladies and all that talent in those days should never be placed in today’s talent. Although many are still working because they didn’t make the big bucks like today and didn’t understand what they were signing away. Nope no comparison original elegance, class, royalty all those ladies including Stephanie Mills. Nothing given, just hard work underpaid!! Let’s not even talk about the racism!
