WORLD INDUSTRIES SKATEBOARDS: 14 Things You Didn't Know about World Industries
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 чер 2024
- The history of World Industries all starts in the mind of Steve Rocco. After riding for Sims for a period of time and being let go, Steve Rocco was let go by the TM. He thought his skate career potentially was over. But, Skip Engblom of SMA worked with Rocco to start World Industries, and showed him the ropes of getting a skateboard company started. Rodney Mullen also pitched in initial funds to keep the brand rolling.
The original team consisted of members such as mike vallely, jovontae turner, jeremy klein, jef hartsel, and jesse martinez. Vallely worked with Rodney and World to create the Animal Farm board, an adaptation off of the double kick board created by Vision.
World industries has released videos such as Rubbish Heap (created by Spike Jonze), and Love Child, while also being a part of videos such as Snuff, Video Days, Questionable, Virtual Reality, and many more underneath 101, Blind, and Plan B.
Artists such as Mark Mckee and Sean Cliver have released a number of ground breaking-ly offensive graphics through World, including Colvenetics, Day at the Beach, the napping Negro, and the Randy colvin censorship graphic.
Many of these boards are now considered rare vintage items.
World industries ads and content were so offensive even, that they often were excluded from Transworld Magazine and other media outlets; because of this, Rocco launched Big Brother magazine. Starting as a print mag, it grew to become videos as well, and in these we see the beginnings of the Jackass series with Jonny Knoxville, Steve-O, Weeman, and more.
Rocco also worked with Mark Gonzalez to start Blind skateboards, Mike Ternasky to start Plan B, and Natas Kaupas to start 101 skateboards.
These days, World industries is synonymous with all sorts of random novelties: things from world industries scooters, to snowboards, to even a series of tech decks.
In later life, World Industries created the infamous flame boy and wet willy graphic, one of the most recognizable board graphics to be associated with the brand. The old world industries, or the world industries which is considered "good" and core, in many ways disappeared (some thought it went out of business) with the sale of World industries for $29 million. However, World Industries continues under the careful guidance of pro skateboard Anthony Shetler.

Anyone own some World Industries boards? Or some Big Brother magazines?!
I definitely had a few World decks, and some of the Big Brother videos. I forget the names of the videos, but on one a dude was doing a 50/50 on a ledge and when his board got hung up he went flying forward and broke his arm. You could see the dudes arm pointing in the wrong direction. It was so gnarly looking that I was kinda put of from grinding things.
14 things you didn't know about Levi 🙏🙏
@916savage MoB I never heard of the dude, but if ya say he's a Scientologists then he really is a giant douche nozzle. Cult s#*# really p!$$@$ me right the f#@* off. I was a teenager whenever I got World $#!+ for birthdays and Christmas so haven't really owned any of those big 5 you speak of in 30 something years. I just push blanks and Ventures these days cause I'm broke than a m@+#*& f#@*&@ these days. Anywho sorry if I offended ya. Peace out and one L.✌️
I got a World Industries Christmas Complete lol
I used to. My first popsicle board was a World Industries deck. Friend gave it to me because my first board(1987 nash) got ran over by a car and was "Wack as fuck" according to my friends because I was skating an 80s deck. I couldn't even fucking ollie at the time, so I gave no fucks. It rolled like shit, been left outside, and chipped by whoever owned it before me, I bought it for $20 from a flea market.
Blind and World Industries were my favorite skateboard designs! Also, Hook-Ups and Black Label.. back in the day..
I'm from that same era hah!
@@ShredzShop hahahaha wow man i know many brand skateboards have knowledge that product but have you heard about RDS a.k.a Red Dragons skate shop ?!
@@teodorusdikypermadi We're actually workin on one with the RDS guys right now ;)
Gonna be a banger!
@@ShredzShop oh yeah
Loved all the art from these
6:12 Aaron Kyro be like: first you wanna get comfortable riding your board 💀
*go fast and commit*
That Scientology- Braille joke got me 😂
Anybody who hasn’t seen it should go watch the man who souled the world!
Link is in the description!! ^^ 👍🏻👊🏻
Definitely, I saw it on Fuel t.v. a long time ago and it is definitely worth seeing.
You recommend watch this first or that
@@soccercaballo510 be aswell watching this first to get a little taste of what the man who souled the world is about lol
And buy Sean clivers Disposable book.
I feel privileged to have spent my teens under the "evil influence" of 🌎 . When I think back to the boards I learnt most flip tricks on, they were mostly World. You make a good point of how much they supported street skating back then... they really epitomised the zeitgeist.
BTW, think it was the Bong Olympics, not the Weed Olympics.
It was the Bong Olympics, lol. I remember that issue. I remember when they started age restricting the magazine, but skateshops didn't care. I probably shouldn't have been reading it as a teenager, lol.
World Industries is the best skate company. I know they aren’t the only ones to change history in skateboarding but they had a huge impact. Like , majorly.
It's cool to look back on their history ads and team. You can definitely see some World Industries inspiration in FA, Quasi and lots of the trendy new brands out now.
World industries rocked. Rubbish heap is such an awesome possibly underated video. I started rolling in 84 and I was a huge h street fan I'm in UK and loved deathbox boards. The first and best UK based company. Had decks with u boat concave. They were awesome. Happy days.
Dude I’m so hyped on your videos keep them coming
🙏🙌
I still got a World Industries Board. Jeff Hartsel. It was right before I quit riding, still in great shape. The couple times I rode I didn't wanna destroy the graphics. She was beautiful
Back in 1997, I got a neon yellow Santa Cruz with neon green wheels to match that said “skateboarding is not a crime” , with independent trucks .. I begged for a “real” skateboard for Christmas and I got it ! But .. during the same Christmas break , some punks stole it from me and I never got it back :/ .. some of the older skaters in my town sold me a used board for $20 .. it was a beat up “slick” world industries deck with chips in the tail and nose , grind king trucks and some no name wheels .. I was so happy with it tho! I learned all my fist tricks on that board , practicing Ollie’s and then heel flips ( I thought I was doing kick flips lol ) until my mom seen how much I was in love and dedicated to skateboarding .. she finally broke down and got me a brand new complete again, followed by many more through the years .. skateboarding will always be my first love and I’ll never forget that shitty world industries board that got me started !
Peace and love from Southern California 🤙🏻✌🏼
I bought a Steve Rocco re-issue board a couple years back when they came out! Cost me a bunch of $$$ but so worth it!!
Love your channel so underrated
Stoked you enjoy!!
My first street deck was a world industry's flame boy bord and I loved it
I look forward to these videos so much 💗
That gets me stoked!!
Another great video. Thanks guys👏
Stoked you enjoyed!! 🙌🏻👊🏻
world industries teck decks were the reason why i started skating
haha nice!
This was recommended by UA-cam and was a really interesting watch. Thank you!
I heard of big brother but I believe that was before I got into skateboarding (2000), where it was turning more in from cky to jackass.
I'm glad to heard W.i are making a come back. Never got to ride any of their boards. But I always remember them being around £40 where as other boards were pushing £50 at the time.
Just subbed, curious on more what you didn't know vids. :)
Damn, thank you!!! stoked you enjoy! Comments like this are why we do this. We have a new14 things every other Saturday 👊🏻👊🏻 Then a new show called 9’s dropping tomorrow!
Another Killer Video! 👊🔥🤘
DBC.. Daily Blessings Coming! Thank You and God Bless!
👊🏻👊🏻
I loved World industries and the lil fellas reminded me of Spy vs Spy
One of my favorite companies fo sho. I had the World Industries board with Wet Willy shooting water at Flame Boy who's shooting fire back. It was a slick and lasted a really long time. What ever happened to slicks? I liked them because they lasted and you could slide longer. Also, what ever happened to 101? That was another one that had cool graphics.
My first skateboard was a World Industries Flameboy vs Wet Willy, slick, complete deck, bought out of a CCS catalogue back in 1997.
These are fun to watch!
Thanks Timo!!
Have to do Consolidated Skateboards, they come out with some dope ass shit.
We do sell them, but haven’t gotten new ones in a little bit.
Just stumbled across your channel! Got my sub bro! Keep up the good work! Loved the new AW vid too.
Like everyone's saying, hook-ups would be a fun brand to do one of these on. Osiris or city stars (if anyone remembers CS lol) would be a good one too. Peace my dude!
Edit: és would be sick too.. the amount of big names they had in the menikmati video was absolutely insane back in the day
First, thanks for the sub and kind words!! Second, love hearing people's ideas for vids and City Stars/ Osiris would but be amazing!!
Lot of my desks in middle school had crude flame and droplet drawn on it haha cool video
Sick video
My old drifter friend loved my Big Brother magazines. Old drifter dude approved! I guess I left all of them at his camp and they just succumbed to the elements. I didn't have the sense to take them back home and save them. Old drifter dude was actually a great skateboarder; he could do multiple 360's in combat boots, drunk off his ass. He won some contest in like 1964 in California. He told me about a trick he invented where he could get onto benches back then, which sounded like an early ollie-esque trick; it was basically that thing where you get onto curbs without ollieing, but he mentioned smacking the tail and then leveling it out from a nose wheelie.
Rad, yea those old Big Brother mags would be worth some cash now!
14 things you didn’t know about deathwish
Yes, and Lizard king
@@cornhole2610 haha ik u
deathwish sucks

@@aussiedirtbikers4774 you found me
How about Darkstar? Loved their board graphics, first deck I ever bought from Mr. Rags (RIP)
Mr rags was my first job. I loved putting skateboards together for people. You know mr rags was owned by Claire’s?
When we were slow I used to push the racks of clothes to the sides and skate in the store. Probably why they went out of business... 🤷♂️ oh well I was 16
@@keithglynn3928 lmao that's hilarious, I do remember seeing staff doing that at Mr. Rags as well. Went up to get a new board one day and it was a "Man alive" all of a sudden :(
Omg Darkstar had the lil medieval knight characger
Waaay back when, previous to the Flameboy era, I had a old World Industries shirt that had what looked like Piglet. I wasn't aware of everything going on back then but that must've been one of Disney's cease-and-diseast letters.
"Connecting you with skateboarding"
I love that little catchphrase it makes me feel like part of the family *yes I'm high*
👌🏻 🛹✌🏻
😂 😂 😂
I’m 46 years old and I can tell you it was the best when all this started. Skaters should always have a “ go fuck your self “ attitude.
The very best ever. We need another Rocco right now.
That Draplin print in the background is sick!
Thank you! It's a Canadian themed one that a friend gave to me!
Finally🙌🏽
You guys should do Alien Workshop next
@Gamerskull Death they did? In what video?
Loving this series. Do one of these on hook-ups?
🙏🏻thank you!! And Hookups is on our list!
still got one of my wet willy and flame boy decks from like 03' I think lol one of my first ever "pro" decks.
That’s sick! It’s hard to find old world industries online!
Not trying to hijack your comments but I just interviewed Anthony Shetler yesterday on my channel. He talked about his relationship with World during our conversation about his company All I Need. It was awesome experience to get to talk with him.
Not hijacking at all! That's super rad, I'll pop over and watch! I feel like that should have been Shetler runs* not owns hey?
@@ShredzShop Closer, yes Sir.
I love this i love to kearney about all these companies
Hyped you enjoyed!
That farm animal double kick was the deck to have back then.
We had the reissues a few years back and I still regret not owning one 😭😭
First board I bought from CCS mag was the wetwilly vs Flameboy yinyang design loved that board till I got my first shortys board whas hooked on the pop shortys had .
@matt rardin 7.5 slick after the growth spert the board was a little to narrow for me. Lots of waxed up low parking poles..
HOOK-UPS pls
Spike Jonze was a photographer for a BMX mag (BMXPlus?) before he had anything to do with skating. Amazing arc for Spike. Good on him.
I didnt know a lot of this stuff in the vid. I checked out of skating in '80 for... bmx.. Pretty entertaining.
I just got back from Ross. There was a World Industries sweatshirt I should have grabbed. It's what made me click on this vid.
Go back for sweater!!! 😜😜
Growing up world was just always a company you heard about. I never got to skate one till now. I got a new wet Willy deck and I happy they are selling boards again!!
6000 seems to be quite an important number for rocco
this is so hype lol way over due for the world industries video
If you guys need any ideas for videos,; I know the focus on this channel is to talk about brands and product but since I started getting skating I have found it hard trying to connect a skate trick with its name. I don’t know what a 50-50 is or fakie to shuv. Connecting the trick to a pro skater of group of people made it popular (origins) . Also another idea, what makes a pro skater like revered, what did he do to the for skating and how has it evolved. These are all thing I would like to know and it would help. Thanx
I had some World Industries TNT bearings, and those bad boys were smooth as eggs!! 😂😂😂😂
😂😭😂
Levi: "The Ads"
The Video: *shows an Ad*
UA-cam be outta control with the ads this December
Cool
Off topic but world industries had some great graphics but deathwish has a place in my heart
Pig board was and still is my favorite board. Would buy one online but I know I'll ride it. Just got a Gato cat butt
Its crazy how skateboarding is basically all about marketing. It's just different brand logos on the same thing.
Still like that, There’s 2 factories that make 95% of board brands.
@@ShredzShop PSStix being one of them
I found a World Industries shirt at Ross last month lol
Jealous!!
I found my crack whore ex-wife at Ross....
World industries wet willy vs flameboy was my first name brand deck😭
So have a look at that list so many fucking great companies born from Rocco, fucking legend....
World Industries and H-Street were my favorite companies.

P.S. JT enjoyed the design 😩🤦🏾♂️
World Industries is back?? How come I cant find any decks ANYWHERE??
...are you talking about those canadian tire world industries? i got one of those for my nefew.
It’s weird, there’s almost like 3 different brands making World stuff, there’s skate stuff by Shetler, then Prime is doing re-issues of the classics, then there’s some random company making like quads and scooters and stuff hahah
Do one on Rodney Mullen, please.
Big Brother Mag, the Skate-archist cookbook lol
Omg 10:53 I remember drawing wet flameboy
Double kick pig farm board was a game changer for me. Could ollie as hard as you wanted and your foot never came off. Was ollieing trash cans np
Also you should do something on toxic and brand x.. and also lake skateboard and walker... get some old school into it .
Walker, I'd completely forgot about them my first pro board as such was the walker mark lake nightmare also had the nightmare 2 a few yrs later. But it was the vision Kele rosecran that really helped my early progression. Then I either rode deathbox or h street. You like what you like haha that's what was great about decks back then. They were something special.
@@roddymac998 they are cool boards back then. And shape boards its was art.. .. I wish mark lake could reissue the original shape decks with the gangsters and liberty decks. I've always wanted them but never had chance to get one.. also wish tony alva make some more reissue decks from his company and team decks.. do more. Another board I wish I had was alva deck the Eddie monkey board.. but I have a small collection that when I die.. going to split between each my lil kids because I never had a good retirement plan and now busted up my body some and fighting fibromyalgia and other issues. I worked for many mills in Maine and I'm now on SSI/SSDI and I wish I could be back working. But I do my best for my lil kids and wife I have now. I went threw 2 divorces. Luckily I didn't have kids wit my second exwife and I was homeless before living in my cars to pay child support to first exwife. 2 adult kids wit my first exwife and 3 lil kids I have now.. but I had in storage my skateboard collection back then being homeless and now myself and family renting a house now and my collection is all over.. I am very lucky to have my wife I have now and kids and a home .. my collection I think I might have 100 or lil more in skateboards.. all kinds . Few reissue and mostly original and some cheap version decks.. because the art work that's painted on them. Mix of wall hangers and ready to ride ones
My first pro skateboard was a mini pro fireboy World Industries board given to me by a friend of mine
thats rad!! 🔥
Does anyone know anything about Tech Deck Snowboarding from World Industries? I used to have this PC Game on CD ROM and I'm dying to know the song names included there. Think it was released on Nov 2000. Please do send me a link if any of you find one. Been looking for it like forever!

It's so crazy looking back on it haha With everyone being so offended by every little instagram post today, it seems insane that a magazine like that ever even existed.
@@ShredzShop Seems like the internet in reality IS Big Brother magazine on meth. There's like two worlds, one is the collective consciousness that we HOPE to be and then there's the dark side where humanity is thrown wayside in lew of troglodyte level reptile brained entertainment.
