Childhood nostalgia. Loved watching this every Friday after coming back from school. I do agree, I was bored too the death during the island arc.
I think everyone else was pretty bored by those episodes as well. Rest of the show was amazing though!

It was one of the most popular anime in Italy in the 90's. It brings me back when I was a kid!!

I ended up buying this a few years ago based off of vague memories of having seen one episode of the Finnish dub that nobody I asked about was aware of existing as a kid. The Ghibli influences are so obvious to me now, the machinery and the beauty of nature are both totally Miyazaki.
First time I've heard about a Finnish dub as well. That is very true, apparently Miyazaki used aspects of the concept in both Future Boy Conan and Laputa: Castle in the Sky (now that I recall, I can very clearly see the comparison between Nadia and Laputa).
@@Immortallium For more Victorian era machinery, Miyazaki's work on Sherlock Hound also applies.
A good review. Thank you. I am a big fan of the show myself. The character development and music along other elements were done with love. There was a fan edit made in 2020 in order to convert the 39 episodes to three movies, celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the series. The fan edit worked on removing unneeded fillers and more. Island Arc was treated in an interesting way as well, which made this show flawless finally. There are two versions of it, the first using the English Dub (Which, I personally prefer for many reasons) and the other used the first but used the Japanese Dub with subtitles.

Interestingly there are some Ghibli connections with this show. Hideaki Anno animated the God Warrior in Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and the concept for this show was developed by Hayao Miyazaki.

Fun fact: The ADV dub had actual children voicing the three child characters: Nathan voiced Jean at age 12, Meg voiced Nadis at age 14, and Margaret voiced Marie at age 11.

Also, CLAMP's manga Tokyo Babylon is getting a full anime adaptation in 2021. It's coming next year (2021).
Hope they redo X since many fans were left unsatisfied due to hiatus.

I confess that I had never heard of the show (although I do find it funny that tvtopes stresses that the show is not Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water). The comparison does seem quite appropriate since Secret of Cerulean Sand is also inspired by Jules Verne novels.
"Japanese dub" over the original Japanese voices?
It's been a while so I can't quite remember this context. I remember that I liked the Japanese audio more than the English audio for Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water. If it's because I used the term "Japanese Dub" (I can't remember if I did), that might be because anime has the animation done first with the Japanese voice actors brought in later to dub over the animation. Not every anime does this (if I recall correctly Akira didn't for instance) but most do so I do use the term Japanese dub sometimes. I know most people refer to it as "subs" and I should probably try sticking to that term as well to reduce confusion but I do find myself referring to it as "Japanese Dub" from time to time. If you were talking about something else, as I said before it's been a while since I did this video so I might not be remembering something, let me know and I'll do my best to answer it.
