Learn something new about Industry icon Powell Peralta!
It all begin with George in his garage, making homemade skateboards for his son in the 70's. George, an aeronautics engineer, had a knack for innovation, and loved tinkering with new ideas for making everyday things better. It wasn't long before he connected with Stacy Peralta, a pro skateboarder who had a special talent for marketing. The match was made in heaven, and the brand began growing in popularity, recruiting a team of underdogs and misfits, who would become the infamous bones brigade; tony hawk, steve caballero, mike mcgill, lance mountain, rodney mullen, and tommy gurreuro. The team topped the competition podiums for years, and released a number of industry-leading skateboard films which have now become timeless icons of skateboarding culture.
However, great success can have a dark side, as Stacy and George began to argue about the future of the company; Stacy wanted to see the team disperse to start new small companies, whereas George saw this as foolish. Eventually parting ways and bringing the company temporarily to a close, Bones Brigade members parted ways to make many of the iconic brands of today: Lance started the firm, Tony started Birdhouse, Tommy started Real, and Rodney started world industries with Mike Vallely and Steve Rocco.
Today, Powell Peralta continues to be an industry leader, pioneering new technologies within skateboarding; particularly with the creation of the flight deck, and Bones Swiss Bearings. To learn more, head to shop.shredzshop.com/

Who is your favourite Powell Peralta team rider of all time and why?! ALSO: Anyone own any crazy rare old Powell Peralta gear?!
Shredz Shop Steve Cab! Love those half cab vans.
Powell Peralta made great gear. The boards and wheels lasted forever. I rode my cubes for years. CAB is the GOAT because you had street CAB as well. A lot of guys are buying Cab's dragon reissue. Good for Cab.
True! How many other pro's have had a street and vert career, plus stayed a relevant name in skateboarding for 3 decades. No one.
Lance Mountain
Danny Way, in his early teen years just like Collin McKay and Frankie Hill. They were blowing everyone's minds at their ages.
Lance was and still is the heart of skateboarding!
Argyle The Galactic Nomad I fully agree! Lance and also Gonz make me wanna skate.
Lance was always my guy. I met him when I was a kid and asked him to sign my shirt. It meant the world to me.
He is a cool dude
100% Lance was always my favourite
I don't think people realize just how instrumental Back To The Future was to the 80's skateboard movement.
Absolutely. BTTF is singlehandedly the reason for the renaissance in '85-'86. Skateboarding was dead before Marty ripped the handle box off that scooter .
Love Powell Peralta. I've been skating them ever since 1987. Lance Mountain future primitive was my very first deck. My current deck is a reissue Steve Caballero bats and dragons street deck.
Lance has always been my fav! Stoked to see him doing well.
I grew up in Orlando Florida and skating was everything to us kids. Making ramps and skating everywhere. It was a great childhood.
Really sentimental for those who were afforded to ride one of those board in which I included myself. Well those dudes are all awesome but my favourite one is Steve Caballero, great skateboarder and better person so humble this dude. Thanks for the video!!!
I love powell peralta I’m getting a flight deck once they get restocked.
I use to love powell till I found out you can buy there stuff for cheaper on amazon lol
Guy, I think i found Chin.
Powell peralta was the first brand I rode
Which Powell peralta 8.06 size range (Mellow) concave would be a good for just riding on the concrete? There are no ramps or rails just areas of concrete. Which one would be good for learning regular kicklip and easy tricks?.
@@yogeebear2599 ikr
Do spitfire wheels
It's one we reeeeally wanna do! Just gonna be a beast of a research project!
Did you see that first Mike Mcgill shape....Just like lance Mountains in the 80s....loved that shape
Not hardly..McGill had a squared nose
those were random skateboards from the skaters, def not their 1st. That cab graphic was like his 4th graphic.
One of my favorite brands. The dragon and the ripper skeleton make it so iconic. On my first board I have a huge ripper sticker on the bottom lol 💀 🐉
*we meet again*
@@fueg00nyxxx Sup bro
@@claysoggyfries sup my g 👋🏾
You forgot about Frankie Hill. His part in Ban This changed street skating. Everyone was blowing out how big he was going on the street back in 89 it was revolutionary. Then his ollie down that gap in Propaganda again changed what could be done on a skateboard. 100% pioneer of going big on the streets
Absolutely..
Add Ray Barbee to that list also..
In 1990 I started skateboarding I watched these guys on videos over and over again soon I started With Friends of my own formed a group known as the hick-town skateboarders we all had many adventures together and were able to pick up sponsorships thanks to all the Bones Brigade members for inspiring us
Epic! 🙌
Lance is under estimating himself, the Bones Brigade wouldn't be the same without him. And he still shredding!
Skateboarding is about having fun, and Lance does that as well as any skater ever. Definitely an essential part of the brigade.
Totally agree. He was always my favorite
Nice video! Im so thankful to have experienced this era in skateboarding. Mid 80's skater!
Stoked broooo
this series is so much fun, thank you so much!!!!
aww, i love that end bit with lance. hes a true legend. big love to lance mountain.
My fav Bones Brigader!
Cool video and I learned some stuff. I owned a McGill model and a Caballero model back in the day. Loved those boards.
Watching these videos just brings me back .. I miss it so much .. me and my 46 year old self.. I went through so many boards .. I was usually a P&P loyalist .. BUT.. each board was their own art piece .. Rob Roscop was one of the best I had .. the arm coming through the target .. each year it would change a little more .. ripped skin off the arm .. cyborg arm.. I also loved Steve Stedham when he was with POWEL .. but got his board when he left .. the skeleton flying on the bomber plane with the Bomb in hand .. Christian Hosoi was one of my absolute fav boards and skaters .. my ultimate fav was the Steve Caballero.. UGH! So bad ass .. wasn’t a huge Hawk fan.. preferred Hosoi .. doing his Christ air with that bad ass board ! Also.. how many of u got a board from a family member that didn’t understand what was acceptable lol.. mine got me a NASH VIOLATOR .. nothing better on a kids self esteem being called “POSER” lol.. when they FINALLY GOT IT.. took me to the skate shop.. and we had them BUILD me a bad ass Caballero.. had the new RAT BONES put on .. loved those .. but I actually dug SLIME BALL WHEELS MORE .. they grabbed better .. I miss my Hosoi Hammerhead ..
Yo this gonna be sick
Awesome historical journey. Combine aerospace engineering, art and pro riders = MAGIC!
Cant wait!
Do a Blind Skateboards next!
Awesome keep doing good work
Just bought a Powell peralta skateboard and it’s sick
That was a cool review. Sk8 history and what is going on now with boarders is awesome. Nostalgia.
Im an 80's kid i still have my Tony Hawk bird skull board with independant trucks on Rat bones wheels. I also have a Lance Mountain board and Christian Hasoi board. I missed those times back then
If you have Facebook you should post a pic on “retro skateboard collectors” group! People will lose their minds!
I still have The Search For Animal Chin on VHS and still watch it from time to time.
We have it on VHS framed up in the shop!
Shredz Shop @Very nice
cool vid man!
Sick video !
Great Info...
Great video and more like these are needed!
Glad you enjoy!!
I am torn between two Powell Peralta riders, so I'm gonna mention both being my favorite riders ... Rodney Mullen and Danny Way ... also the video should have mentioned that after many, many years Mike Vallely returned back to Powell and rode for them for a few years!
My favorite brand when I started skating back in 1990, in fact, it was a Powell Peralta deck that got me into skating, I went to a buddy`s house after school and he had just got a Ray Barbee Rag Doll in Teal Green/Blue with Gull Wings and T-Bones on it, he gave me a go and I was hooked!
I went home, pleaded with my parents for a board, they bought me a Variflex XPS Tony Hallam Street model for my birthday in May on the condition that if I stuck with it that they would upgrade me to a proper pro model that Christmas...by Christmas the XPS was worn down to a toothpick, they kept their promise and I got a Tony Hawk Medallion Mini (I was a short kid) with Tracker Agro`s and Rat Bones for Christmas, I tried out Santa Cruz after the Hawk but snapped it in less than 4 months so went back to Powell Peralta, owned so many over the years that i`ve lost track...
Awesome video bro.🤘
Rat Bones was my first board!!
This brought back a lot of memories. I used to ride a phat ass vision gator and later a Lucero but I always liked the artwork and promotions of the P&P gear! Thanks for the video!
Great little history lesson appreciate it
Thanks for watching! 🙏🙏
That was super awesome and definitely informal.
Stoked you liked it!!!
Awesome
Awesome history lesson
What we have all been waiting for
Good one.
Favorite decks, the lance mountain re issue is my favorite next to the animal chin cab red dragon!
Ima get a Powell skateboard here soon
Well done dude!!
Thanks! stoked you enjoyed!
am excite
Niiiiice
Sweet video.. I am a Norwegian who lived in Canada for a year. Skating and Snowboarding over there. I think you should think about doing a very detailed video on Mark Gonzales and also Mullen. The Gonz will forever be underrated in my view.. He is always fun to watch. I also think Frankie Hill is very important if we are going into street skating. It is worth remembering that street skaters voted him into the Powell team. On the powell team I think Hill and Valelly influenced me the most.
Loooooove how much I learned!!!!!!!!!!
🙌👊
Let’s get an emerica one
14 things you didnt know about plan b skateboards
I'm sure it'll happen! It'd just be a huge one with the original Plan B and the modern version.
Which Plan b 8.06 deck would be a good all around board not a stee just a regular simple basic one from Plan b? A Mellow one
Back at it
Man, Those were the days! I had some of those boards and I think I still have one in my garage!
If you still have originals, they’re worth a ton of cash now!
Those first 8 years were INSANE. I was what 11-19yo in the SFBA, watching Cab ride ramps, Gonz ride street - and completely wearing my BBrigade tapes out in the dark of night. Can't pick a favorite skater - even loved Rodney Mullen (freakshow). Magic years - hats off to everyone who was gutting that era out in vans, surfing couches across the world - and fueling that fire.
LEGENDS NEVER DIE 👊 .
I feel like yall are about to blow up
Awesome video! Do one about Alien Workshop (RIP)
-A
Another honorable mention for the Powell Peralta Bones Brigade team is Frankie Hill. There were so many legends.
Definitely!! One of the Godfathers of street/handrail skating
@@ShredzShop So true! With Natas Kaupas Mark Gonzales being 2 other major legends in that time. It only lead to the next generation of icons. Pat Duffy, Jamie Thomas, Chad Muska, Heath Kirchart. and so many more.
Gleaming The Cube with Christian Slayter, great movie! Oh, and I was on the pipeline drill in that town, nice little town.
That’s rad! They’re still working on that pipeline!
Nice!,will have to visit your shop when I’m back down.
No old gear but I have the Powell skull ripping threw logo tattooed on my left shoulder. In my opinion it's one of the best logos in skateboard history.
Didn't know you guys were in Cochran! Imma stop by next time I'm passing through. (From Edmonton)
I had a stack of my old worn or broken decks from the 80s. When I went off to college in 92 my mom cleaned my room and tossed it all out. 😥
😭😭 my parents threw out over 10 years of magazines when I moved out... I was devastated, lost a good chunk of skateboarding history
Do one on the early smaller independent companies like Schimit Stix, Skull, Skates, Santa Monica Airlines or Madrid. Or maybe when the decks started to be shaped different like Hosoi did w/Alva 1st, and later the Hammer Head (made by Skull?). Those indy brands and the difference in board shape changed the game in the early/mid 80s. Just a thought? Good video. I wanna cry when I think about all the shit my Mother boxed a did God knows what with? I had a different Sk8 shirt for every day of the MONTH and then some back then & lotta of equipment/ decks. Uggg!
I want to know more about their wheel design and development also their use of alternative materials in board production like power ply etc? Thanks
I'd like to see a doc on zorlac or creature.love the doc. Miss those days.
cool
i just wanna say whoever thought of putting a red border on your thumbnails needs a raise. He str8 hacked youtube, and this was the first channel I saw do it.
You could do an update on the skaters... like Lance, Frankie Hill, Ray Barbee etc....
I just saw a video of Bucky Lasek still skating rith Tony Hawk and Andy McDonald... its so refreshing to see those guys just having fun skating...
I have some old Powell Peralta stickers from 1982 that I have kept safely stored in a book.
Rad!
Love the content...late 80s l had a tony hawk claw mini..with all the triming..cost 320 back then...its gone ..spewing...l brought a lance mountain family bout 4 years ago....how can l tell if its real or re issue
What about Frazier's opening part in Powell 8?
Should have included Jay Smith in your last listing of Bones Brigade alumni.
mentions him at 2:05, or his board release at least.
Tony Hawk. I wish I had all the boards I've owned. My first skate was a general issue with trackers, it was 1980. I've had many so powell boards through the 80s growing up. I wish I still had them, I think I thought they would always be available. Then I lost interest in skating from 92 till 2002. I did buy a Tony Hawk later on on ebay. I still have it but the set up is all wrong. I wish it had trackers, it has ventures. Maybe they're worth something too, because they must have been first edition. Anyway, Thanks for the video.
2:06 Alan gelfand Ollie tank is my most favorite board ever I ride it a lot
A lot of people don’t know Christian would’ve been part of the bones brigade if Tony wouldn’t have got the spot. That's when he left PP
My favorite Powell Peralta rider is Rodney Mullen because he built the foundations of modern street skating!!! ❤️🐐
He's the godfather!
I dont agree.....He was the Trickster...Mullen mastered and advanced Freestyle....The dude couldnt even ride thew street , his dad wouldnt let him....Created lots of tricks but not Street skating...Too raw for Mullen,
@@ShredzShop How is he the godfather of street, he never got dirty on the streeet.....He was Freestyle. Not Street. I was Skating then.....Mullen was down in Florida practicing at his dads...While me and My buddies were some of the first to be STREET SKATING the Brooklyn Banks in early 80's. I know the most famous sways that LATLEY but...there paid to say it.
@@junipersnow1 Agree
I had my first skateboard, Skull & Sword by Powell back to 1993.
I could of swore that Mike vallely was still in the bones birgade when public domain came out. he quit shortly after it did.
Bones Brigade forever!
I had a green powell blank in 98.
Something on the rise and demise of BA skate brands like, Airwalk shoes, VSW, would be awesome. Miss those brands as so much!
I still have my 1st edition powel peralta deck
ThTs insane! You should post some pics!
Alien workshop/habitat would be cool
Whats song is in the intro? Ty
🤘😛
My cents are as follows, I liked watching this video.
Glad you enjoyed!!!
Can you do one on Hook-ups boards please?
Every kid on my block wanted to trade in our elements boards back in the 90s/2000s to get one.
My best friend was the only one to get one.
I'm sure there's one coming! Love the old Hookups boards and he was doing some art direction for Birdhouse beforehand too.
Shredz Shop i had a Tony Hawk Birdhouse board as well. My Element board was a Natas Kaupas board
Enjoi
Keep pushin. { Regular Gang }
Do one on Creature 🤘🤘🤘
Levi, I'd love to see a doc on Zorlac and Skull Skates.
Skull skates would be a dope one! We'd love to chat to PD and ask him a bunch of Canadian skate history questions.
Tony hawk was the best .And still is ........ He'll yeah keep sk-8 ing
FYI that pic at 1:58 is Mark Gonzales, not Alan Gelfand. Gonz ollied the gap at the '89 Hawaii NSA Finals. He never rode for Powell.
But it's a HUGE ollie gap, which I guess pays tribute to Gelfand. ;-)
Great take. What about Vision?
The photo of the ollie over the gap on the Y ramp at 7:52 is Mark Gonazles, not Alan Gelfand.
you should do a video on how powell peralta was part of the freemasons..
Tell me more...
@@ShredzShop well ive found lots of symbolisim in there boards. in the video you made there was a all seeing eye on one of cabs boards. skull and bones being a symbol of freemasons.the 6 six's in the powell logo. have you watched any masonic videos on youtube?
I have not, I know nothing about them
good vid , but there is one contest result that is referred to as early and that same year bones winning a lot.
Barbee was not on the team in 81 nor was Hensley competing
T-Bones please!
Where's the link for more info on the Blind ad? I remember when that came out actually. Yup, I just dated myself a bit there, lol.
Here's the Dear George article: shop.shredzshop.com/blogs/blog/blind-skateboards-heritage-re-issue-decks/
That's rad! It's such a cool series. We had the Blind re-issue boards in a couple years back, but they didn't sell nearly as well I thought they would. They were rad, hand screened and pressed in America.
Shredz Shop because Powell Peralta wasn’t/isn’t/has never been dead! The only reason those blind decks were cool is because they looked like the old school PP decks. I didn’t even know they were supposed to be a burn. Well sounds like blind got burned more than they burned PP and that’s awesome. My faves back in jr. high and high school was the super soft rat bones wheels, the redz bearings and the Cab deck with the original dragon and not the one shown in this vid. You know when they had the regular cab deck and the mini cab. Those were sickness. But all their shit was on point. And Idk why but the only rider I didn’t like from the OG crew was McGill and it sucks because he’s a nice guy and the McTwist was clutch but there was just something about the guy that was too goody two-shoes or teachers pet type or something I just couldn’t put my finger on it, I wanted to like him but I just couldn’t Hahahaha sorry Mike, and not that you care but, I like you now tho if that’s any consolation.
