- Keep in mind, an average run of Buccaneer Beach is about 7-9 minutes long. Really goes to show just how much there is to the momentum, movepool and level interaction.
Inb4, I get comments saying "it's easy to fly over everything... I practiced 2 hours or so to get this run (with a lot of room for improvement) and a dedicated speedrunner just got a time below 2 minutes. Yeah...

If you want to see an even crazier run, check out this video from Themimik:

Thank you for mentioning me, you are so goated for that
@@themimik3277 Dude, I can tell you put a lot of time and effort into your speedruns, even learned stuff to do here that I wouldn't even considered on my own. Least I could do is get some of my audience to see Rollin Rascal's true speedrunning potential, as well as your cool speedruns.
The "fly over everything" complaint has always been a pretty flimsy critique to me cause it feels like people watching a video like this and assuming it's just something you do when like most games that have skill based mechanics in them, it always looks easy until you actually try it.
To me it looks fun, it encourages character expression from every player. It's not like you have to do this, people with these complaints just don't know how to have fun and should just go play God of War if they want a more grounded experience
@@derple8524Remember when GOW had a jump button and actual platforming?
I still think the Norse GOW games are good games in their own right but man, does it regress in some aspects gameplay-wise...
Devil's Advocate: A lot of Sonic fangames to which the "fly over everything" complaint applies tend to have at least one of two key issues: Sonic being floaty and having an extremely overpowered and vertically oriented moveset, and/or level design which outright encourages that level of extreme physics abuse. The Rascal dev's previous game, Sonic GT, ended up being somewhat of a "fly over everything" game which sucked because the level design, when played "normally", was quite good. Rascal isn't as vertically oriented compared to GT Sonic and seems to be a bit heavier, and basically every single level element can be harnessed to top up his momentum - this run and its liberal enemy riding being a good example. The developers seem to have finally found a balance between character power, difficulty and level design, and I love to see it.
I feel like having a charecter be overpowered and not a bit grounded is what a some fan games tend fall into and it's only really Sonic GT and Sonic Frontiers that I see this issue with.
@@chronoblue418In Sonic Frontiers' case, initially Sonic was underpowered, it's only Update 1 of Sonic Frontiers that added "Jump Deceleration" which most keep at 0, which really destroys what challenge there was in the open zone.
@@chronoblue418Recently the dev of GT said he made those levels specifically to avoid that kind of complaint. Big leaps doesn't mean you're skipping everything, especially since the level size and shape and gimmick placement accounts for all of that.
Holy crud this game looks like a heck of a lot of fun.
It is, and the demo's readily available by the way ;)
@@bunnywithmonocle5324 I happened to play it a few hours ago and it was just like everyone said: really freaking fun.
I love that this game isn't afraid to let players be free. Sega couldn't otherwise their game would break lol
It's not that their game would break, it would be that they would have made a good game and doing that might make SEGA explode. Also need to remember where to but the blame at, it's Sonic Team not SEGA making most of the games.
I'm glad that the way they went about addressing the "fly over 80% of the level" criticism GT had was to make the level design more immediately conducive to that sort of gameplay rather than gimping the feel of the character.
your always gonna hear a sonic fan say "you just jump over the level" as a cheap way to down play the games like this. people just need to just play the f`ing game.
If that's who is complaining then I'll ignore them. It's funny how they say Sonic's games nowadays are amazing yet come to trash on all these other games like what? We finally got what we wanted and we're getting dogged on by these fans for wanting a "fun" game. It's the same thing with Palworld. I swear those two franchises are so alike. Rushed games, and toxic fanbases. Thank God we have games like Spark the Electric Jester 3, Penny's Big Breakaway, Pepper Grinder, and Freedom Planet 2. I get to play actual good speedy platformers, kinda since I can't play Spark or rascal. But I still got the other ones so I'm good, and I still got Sonic Mania and Freedom Planet as well
Sonic fans that use this bitching as a complaint aren't true sonic fans but only started at Frontiers where cyberspace holds your hand the whole time playing it and makes it very boring with shitty dubstep playing (Its the only sonic game I've ever turned music off because it has my least favorite genres) whereas adventure and these fan games allow you to actually learn the level at your own pace and do what you want, something real sonic fans would appreciate
@@derple8524
I Had no idea pepper grinder existed until now, thanks for putting on my radar, looks pretty cool
@@SonicAdventureEnjoyer true sonic fans?? Mfer i don't need to be a true to say that sonic GT was boring.
Finally good balance of physics and level design
I'll try this, looks fun
Imagine a Sonic game like this.
Man this looks so fun, I wish I could play this but like many other fan games I can't. But I'm happy I still get to see what I've always wanted in a speed base platformer
Why can't you play it?
Very neat
The map is so well made to suit the momentum given even when speedrunning.
must've been one heck of an update, gotta try it out later
'mazin' run
2’34 is a great time for only 2 hours of grinding, great job
I feel like, if i hadn't entered into the sonic community my mind wouldn't be so reyective about these sonic-adventure inspired fangames that look cool.
When I was on rails I kept thinking of how spark does it and idk if they follow that rule or the og game rule. I feel weirdly slow on rails sometime based on speed approach
Can't fly over everything if the level is vertically oriented 👉🏿😎
(Titanic Tower from Spark 2 moment)
Another momentum game this is just infinity engine +.. with a reskin
I honestly don't like it that much, but it looks alright to me play a bit
I've always wondered how you spindash in midair
Or "rev up" whatever you wanna call it
LT + mash X then press A to launch forward midair
Is wall running an option?
Sadly no wall running, unless you go on a spline, otherwise only wall jumping
Honestly for an average run, I do think this level is a bit too long for beginners/first-time playthroughs, also rails are dumbed down to basically being modern sonic (though this may be subject to change)
Other than that, I like what has been shown off from this demo. I love the overall aesthetic of this level, some good exaggerated beaches for a silly 3d cartoony platformer. Though there's some immediate stop then go sections, the movement is very freeflowing and overall nice to control I feel.
I understand where some "Oooohhh you can just fly over the stage" complaints come from but some games I don't think it makes sense (cough cough Spark), the most flying shit is literally preformed by people who have around 60+ hours of playtime in stages and are dedicated to go faster.
Too long? If anything the level is on the shorter size...
send this to Curiomatic.
I see you've been studying their shorts and gameplay videos as well
