German castle-palaces are really something you find in fairy tales. Not as sturdy as a real castle but very pretty. Picking 5 top Spanish cities.... oh, oh... not easy, depends on your taste. Well, historical medieval cities of the interior: Toledo, Salamanca, Segovia, Avila and Cuenca (actually having Madrid as your base makes sense here as you can access all of them in one day from there and Madrid is in itself very interesting). If you look for cathedrals: Burgos, Sevilla, León (I can add this one as the top 3 of beautiful cities along with Granada and Córdoba) and the cathedrals in the cities mentioned above. Those with nature around... you have much more of that in America already. But these are just snowflakes on top of the iceberg. I am still travelling around in Spain discovering corners. Study the posible connections of bullet trains, we have the best capillarity in Europe, actually.

That spooky thing you saw in Valencia is a falla, a temporary wood and papier maché monument. They work the whole year to build them in their workshops, they "plant" them in street crossings on march 15th and burn them at midnight march 19th. It's one of the biggest festivities in Spain. There are some 400 of those monuments all around the city, some simpler, some more complex, depending on the budget each commision has. The 6-8 biggest ones cost around half a million each. Tourism on those five days compensates the cost. We get over a million people from all around the world who come to enjoy the massive fireworks, twice per day, the food, the monuments, concerts, party all night... To me, top five cities in Spain is a really tough question. Barcelona, San Sebastián, Granada, Cáceres, and Salamanca come to my mind today. Tomorrow I could give you a quite different list. Five minor places I think are a must: Combarro, Sos del Rey Católico, Almagro, Setenil de las Bodegas, and Peñíscola. And Albarracín, I have to give you six, sorry. Five castles: Loarre, Alcázar de Segovia, Olite, Sigüenza (you can sleep there, it's a very good hotel), and Olvera. Five cathedrals: Burgos, Zaragoza (two cathedrals on the same plaza, I like better La Seo than El Pilar), León, Sevilla, and Santiago de Compostela. Five natural wonders: mount Teide, Ordesa National Park, Picos de Europa, Lagunas de Ruidera, and Geoda de Pulpí. My eyes are weeping from making this lists so short. I could be typing place names all night long. I've been to 47 of our 54 capital cities, plus hundreds of towns all around the country, and I can tell you it's an infinte country. You can't get a grasp of it if you don't live here and travel a lot.
I spent three months in Valencia, Spain last fall for a study abroad and it completely changed my life. I was able to visit Madrid, Granada, Tarragona, Sagunto, Castellón de la Plana, and plenty of small towns outside of Valencia. My mom and I actually spent two weeks in Castellón before my classes began and it's safe to say that we're now actively planning to relocate and pursue dual citizenship!
Those "spooky looking" statues at 10:00 are called "fallas". Large sculptural structures (50, 60 or 80 feet high) made of wood and papier-mâché through the year and depicting events, popular characters, etc of that year. Dozens if not hundreds are built in the city (some larger and some more modest) in each neighborhood and they compete for originality, humor, and spectacularity. They are often satirical (hence the caricaturesque appearance of some "dolls") and one night in March they are set on fire until they are reduced to ashes and thus exorcise all the bad things that happened that year. And the next day they begin work on the ones that will be burned next year...

Madrid Royal Palace only took 18 years to be built with the best architects and stonemasons. From 1738 to 1756. Not medieval times, they had a lot of resources in XVIII century. White House took some initial 8 years (1792-1800) and was not much more recent. It took another 15 years to be finally restored (1814-1829) after the 1812 war against the British.

As someone from the province of Zaragoza, im still waiting for someone to appreciate the beautiful city of Zaragoza. No one does and its the 4th most populated city in Spain and most people who do stopped there in a train travel from Barcelona to Madrid and vice versa.
This is by no means a fair depiction of what Spain has to offer. Maybe it's an acceptable suggestion for the typical tourist, but feels like saying Stephen King is a fair example of what literature is. Barcelona is much more than La Sagrada Familia. Valencia is waaaaay more then the Arts and Sciences City (specially the old city). I've been at El Prado just once. I realized one would need months to see just what's in there. I have the same feeling after seeing that.

Personally my favourite city to visit and stay 1 day walking around is Toledo. But never go in Summer. Is an oven. Last time I bought a tourist pass that allow you visit 7 historic buildings (12€) and later I eat a very nice "daily menu" and only cost me 10 euros. Just walking around and while visiting those places was a nice "medieval" experience. I've been in Toledo 3 times. If you like Roman stuff between Toledo and Cuenca there are the ruins of "Segobriga" (6€). It's small place but have a little of everything about romans, it's well preserved and was not very crowdy. We made a picnic with the roman ruins as landscape. Was really nice. Also I recommend to visit in spring.
In a hypothetical case some foreign tourist wanted to do a 5 week trip to Spain staying as a central base in 5 different cities this would be my recomendation (I've chosen 5 locations with tottally different landscape, activities, architecture and gastronomy): 1) Oviedo 2) Toledo 3) Cadiz 4) Granada 5) Girona

I'm obviously biased because I live in Santiago (Galicia) but it's a great city. I'm sure you'd love the cathedral. And the octopus here is very traditional and delicious haha. 🤩🤩

8:32 If you ever go to Spain, try "pulpo a la gallega" (galician style octopus). It's really good. The best is in Galicia, for obvious reasons (although you can find good quality galician style octopus in many places all over Spain, if you know where to go).
On the theme of cities to visit, all these are worth seeing, but so are many others. An advantage of Madrid is that you can spend 3 or 4 days in the city and then visit Avila, Segovia and Toledo which can be day trips. You should try the octopus, might be surprised. By the way, nothing wrong with steak, we have plenty of quality beef too. You might not be old enough to remember the tv add with Andy Grifith saying "A1 and Steak, nothing better in the whole wide world". P.S. no sauce needed if the beef is first class! Regards

The video is quite bad, for example, in Seville it doesn't show you the cathedral, and the Seville cathedral is the largest Gothic-style cathedral in the world. It also doesn't show you the ruins of Italica, which were also the setting for Game of Thrones, or the Plaza de España, where Star Wars was filmed, for example. In Granada the same: it doesn't show the interiors of the Almabra, which is the second most visited monument in the country, or its cathedral, which is impressive. But it does show Sierra Nevada, which isn't really in the city. It's a video that doesn't show even half of what each city has. Spain is the second country in the world with the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites, with +95 million tourists in 2024, it is the second most visited country in the world, and it will probably be the first in 2025, exceeding 100 million.
The video of the 5 cities is quite poor because doesn't show a big variety of images. And, precisely, many of their main landmarks do not even appear, or at least it doesn't give the amount of time required to see them thouroughly
The small city of Cáceres, in Extremadura, a region in the southwest of Spain, has a historic center that is a world heritage site; many scenes from the Game of Thrones series have been filmed there.
In Spain we don't have many castles (well, we do but many are in ruins and others were destroyed centuries/ years ago). Also, perhaps they are not as beautiful as they are in other countries, with the exception of the castle of Segovia which is beautiful, but we do have many cathedrals and they are beautiful.

If you're into castles, maybe you'll enjoy Mount St. Michel and Neuschwanstein. Not that both play the same league but they are awesome. There are some 2500 castles just in Spain (es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anexo:Castillos_de_Espa%C3%B1a) so, go figure... You might want to look for the Loire Route in France. Even "castle" means maybe too many different things.

La Granja de San Ildefonso is near Segovia, but it's an different town.

Yo te recomendaría Santiago de Compostela y Burgos(por sus impresionantes catedrales y barrios antiguos) Madrid (por su palacio real,sus plazas y sus museos), Granada (por la Alhambra, considerada una de las 8 maravillas del mundo) y como sólo pides cinco, no puedo dejar de recomendarte visitar mi cuidad, Valencia, su catedral, la basílica, la iglesia de San Nicolas y el palacio del marqués de dos aguas

for the beaches question: some places like benidorm are stacked but the beach where i spend my holidays is closer to the málaga one in population density
The video is quite bad, for example, in Seville it doesn't show you the cathedral, and the Seville cathedral is the largest Gothic-style cathedral in the world. It also doesn't show you the ruins of Italica, which were also the setting for Game of Thrones, or the Plaza de España, where Star Wars was filmed, for example.
In Granada the same: it doesn't show the interiors of the Almabra, which is the second most visited monument in the country, or its cathedral, which is impressive. But it does show Sierra Nevada, which isn't really in the city.
It's a video that doesn't show even half of what each city has. Spain is the second country in the world with the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites, with +95 million tourists in 2024, it is the second most visited country in the world, and it will probably be the first in 2025, exceeding 100 million.

The video of the 5 cities is quite poor because doesn't show a big variety of images. And, precisely, many of their main landmarks do not even appear, or at least it doesn't give the amount of time required to see them thouroughly

They are not bats, they are birds belonging to the crow family, they are somewhat smaller.
In Spain we don't have many castles (well, we do but many are in ruins and others were destroyed centuries/ years ago). Also, perhaps they are not as beautiful as they are in other countries, with the exception of the castle of Segovia which is beautiful, but we do have many cathedrals and they are beautiful.
Yeah, we have ONLY more than 20.000 constructions, not many castles🤦♂

If you're into castles, maybe you'll enjoy Mount St. Michel and Neuschwanstein. Not that both play the same league but they are awesome. There are some 2500 castles just in Spain (es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anexo:Castillos_de_Espa%C3%B1a) so, go figure... You might want to look for the Loire Route in France. Even "castle" means maybe too many different things.
