"Wales is sometimes called the "castle capital of the world" because of the large number of castles in a relatively small area. Wales had about 600 castles, of which over 100 are still standing, either as ruins or as restored buildings. The rest have returned to nature, and today consist of ditches, mounds, and earthworks, often in commanding positions. Many of the sites in Wales are cared for by Cadw, the Welsh government's historic environment service.
The four castles of Beaumaris, Caernarfon, Conwy, and Harlech together make up the Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd World Heritage Site, considered to be the "finest examples of late 13th century and early 14th century military architecture in Europe"." - Wikipedia

The Cardiff footage was just plain weird! It should also go without saying that the pronunciation of most of those castle names was absolutely nothing like the real pronunciation. That's the problem with AI generated voice. Not that many non-Welsh people would get the pronunciation right anyway, but real people often make a better go at it. What's the deal with Edward I? Sore point for the Welsh. An arrogant Norman king who decided he wanted to subjugate the Welsh people, and that's why most of those castles were built. They are monuments to oppression. On the plus side, I like to think of Edward I looking up at us from hell, seething with anger as we use the castles he built to generate tourist income for the Welsh economy - we're still here more than 740 years since he tried to eradicate us. Incidentally, when you asked that question, the video was showing Criccieth Castle. That one, and the one before, Carreg Cennen, were both native Welsh castles, rather than English castles in Wales. For "beautiful" castles, I think the best one in Wales would probably be Castell Coch. Most castles across the UK are ruined because they were specifically part-demolished after the Englsh Civil War in the 17th century so that they could no longer be used as fortifications, so you won't find too many in the "beautiful" category.

There are over 600 castles in Wales. Cardiff Castle is in the centre of the city of Cardiff the video showed a lot of the city centre with a couple of glimpses of the castle which was why you had trouble actually spotting it. Most of the castles will be like these but in various conditions (that is some of them are more of a ruin than others). He picked some good ones for the video. Caerphilly and Pembroke are good although Pembroke is in South West Wales not South East Wales like he said. His pronunciation was terrible throughout as well. A more gothic looking castle in Wales is Castell Coch just north of Cardiff. Castell Coch translates to Red Castle in English. I guess if you planned it right you could do a castle tour taking in a number of castles in one day.

Great video, Wales is beautiful (I'm biased though). The courtyards sometimes housed locals and their businesses in them, I think. The castles were long regarded as a symbol of English oppression but now they are part of Wales and we love them (the castles that is ;) ) Yes you are correct, those places in Cardiff are in completely different places!! Cardiff Castle was a Roman fort, you can still see the original Roman stonework on the fortifications. Castell Coch north of Cardiff was only built in the 19th century but it looks like a fairytale castle. Worth a look.

Every country in Europe has medieval castles to offer. The castles in Wales are very impressive. More impressive than those in Germany. If you like castles, you should skip Germany. Because if you're honest, the only three good castles in Germany are: Neuschwanstein, Hohenzollern, Burg Eltz. Nothing more...really not much compared to other countries in Europe. Carcassonne in France is very impressive.

Interesting how your first impression was negative, since most Americans tend to love Spain, and the number of elders that are coming to retire here is increasing. The biggest cultural shock that I had in America was the politeness there, but for me it was not that, it was fake political correctness, I felt like everybody was fake. Here people are direct, it doesn't mean that we are rude or mean, we are actually very friendly and extrovert in general (not in the North of Spain), it's waaaaay different. But when I've spoken with Americans here, they've told me that people being real it's more refreshing. And the bull it's killed at the end of a bullfight yeah. They are not killed in the races (in general, since it's different everywhere).

Saw your video recently. Nice reaction. Most people would suggest big cities in Germany, well there are some u have to visit, but to be honest, I think the smaller ones are also very interesting. For example Cochem. Absolutely stunning. Rothenburg, also nice to see. Dresden is the biggest one I suggest. I know, that's only three cities. But they are worth a visit. And the best states to visit are Thuringia, Bavaria and Swabia, just my opinion😁😉

According to the Spanish Association of Friends of Castles, there are currently 10,342 castles inventoried in Spain. However, it is estimated that there are actually more than 20,000 castles throughout the country. The reason there are so many castles isThe Reconquista: During the approximately 800 years that the Reconquista lasted (711-1492), the Christian kingdoms of the north fought to recover the lands controlled by the Muslims and internal wars. Where I live, in the southeast of Spain in the province of Alicante, each town has its castle.

Spanish castles were not built to be beautiful but to be strong and safe. Castile got its name due to the sheer number of castles that had to be built there in order to secure the flat steppe of the Duero and Tagus river valleys. There are now still over 2000 of them, most in ruins. Ferdinand and Isabella ordered their towers and walls to be downsized or demolished so that feudal lords could not use them in an eventual rebellion against the kings. What we can see nowadays is only an approximation to what they were originally like in the XVth century. The video you are reacting to is sadly disappointing as the author seems to have chosen the worst views of all those wonderful buildings. In particular, Peñafiel is portrayed basically as a dilapidated stone hut (the images DO NOT correspond to the actual castle), whereas it is an awe-inspiring fortress visible from miles away that is in excellent shape for its age. Climbing to the keep is an absolute must. I would recommend watching this vid on the Loarre castle ua-cam.com/video/OMtM4g9A7mc/v-deo.html and this on the castillo de Villena: ua-cam.com/video/_YPYnHEpqP4/v-deo.html . Castillo de Almodóvar del Río: ua-cam.com/video/boPfqzbrWkc/v-deo.html . Castillo de Coca: ua-cam.com/video/aaEQxq3oJy0/v-deo.html . Also check out this one about the real, enormous Peñafiel castle: ua-cam.com/video/LCmHG2uYHGg/v-deo.html Peñafiel was never stormed successfully, but there is a saying about it which showcases the abundance and quality of castles in Castile: "Buen castillo es el de Peñafiel / si no tuviera a ojo el de Curiel" = "Peñafiel is a fine castle, but Curiel (castle) is too close to it". Sorry for the long comment. Keep up the good work :-)

Hi, about the castle build....look for Guédelon on UA-cam. They build a castle in the process from the 12th century. Without any todays technical help. The architectural pattern is provided by the architectural canon of the 12th and 13th centuries in force at the time of Philip II, the French king from 1180 to 1223, with the standard of fortress architecture ordered by the king. Construction began in 1997 and the castle was scheduled for completion in 2023; the target is now around 2030. You can also visit this Gem of experimental archeology. best regards from germany

this video is bad. i mean the list is good. but the pictures are bad and sometimes just a bad angle. the one with the arabs has nothing to do with the castles. its just a bad AI generated video. the castles in switzerland are usualy small, because the people were poor. the luxary you will not find in this military battlements but in the guild houses of the cities. the nobility was kicked out of the country from 1200 on to 1400. thats why most of the castles are older. after that they build luxury guild houses. switzerland is an unusual case in europe. till now.

About the plants being green: A lot of the plants and trees in Central/Western Europe and the Mediterranean really have a real visceral vibrant green color to them. I always wondered why that is the case, and why it is so different in most of the USA. One of my first memories of Germany was taking a taxi (all the taxis where Mercedes-Benz, which was also quite the difference) after getting out of the Frankfurt airport and shooting over the Autobahn, at what felt like lightspeed at the time, and the trees on either side being so intensely green. Of course when we got close to the destination we were driving over a bridge and I saw a huge castle in the distance. I knew I had to see it, but that had to wait for the next day.

14:00 I dare to disagree: building a castle today wouldn't be that much different than it was back then. Just think about it. The walls have to be built by hand, stone by stone, there are no machines to help the bricklayer. In fact, almost all of our houses in Europe are still built this way today. The roof truss consists of beams that a carpenter has to make individually for each building. Yes, there are power saws, but a few skilled men are almost as quick. Today, scaffolding is made of steel tubes that are put together like Lego bricks in no time at all. But my own father built the scaffolding for our house in a day or two with a few friends and thin tree trunks and boards that were lying around. Then we have the plaster - just as it has been for hundreds of years: you have to apply it by hand with a trowel. Yes, the mortar is made with an electric mixer, but even that can be done by a couple of men with shovels directly on the ground. My father used to do it himself for smaller quantities. Oh yes, and the modern fired bricks that we use today - ok, they come by truck from a company. But you know what, the little cow village in Bavaria where I grew up has a monastery that was founded in 753 AD. And the monastery still has a huge kiln where bricks have been fired for hundreds of years using clay from the other side of the village stream. (Today a car enthusiast has housed his collection of vintage cars there.) And did you notice that these old castles were built with stones, but not hewn stones, but as they found them in their fields. You should really look for the video about Guédelon in France, where they are currently building a medieval castle from scratch. It's all patience and sweat, which people had enough of in the Middle Ages. PS: On the question of light: in Germany, the sun rises at 4 a.m. in summer and sets at 10 p.m. - enough time for a lot of work, don't you think?

@@Average_Middle_Aged_American Yes, Americans who come as tourists or move here are regularly surprised and amazed by our long days and especially the long evenings. The downside, of course, is that we only have daylight from 8am to 4pm in winter. 😭 But we've learned to cope with dark, gloomy winters in our well-insulated, well-heated, cozy homes with a hot cup of mulled wine, a candle or even a fireplace or tiled stove. Just the right time to read our children a gruesome Brothers Grimm fairy tale or tinker with the model train. 🤪 PS: Mind you, Munich would be right between Seattle and the US-Canadian border on the 49th parallel, if pushed to the west!! Most of Germany (and the UK) would be in Canada's wilderness.

Don’t worry, steaks ARE available in Germany 😉. In generally, Wolters’ video shows traditional food but there are lots of other options. For example, i am German and my breakfast is just green tea and no food. It’s accepted by other people and if i ever want it, i can go to a restaurant and have a breakfast buffet with all that the video shows and additional scrambled eggs, bacon and pancakes😇

In Spain, it is estimated that currently more than 20,000 castles still stand in different conditions of conservation. Some of them are private property, some are property of the state.

Today you can build a skyscraper in 2-3 years, but in the 10th century for example it took at least 30 years to have a keep strong enough and easy to defend against a siege. Over the years (centuries) a wall was built and more structures were added, chapel, stables, houses for the servants and soldiers, a blacksmith's shop, etc. and they did all that with what they had, ingenuity, brute force and the blessing of their lord and the church. There was only a salary for the master carpenters and stonemasons, the architect being the best paid of them all, for the labourer not even a penny, having a grateful stomach was better than nothing.

Algunas imagenes del castillo de Peñafiel no se corresponden con la realidad y las reales no muestran el castillo en su totalidad y no le hacen justicia.

At one point, there were over 10,000 castles documented in Spain! While that number nowadays has been cut down to 2,500

Peñafiel Castle was mistaken. Those were some ruins, not the castle itself, its nickname is Castilla's Ship because it is long and pretty thin

Our language Spanish is indeed original from Castile and we call It castellano or español. The former Kingdom of Castile was named precisely because of the large amount of Castles. Castillo = Castle.

Hold on man, Spain is also a normal country! I was thinking about inviting you to ice cold beer and tapas when you come to Spain, but now I'm rethinking the issue. 🤣🤣🤣 By the way, I know that town, It's Nerja, a wonderful place to live unless for the rent prices.
