  • E487: A sort of Amiga Short : While at the WOC 2023 show myself and several others picked up the blank shell cases from the C1581 floppy disks. The 1581 was a Commodore64/128 3.5" disk drive. These however were just cases. I show my plans to convert this to an Amiga floppy disk for external use. these drives originally came with Chinon FB354 DS/DD drives, the same used in Amigas

Wow that brought back some memories in that a friend who owned a Used Computer Store had an Amiga 500 return because the Floppy Drive did not work, and a new replacement drive was on the expensive side for him so he asked me about where he could get a Floppy Drive since was unable to use a PC Drive. I sold him the drive out of a 1581 and kept everything else so he was happy, his customer was happy, and I was happy to have spare parts to keep my other 1581's working. Now that was at the time before I knew how to convert a PC Drive to work on an Amiga. All I knew was the drives were interchangeable. Back then I would buy and sell used Commodore Equipment and unlike Commodore which gave you a 90-day warranty I always gave a 1-year warranty because I had so much stuff it was just easier to swap failed devices with working one device.

I did similar with a 3D printed 1581 case and a home brew pcb, and Sony mpf-900 drive

Actually the 1581 was used more or less with the C128. People used them with their BBS's. One drive you should keep an eye out for Chris is called the Mini Chef. It was a 1571 modified that had also had a mini-scribe 20 or 40MB hard drive inside. There were switches on the drive that would either max X number of individual 1571 floppy partitions on the HDD, or make one big partition.

Yeah, I had one with my C128. Was a good little machine.

I have 2 1581’s from my 128 days, I might unbox them someday and see if they work. GEOWORKS? Let’s pull up some old files!

Cool looking drive, looks like a cousin of the A1010 and A1011, which I guess it really is!

Probably not, commodore 1581’s we’re like the 1571 drives, brains and such… 1010 was basically a bare drive with cable pass through to the computer. And Amiga ownership and Atari ownership shenanigans made a bunch of crazy stuff in 85…

Im the kinda weirdo that would retrofit the guts of that box with RPI stuff. It does remind me I found a batch of old floppies in my garage whilst uncovering my 3 Amigas , I doubt the data on those magenetics is good
