Yes, thanks! For a short moment I was thinking of deciding between these 2 cars! Well, I didn’t find this video before I made my decision: I chose Crosstrek😀😍😍👍
I sold my Subaru XV Crosstrek two weeks ago ago and got a 2020 Rav4. Why? The Subaru engine reliability issues, high servicing charges and bad service from my local Subaru dealer. Couldn’t be happier
john b mine was a rebuild as well with a 2 year warranty from Subaru. My advice is to sell it once the rebuild is done. The car will never be the same, has a high failure rate so sell, it while it’s worth something
Personally I think the Rav 4 is better but Subaru is not a bad car. They are both reliable and I just love the way the Crosstrek looks. I would pick the Crosstrek, just because I love the look. Also, the mods on it are much better.
I’m surprised more reviews of Subaru’s do not discuss how the AWD of the Subaru is severely negatively impacted by the CVT. This is very important due to the limited number of manuals& not being offered anymore. Also, not only is the impairment of the CVT off-road significant, the impact on the wear & tear of CVT’s when used off-road IMHO should be mentioned.
My wife’s 2013 crosstrek consumes oil like crazy. Only has 73,000 miles and we can’t even drive 1,500 miles without adding a quart of oil to it. We’ve babies this car since new and it’s a headache not to mention terribly uncomfortable seats and harsh ride. Will be trading it for a 2021 Toyota RAV4 very soon. Toyota has never let me down, they are the superior car in my eyes no question. I will never own another Subaru ever again.
I was initially looking for a used 2008-2010 used Rav4. Then I stumbled on the 2014 crosstrek. Same price, 6yrs newer, better fuel economy. Amoung the easiest decisions I've ever made.
From an owner.....before committing to an suv........Subaru offers everything....and more. Solid vehicles, reliable and very good with petrol!........Oh,and the trans.......very smooth and quiet.
Nice review Sammy, looking forward to more of your work. You seem like you could convince Mitsubishi to bring the Montero Sport up north to U.S. I live in NYC and you need an SUV or truck to go off-roading on these horrible concrete roads. I wish the Forester had the options the Crosstrek has, I would bite. I need a replacement for my 2003 Mitsubishi Montero.
Tried both including the RAV 4 Hybrid. In the country the non-hybrid Subaru was better economy than the Hybrid RAV4. and bought the Crosstrek. The build quality and interior and ride of the Crosstrek was much superior. As this is my wife’s car there was no comparison. The Crosstrek was easier to drive and the EYESIGHT is easier to know if it is working. The cameras on the Crosstrek are awesome, better than the 360 deg camera on the RAV4. And there is NO WAY I would take the RAAV4 on the beach through deep shingle and sand like I did the Crosstrek today (with only 250km on the clock)
Actually I am crosshopping these two, CH-R too small and weird, and Forester the New one looks too bulky for my taste.. So good job comparing these two!

I own a Subaru legacy and while in all honesty it was not my first choice because of Subaru's sometimes spotty reliability, That being said I purchased it with a 10 year 100k bumper to bumper extended warranty and I have zero regrets with Subaru's AWD. Not just that, while some Toyota's are more reliable than average it varies across models and the year (ex. Brake recalls in recent Camry's) Not a one size fits all. The only issue I had with my Subaru is a dealer software update that bricked the infotainment system but that was replaced for free. The one issue that Subaru's boxer engines do suffer from is leaks which the powertrain warranty does cover for 5 years 60000 miles, but it's something to be aware of especially for the Forester, outback and crosstrek
The CHR is more comparable to the Crosstrek, but Toyota doesn't offer it in AWD. Perhaps the coming Corolla Cross. The RAV4 is more comparable to the Outback or Forester.
The only reason I'm considering the cross trek is for the manual transmission... it's the opposite for me.... I wish Toyota gave a manual for the Rav 4!
I expect to keep the seats folded, but there is an interesting and obscure observation to be made: I had a '74 Dodge Coronet (marketed as a "midsize" but by EPA total passenger and cargo space a "large" car in those days) in the late '80s, and the Impreza 5-door and Crosstrek (identical numbers) have more passenger space as well as more cargo space with the rear seat up than the Coronet sedan. My 2023 Crosstrek should be at the dealer in April.
Crosstrek will offer hybrid model as well. The point of the video isn't to make RAV4 look inferior, it's mostly to give people an idea in terms of sizes.
is it weird that i am a 19 year old with no intent of have kids soon, that wants a suv like this? i consider myself pretty masculine but at heart want a vehicle like this.
I am getting rid of my Jeep Patriot and hoping to get either of them. My sister and grandpa have crosstreks and I do love the cars, but my in-laws all have Toyota vehicles with 300k+ miles and my dads old sienna had 400k miles so I am on the fence. At this point all I care about is having a car with AC lol my patriot is no ac, crank windows, manual transmission. It sucks so bad in the summer with no ac
What I always miss in reviews is endurance and durability. If I invest in a car I don't care about automatic back doors and other stuff bound to break down. Especially in this segment I want reliability and rigidness. Here comes Subaru in to play. Rav 4 I don't believe will last as the Subaru.
This is not a good comparison. The Rav 4 should be compared to a Forester. Also, price was not even in the discussion. I believe that the,Rav 4 is much more expensive than the crosstrek. Also, what engine was in the crosstrek? If it is,the,2.5, I would take the crosstrek hands down. If it is a,2.0, I would take the Rav 4. The Subaru 2.0 is,as gutless as a snail. I own one, so I do know what I'm talking about. The only way that I would purchase, another 2.0, is if I was going to get it for my kid as,a first car. And it would not be a crosstrek. It would be a impreza.
@@burberryclaretred6676 What's the reason? I've been thinking to get a 2022 MT crosstrek. Just contacted local dealer yesterday and want $3k-5K over msrp if I order one. I will just wait since it will be my 2nd car.

Yeah the trunk space in the Crosstrek is a joke. Forget about shopping for Christmas gifts or shopping at bulk stores if you want to hide stuff in the trunk. The trunk is so small that you wont be able to store much and still be able to pull the cargo cover closed to hide your stuff. Also forget about taking a trip where you need to pack a lot of luggage or stuff for a picnic for more than two people and want everything hidden in the trunk. The hybrid version is even worse.
@@dl8704 yeah it's all a matter of perspective and individual needs. But for me I need trunk space and I don't like things sitting in the open. Bigger trunk space means bigger vehicle and that changes the the dynamics of the vehicle. Just wish the battery in the PHEV didn't take up the trunk space though.
We have a tiny Suzuki SX4. We use a Yakima rooftop box for more weatherproof, secure cargo space when we need it. It only costs us about 1MPG on the hwy. It's full-width, and long enough to fit a 6'6" surfboard. A half-width box can leave more rack space and/or a sunroof useable. We also have a folding Harbor Freight trailer that our cars can easily pull. Ours is 1000lb capacity, but HF offers one now that has about 1800lb capacity. I use ours for hauling things like motorcycles, golf carts, ATVs, lumber, 4x8 sheets, soil, sod, masonry, flooring, etc. The hitch also gets used for a 4-bicycle rack. Rooftop cargo bags can roll up small and stow when not in use too. I even saw one that can flatten and stay on the roof when empty. The bags just aren't lockable, and generally aren't as weatherproof as the boxes. It's nice to have many capabilities like a bigger, expensive SUV/pickup and still get 30MPG+, when unladen, without trashing an interior. Many SUVs/pickups don't even have the 1800lb payload capacity of that HF trailer, and replacing the "bed" if it gets badly damaged is usually just the cost of a 4x8 sheet of 1/2"-3/4" plywood.
@@RKmndo yeah, but I don't want to keep a rooftop box on my car all the time or bring attention to me when I travel. Also a little hassle to access the box on top of the roof. Also I don't want to haul a trailer. But it's give and take. I have a Yukon Xl that fits the bill for travel and hauling but nice to have something smaller when I don't need that much space. The Crosstrek is at the other far end of the spectrum when it comes to storage space which is too little for me personally. But I guess for a daily driver or day trips it'll serve my needs mostly for two people and I have my Yukon XL to fall back on if needed. Nephew has a Crosstrek and he is thinking about getting a roof box.

The main reason to avoid the Rav4 is the moose test. Even a Kia Sorento Pig outperforms the actually 'dangerous' Rav4. I do wonder with the Rav4Prim if the result will be different considering the two motor configuration and the much heavier and lower centred battery set. The crosstek performs well enough in the moose test. I should state that Toyota has addressed the issue via software but you have to ask for the update.......... ua-cam.com/video/xSRCJFCmvTk/v-deo.html I would assume that the moose test is now standard and improvements would be passed to the Rav4Prime automatically. I was actually thinking of getting an outback or rav4 next. I do like subarus bold style in suv. Rav4 is a good size and its toyota so definitely reliable
@@chibenji5255 I have 2 Subarus and have no major issues with them. Had one that died at 227k miles, and althoug I wanted it to last 300k, is not that bad considering I bought it used. Now, Toyota is Toyota...
Thanks for the video, i am exactly choosing between this 2 cars! Without having any kids i think xv is the smarter choice.. but the rav its prettier
Good choice!
Yes, thanks! For a short moment I was thinking of deciding between these 2 cars! Well, I didn’t find this video before I made my decision: I chose Crosstrek😀😍😍👍
Thank you for this was stuck between these two!
RAV4 is too big for Japanese roads, and I love Subaru AWD!!
They are sold in the North American market
I sold my Subaru XV Crosstrek two weeks ago ago and got a 2020 Rav4. Why? The Subaru engine reliability issues, high servicing charges and bad service from my local Subaru dealer. Couldn’t be happier
My rod misfired at 87k mi 2013 xv and I'm getting rebuild+ 2 yr warranty on engine
john b mine was a rebuild as well with a 2 year warranty from Subaru. My advice is to sell it once the rebuild is done. The car will never be the same, has a high failure rate so sell, it while it’s worth something
This is the video I have been looking for!!!
I liked this type of review. Nice work!
I would love a new review against the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Limited 2.5L because i think that changes the game even more now
How change game?
@@hermetichector The power difference is very noticeable and moves through trails with more confidence
@@hermetichector new 2.5 liter engine option in the Xtek.
Ah, yes: 2020, when you could get a RAV4 for under $40K, and in less than two years… the good ol’ days.
appreciate the body height comparison for both
Personally I think the Rav 4 is better but Subaru is not a bad car.
There's no turbo in the Subaru naturally aspirated
This is what I came to say lol I have the 6 speed manual I love it
Yes you are correct
don't need it
the 2021 Subaru crosstrek sport has the 2.5 l
Turbos usually put more stress in the engine and ir return engines wear out more rapidly.
2013 crosstrek worse year in crosstreks apparently, no issues with other year models
older rav4 also has terrible oil consumption issues.
I was initially looking for a used 2008-2010 used Rav4. Then I stumbled on the 2014 crosstrek. Same price, 6yrs newer, better fuel economy. Amoung the easiest decisions I've ever made.
This was super helpful, thanks so much.
You're so welcome!
Bought one this week .... Love it!
Which one? 🤔
If you are going to compare a RAV 4 to a Subaru you should compare it to the Forester.
I know, but, not every video should be compared to its competitors. Sometimes doing something different is important.
Actually I am crosshopping these two, CH-R too small and weird, and Forester the New one looks too bulky for my taste.. So good job comparing these two!
@@victorteran9766 thank you. I was cross shopping a Ford Focus RS and C63 AMG S coupe lol I wish someone had made a video. Some audi dealerships have told me, customers compare audi A4 vs Q5 all the time.
Personally I was looking at these 2 different cars and am happy for the comparison. I've wanted a crosstrek since they first came out but I have to say the rav4 is a nice looking ride and was reconsidering when my roommate got one. I think I'm going to go with the crosstrek though
awesome video! it would also be awesome to see what youre looking at while driving (view of dash/front windshield/road) instead of just showing yourself the whole time. many thanks!
Thanks for the idea! I just purchased new cameras, the current 4 new videos have dual views, me and front.
@@SamCarLegion Nice! Keep up the good work.
The Subaru Crosstrek with the seats folded down is 55.7 cubic feet of space. Not 20
I expect to keep the seats folded, but there is an interesting and obscure observation to be made:
I had a '74 Dodge Coronet (marketed as a "midsize" but by EPA total passenger and cargo space a "large" car in those days) in the late '80s, and the Impreza 5-door and Crosstrek (identical numbers) have more passenger space as well as more cargo space with the rear seat up than the Coronet sedan.
My 2023 Crosstrek should be at the dealer in April.
I think a good comparison could be the Crosstrek against the Mazda CX-30. The Rav 4 is more like the Forester and Honda CR-V.
The crosstrek is not turbocharged like you said at 2:50 minutes in. I drive a crosstrek as a daily. Get your facts right my guy.
What about the RAV 4 Hybrid? I costs a couple thousand more, but gets 35-40 MPG and have more horsepower.
Arty not weird at all bud. Buy what you like. You can take that crosstrek anywhere even tune it
dont need to have kids to drive a crossover. I like station wagons like the older 3rd gen outbacks. they just look better then anything else
Every man who must say he's masculine, is not really masculine.
I love the crosstrek styling
A Subaru crosstrek sport just isn't a sport without a manual trans option.
John Banket true that
You can get manual but not on higher trims.Back in 2013 they were offering manual in all trims.I got limited with manual transmission.
When did Christopher Walken start doing car reviews?
Love this review
Thank you
This is not a good comparison.
Yet it has 130k views
I have 35000 miles on my 2019 crosstrek 6 MT. If I have to do it all over again, I would wait for 2021 crosstrek 6MT with extra 30 HP.
@JC Leeson...I don't think the manual will be offered with the 2.5 for 2021. thanks.
I’m thinking of trading in my 2020 MT crosstrek lease ($14,000)and buy in full a rav4 automatic am I making a mistake ?

Honestly I don't trust any CVT from any manufacturer. So Rav4 is King in this comparison
it is not turbo charged
Yes correct. Maybe misspoke
Why did you say they both have the top trim. Limited for rav 4 and premier for crosstrek? That is not the highest trim for crosstrek
Where are u located?
@@SamCarLegion US
In the US the limited is the top trim. So in canada is called premier and us Limited. So is technically the same trim just different term
This guy is gonna get people going to the dealership asking to purchase a turbo charged crosstrek LMFAO!!
They don't fill up with Gas Toyota that is! My 2017 Tacoma had low compression because piston rings were installed wrong from factory!!!!
Crosstrek is not turbocharged
The crosstrek does not come with a turbo, for better or worse.
Yep I caught that too
Not. interested in a turbo. Thanks for pointing out it doesn't. (Suburu). have one. Less power is better for me. anyhow. More power just gets. me into trouble.
U should of compared the crosstrek to the corolla cross I think there more apple to apple 🍎
So the RAV4 does everything better but he still prefers the Subaru. OK.
If you drive them back to back the Subaru is much more fun to drive. But that is just my opinion and I sold Toyota’s.
I tried both and bought a Crosstrek. It was a no-brainer.
if you live in the east coast and will get hit by snow then get a subaru. if you live in the east coast, get a rav 4.
Lmao did i listen crosstrek has a 2 liter turbocharged? Can you please show where the turbo is located?
I found the paddle shift of crosstrek to be very fast.
Did he just say the crosstrek has a 2.0l "turbo" engine? Weird.
❤️SUBARU❤️
You have mentioned crosstrek offered 2.0 liters turbocharged engine?? This is wrong as it is only N.A. engine.
Kevin, Boon Thai Lim yes we know it’s wrong
It will come down to this: space, towing capacity and definitely the price. I would buy the Crosstrek for the manual transmission option
Bigger isn't always better. It's what's practical for the owner.
Since you still own nothing, buy a Suburban
Crosstreks don't come with turbo charged engines.
All wheel drive is stronger in Subaru yes I just don't like cvt something about it is just junky
Two things, cvt unreliability and obligatory head gasket replacements on the subaru. Toyota for the win
The head gasket issues were back in 2012 and years before.
@@danielfair4675 Exactly! and the CVTs in Subarus don't have issues (Nissan is the ones with the problems). People just like to say things without any knowledge.

I'm literally deciding between these two vehicles! Great review
the transmission is a cvt not an automatic transmission
the main feature of both vehicles was not tested: off-road behavior. :-(
So Subaru CVT transmission problems are.not an issue?
Not on the 2020+
It's harder to find manual anyway
11:40 !!! This should be printed on the windshields of all vehicles same as they do with warning on the mirrors "objects in mirror are closer than they appear". Drives me crazy when u drive 100 on the ring road and than someone wants get in like a turtle in front of you
2:52,,,,Lol, 2.0 turbo charged motor? Get the motor right if your doing a comparison. NO TURBO!!!!!
You are honest
The main reason to avoid the Rav4 is the moose test. Even a Kia Sorento Pig outperforms the actually 'dangerous' Rav4. I do wonder with the Rav4Prim if the result will be different considering the two motor configuration and the much heavier and lower centred battery set. The crosstek performs well enough in the moose test. I should state that Toyota has addressed the issue via software but you have to ask for the update.......... ua-cam.com/video/xSRCJFCmvTk/v-deo.html
I would assume that the moose test is now standard and improvements would be passed to the Rav4Prime automatically. (ASSume)

I remember you mentioning it. For me the Crosstrek would be perfect. Enough space and many safety features. I took it uphill in snow yesterday, very capable machine.
@@SamCarLegion Good Review, Subaru is the Audi of Japan, but way cheaper. I had Subarus from 2010 to now , four of them. I love the steering, not too light, I like the weight to it, other than capability, they are very safe, maybe you can use their safety ranking in your next videos. One of the things I always do search before considering a car is the safety ranking, specially when I have other member of my family driving them.
One thing annoys me about Subaru, their CVT, the transmission should be a priority to them. If it had a better transmission would be just perfect. But hey, it offers a 6MT, which I would totally go for.
Sam CarLegion Yes, Cvt is the worse, That is why I did not lease the legacy Xt . Subaru will go out of Business if they don’t offer an automatic transmission, Imagin Cvt in Wrx!😂😂😂
