  • Sometimes the lesser known, smaller cities and towns can be the best places to practice street photography as it really forces you to observe and be creative to come away with interesting shots. In this video I head to Gloucester and experiment with reflections, sub-framing and layering to capture some great street photographs. All shots in this video taken with the X-T2 and 50mm f2 lens.

    Hi Tim. Just subbed. I've also been starting on 'reflective' photography, too for 2024: It's a good warm-up exercise when starting street photography. I have been really inspired by the photo book, 'Forever Saul Leiter'. I love abstraction, too, and agree with your observations in choosing shots...All the best.

    Your work is defo high quality. I’m only subscribed to about 8 UA-cam photographers because most of the channels feature gear obsessed, hand and mouth flapping dimwits obsessed with sharpness, fast autofocus, and effing bokeh. Photography as art is anathema to them. Your Morocco photos were great as well!

    • @timjamiesonphotos
      @timjamiesonphotos  Рік тому +1

      Thanks a bunch, Jason! Really appreciate that. Definitely want to steer my channel away from the gear type stuff. Is tempting to do a what’s in my bag/gear type video as I know a lot of people like content like that but it’s not really what I’m interested in - will see how the channel evolves 🙏🏻

    • @JasonGreensides
      @JasonGreensides Рік тому +2

      A what’s in my bag video (or any gear video for that matter) could be good if you relate it to specific photos you’ve taken. It’s when UA-camrs go on about gear then don’t show a single image or show a few photos at the end that they put onscreen for 0.5 seconds.. haha. All the very best with the channel!

    Hi Tim, another great little video. I live in the beautiful little town of Whitstable, which is great for photography in general. Was going to add that shot at 13:17 really reminded me of an expression that it is not the farmers job for a crop to grow, but to merely provide the right conditions.
      Sort of in line with your comment about "creating your own luck", where getting yourself into the right place with some patience results in these amazing pay offs.

    Quality post, Tim. Reflections primary theme w/useful commentary and pics. Unique tip about curious onlookers who become image subjects.
    Framing pics shop gate and bench my fav. 4th gate reflection w/centered subject works well, IMO, but others in the series too busy - eyes wander in search of focal point, if that makes sense.
    Would help, IMO, if photos were numbered😊.
    Had to increase vid volume to almost max to hear you - not so with other channels, so perhaps there’s something you can do at your end to remedy.
    Suggestion: to increase search-related views and potential subscribers, add one or more hashtags topside in description (like #streetphotography, #Fuji. Cheers!

    Just subscribed because I can find so much value in your video!! Thanks for the great content.
    I was wondering how much distance to the glass you are using and which focal length because I have a very hard time recreating these shots (just went out and tried it without much success). I think 35mm is a bit too short and 50 or even 85mm could be better focal length.
    Another question was if you use autofocus because for me the camera was often focusing on the letters not the persons even with just a small focus point. So I used a high F stopp to get everything sharp and also focused manually as good as i could. But it seams you are using the autofocus in all your shots. Do you have some special setting (focus limiter) for the focus? It looked like you are using the smallest focus point possible.
    Thanks for your help
    Jens

      Hey! Thanks for your lovely comment. When I do reflection shots I use single point auto focus, and experiment with aperture as well (I don’t care about grain, so will always raise the ISO to get the correct exposure once I’ve decided which aperture to use.) reflections are fun because you can just get creative with it and it’s all about experimenting. I tend to use a 50mm (full frame equivalent) for reflection shots as it compresses the scene a bit more than a wider focal length. Will do a full video about this in the future.

    • @timjamiesonphotos
      @timjamiesonphotos  Рік тому +1

    when shooting reflections in particular, what settings do you use and what focus system please. and i guess you use single AF on your subject, but do you find that the focus wants to wander and try to focus on the foreground (when the foreground is out of focus intentionally)

    • @timjamiesonphotos
      @timjamiesonphotos  Рік тому +1

      Hey! I tend to use single AF on my reflection shots as sometimes I want to focus on the reflection itself and other times I want to focus on something through the reflection. Probably better to manual focus though as that gives more control but it’s too slow a process for me :)
