I tried to learn this with him through the major scale. Now that it is pentatonic and in A I can finally digest it.

This was a very interesting take, I fell into that trap, where I knew the pentatonic shapes and could play them well, but couldn’t wrap my head around how guys like Hendrix and Clapton Jimmy Paige and the like could make such amazing solos in so many different ways. I branched out and started to become more of a diatonic player, which I don’t regret, but it wasn’t until I started playing more diatonic shapes that I finally started to understand the relationships of intervals and how to make them work for me. If I would have focused more on how to make more with less and how the relationships worked so well I probably would have progressed faster, I mean my playing incorporates mainly pentatonic riffs but a lot of my leads fall into adding passing tones from chromatic, diatonic or blues scales, amazing lesson man, you killed it.

My goodness. No wonder Marty plays so good. Dude just changed the way I played in 10 minutes. I was so stuck playing the minor pentatonic and always sounding like I was going up and down to and up and down the scale sounding slightly bluesy but always the same. He opened the door and I'm walking thru it. I'm not a great player but I love to make my own sound. So not playing other people's music has really slowed my learning down but I'm only playing what I play and never being a copy cat. Yes I'm sure that horribly detrimental to my learning but I'm ok with that. Just doing me.

Well in the long run if you were to play with someone, you will be way better at creating / coming up with your own solo's, verses somone who follows the rules. Playing your own style can be beneficial in the sense that you will sound "Natural" where someone who doesn't incorporate learning to be creative, will sound " by the book ", or "Mechanical" if you know what I mean. Keep doing you man!

@@teleacousticplayer9386 Thanks brother. I sure wish I had someone to play with tho. I'm still stuck in the gap of playing chords that sound bland and scales that I just can't seem to find beauty in the sound. It all just sounds bland. But I'll keep trying to find that one thing that gets me out of this rut I'm in.

Don’t think of learning music theory as a way of restricting yourself to what everyone else is doing. It is simply wrong. Instead compare it to a language. Learning to play music without knowing why it works, is like speaking a language without knowing how to write it or knowing grammar. Learning to write and learning the grammar doesn’t limit what you can say or make you say the same as everyone else really. It just lets you express yourself in far more eloquent, coherent, inspiring and interesting ways. Hope that makes sense.

Such a cool concept at the center to see the structure built from 3 core elements. I can see why Marty carried on from Chris’s teachings. Keep rockin’ guys - and teaching!

Yes, thank you, Chris, for your insight, and thank you, Marty, for asking Chris to come on. I know this video is about 1 1/2 yrs. old, but man, this has helped me get out of a rut. I've been working on memorizing the 5 pentatonic shapes, trying to remember where the root notes are in each pattern, and it's been a bit frustrating. I need to understand why something works, then I know how to do it. Sure, muscle memory is important, but knowing how and why something you play works enables you to truly use it. So, thanks again!

I have been teaching myself for about 4 years now and I have to admit I have not practice this like I should have from the beginning. That's a shame on me moment. I promised myself to buckle down on this I just have to work on not being bored with it. Most of the problem is also my muscle memory is not what it used to be. I am almost 60 and I am still amazed that I finally picked up a guitar. This video made me remember that I am not the only one and that yes, I can do this! thank you Marty for always looking out for us and for introducing us to your mentor.🎼🎸

Wow! This just opened the flood gates and things are starting to make sense. I applied the same knowledge on the minor scale and then the major scale. Bam! I can play the minor, major and pentatonic across the entire fretboard now. Now since Ionian - Major, Dorian - Minor raised 6th, Phyrgian - Minor flattened 2nd note, Lydian - Major raised 4th Note, Mixolydian - Major flattened 7th Note, Aeolian - Natural Minor, Locrian - Minor Flattened 2nd & 5th Note. So now I can play all the modes without thinking hard about shapes and patterns. Best lesson ever!

Use flat 3 to root, and use flat 7 to root. Just stay with those two relationships for a few days.

11 - (or 4) sounds like it wants to go up to 5 or down to b3

Perfect for what I need to go over today. For years I've just done seven notes all the time, playing the guitar. I have to kind of think to jog my memory on what it's supposed to be and really think to leave out what needs to be left out. It's one thing to mindlessly sing through pentatonics, and another thing for me to have to pull my brain together to think and play them up and down the guitar all over the place. Eventually the muscle memory will probably meld while I'm fretting. 😉 So the middle of this clip where you stop for a little bit, is the place I need to make it click, and register in my brain, formation wise. I hear it. Just need to note (map) the tactile shortcuts with it. Thanks❣️

Wow, this lesson really put everything together for me and I am really using the pentatonic for my advantage by knowing its strengths. Some of this lesson was really confusing like the first concept that he taught about having running out of room on the fret board is a good place to be in I don't really get but kind of. But the rest of this lesson was amazing and really started making me sound amazing because I focus on that flat 7, flat 3, 1 relationship and adding that to the rest of the theory I know about the blues scale. And by actually understanding that flat 7, flat 3, 1 relationship you can completely use your eat to hear where you are in the scale at all times.
