  • Magic seems to happen as the potter kicks the wheel into motion and awakens the lifeless clay in his hands.
Join master potter Mark Presher as he ushers us into the past, bringing to life the fine craftsmanship of the nineteenth century potter. Follow the story of clay gathering, wheel turning, glazing, decorating, and wood firing. Observe the potter's skill in transforming clay into utilitarian, yet beautiful, everyday household items. Learn how the potter helped mold the pattern of everyday life in the 1800's.
Set in a reconstruction of a nineteenth century pottery, the images are unique and striking. From streambed to wood fire, the process is beautifully portrayed. Traditional period music played on hammered dulcimer and fiddle throughout is heart lifting and festive, and the love of making pots a gift to the viewer.
This video captures the interest of viewers from children learning about the founding of our country, to art students interested in the historic art of wood firing and salt glazing, as well as the general viewer rediscovering a pottery firing process seldom seen in our time.
Produced and Directed by Jeffrey Mead, POV-Rose Media.

Enjoyed the video no end.But I know next to nothing about pottery except that some is glazed and some is not.Does the method shown glaze the inside of the pots as well as the outside? If not how do you seal the inside surface of the pots.Much obliged and please post more.!!

      jewelvibebabo great question
The salt becomes a gas, and as it touches the walls of the kiln, and the pots and it gradually forms the glaze with an orange peel texture, and the clay vitrifies which means it gets soft like wet clay again because the clay is melting together into stone. Then slowly it is cooled and then once it is room temp you can tap off the pots from the wadding and from the lip to lip contact with it’s up ended twins and then sand the sharps off, wash and send it for use.

If you are wondering cause I WATCH alot of videos...ask Dr.Lori. The general POTTERY they make today I WOULD think it's glazed on the inside and we use it all the time.I gotta believe anyone who can stand and even walk into ovens...they are collected pieces? What is your guess? Thank you

If there is not bisque firing for salt-glazed pottery, then was all pottery of it's type effectively bone china?
