Say hello to the Channel's new Project Car..... but what are the plans??? If you'd like to support the channel please check out the Patreon... / makingformotorsport
Ok, as a former BMW shop owner....Timing Chain guides on that little M44 are a must. Thermostat housing is a leaky bit. You're going to probably find a few stripped valve cover bolts. Once you go Speeduino and ditch that god aweful intake and go itb it should really wake up! Oh ya clutch is dual mass, your going to want to ditch that diesel truck bit and go with a single mass. I believe there was one available from the dealer in the European market. Some have converted with an M20 flywheel, most blow the quid on the aftermarket bit. That's all I got, sounds like you got this under control, looking forward to your adventure. I have built more than a few E30's and E36's for racing so this should be fun to watch ;)
I finally managed to fit ITBS to my MX-5 and your videos are probably the main reason for my success. It took years of on and off research (like "i wish i could do this" but never thought i would), a few months of planning and around 40 days of fitting and problem solving. Didn't get any power increase but the sound alone is worth it. In the end i spent around 700€ using stock cut manifold, bike itbs, proper air filter (the most expensive thing) and remote tuning. Thank you!
I always wanted a 318ti! Wish I had bought one when good ones were dirt cheap. Not much into BMW, but the E36 era appeals to me and the 318ti is such a unique little nugget. I also have a passion for rally. Supercharged rally car sounds pretty awesome, though I'd never object to a turbo. Hard to come up with a name.
I’ll have to be abit careful for rules and regs for rallying, but I’ve got plenty of time to mess about with it! And a uperchargers will never not be cool…
A supercharger with a magnet clutch. Extreme weight reduction especially the moving parts like the wheels too! Diesel crankshaft and throw out the balance shafts and have 2.1 liters instead of 1.9 liters of displacement coupled with good cams, itbs (s50 itbs can fit too), nice exhaust and some fine tuning will already be able to produce about 200hp+. This engine has a lot of potential, its not called mini m3 at least back in the e30 times for no reason. You can fit a lot on this engine, you could even look into vanos retrofitting. Also I always imagined kinda a ford cosswort rs spoiler on these cars.
Just a thanks for your previous videos. Based on your confidence boosting example… I designed & printed intake manifolds for CBR throttle bodies, combined with 3D intake duct & speeduino NO2C … now on the road. Cheers!
•Supercharger is a good idea • diy weight reduction panels out of Fiberglass. •Diy Angle kit, I've heard one can use E46 control arms and angle out of these cars ( not exactly sure ) •methanol injection ( cools down charge air ) could go well with the Supercharger. •air to water intercooler . •ported cylinder heads
Free speed, aka weight reduction! I'm talkin go crazy, pull out everything, drill out any non-needed metal, no carpet, no sound dampening(I've used dry ice to help that glue come off), and anything else not needed.
Oh yeah want more schemes? Well I don't know if this would work, but if there's an NA rally class you may have an advantage if you could retrofit the awd drivetrain from an e46 into the shorty. You'd probably want to weld up the center diff as they're very slippy, but you'd end up with a light, short, tossable car with good power that's probably similar in weight to a subaru, but shorter in wheelbase and more powerful NA. But it looks like the frame may not kick up enough to clear a cv axle in the e36. You'd probably have to use the e46 upright as well. As for names, maybe like Stubbeamer or StubBMW or something?
Build a stroker out off this engine with ITB and try to make similar to BMW s14 engine Its easy to make it look like rally bmw: Put on some mud flaps, m3 style front bumper, spoiler and skid plate
nice timing got myself e46 318td compact project car last week :D Its so much fun, I was sleeping on the compacts for far too long just because of the looks
I nearly got an E46 compact and then this came up at the right price so I pounced in it, already having the diff was the decider…. I quite like the e46 but the saloon headlight conversion makes them look 🔥🔥🔥🔥
The Z3 was also half E30 half E36, the 2.8’s had LSD’s fitted, you’d probably have to change the crown wheel and pinion (incorrect ratio), but it would be a cheap LSD with a bit of work. Unless it already has one…
Epic!! I’m building a saxo to go rallying atm, thought about a compact but then had the saxo as an RX car al already caged etc. so looking forward to this!
I'm super thrilled to see you back with another project! I'd like to see more home brew engine management stuff on this one as well, along with more 3d print solutions to any issues you need to master. As to a name, since Rally racing looks like a high "pucker factor" event, perhaps BMW = Bowel Movement Wagon in this case. Or, since it's small and (going to be) fast and maneuverable over the terrain, "Das Frettchen" (The Ferret).
I am thinking it needs Throttle bodies and a speeduino asap… everyone else seems to agree! “Das Frettchen” and “Bowel Movement Wagon” 😂😂😂 I like the way your brain works!
Had one of these a couple of years ago. Great fun, veeery cheap, somewhat unreliable. Best cheap mod: E34 steering column u-joint! +50% (or more) feedback in the steering.
Great new project @Making for Motorsport , I'm looking forward to more on this car. I also have an idea about what you could try and do to the car: *Water-Methanol Injection* 😃 See, if you plan to install throttle bodies, source throttle bodies with pre-drilled holes for regular low pressure fuel injectors like the ones used on 4-stroke motorcycles. And then use the Speeduino to address the bank of injectors in those throttle bodies as a boost option, and feed it a Water-Methanol mixture. More smiles guaranteed 🚗💨
You should build something like 318 ti cup in germany or the rally version seen in Belgium. Keep the 4 cylinders engine for light weight and race it every week-end 😅😅😅
I'd say forget the supercharger and just put the M54 3.0 engine from an E46 330i in it. Remember if you're road rallying you're limited to N/A 4cyl if i remember correctly, a 6cyl engine is ok for a stage car though. Rebuild the diff and add some extra clutch plates for better lock up!
Yeah, I will likely play around with the M44 first but an engine swap is the best long term plan… I want to keep 4-cyl, for targa and road rally reasons, but also I like the lighter engine up front…. The 6’s are wonderful but I just love a 4-pot…
Fit the offset M3 solid lollipop bushes to the front. Huge difference. The rear beam can be made adjustable, I have a spare if you need one, easier to slot it all in in one go. Interested to see you going throttle bodies, planning the same on a Z3 with the same engine.
First, you've been missed! As for the name, I like the way she sounds already, and a supercharger is only going to make it sing a syphony, so my hat toss for a project car name? The Hans Beemmerman. I also love racing, though drifting was a bit more my scene (I did live in Japan for a couple years and I owned a 350Z for a few more). Rally has always appealed to me, but I always assumed it wasn't something a budget runner could get into seriously. If you're able to detail your efforts and costs, that'd be fantastic!
Keep in mind any class restrictions if you do want to compete - adding a supercharger would probably knock you out of running against similar cars. As for a Project name; Project Indicators? Given that you should be able to remove them now to save weight.
185,000 is nicely broken in, You won't have to worry about stiff ball joints or anything like that! Excited to see you back, I was just given a roll of glass fiber nylon filament for my 3d printer, I'm excited to see if I can get up to anything interesting with that!
@@MakingforMotorsport I've been tempted to get an induction heater. they're supposedly magical for rusty nuts and bolts, but thankfully all my vehicles leak enough that nothing is rusty.
There's an Eaton roots-style supercharger that's cheap and easy to get in Europe that was used by Mercedes on 1.8 to 2.2 litre SLK / CLK Kompressor models that would be perfect for this car.
I've got one of these and they are just FANTASTIC driving little cars. Cant keep any of the interior stuck to it though, and the plastics are all shit. Love having a RWD hatcback bmw that weighs less than an M3 tho

Before supercharger.... 3d print a ITB setup so we can hear it
Make it lighter and weigh all unnecessary bits.
Missed your videos

Nice info about diesel crankshaft 🤩
We love a bit of rear wheel drive over at the @WrenchMine channel. Right now we're rescuing 2 1985 Toyotas.
AE86 and A60 .... very nice.
Thanks for the Super bud… loving the shorts and the powder coating looks 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks!@@MakingforMotorsport

Supercharger from a r53 would be a bargain in the uk. Pair it with a 15 to 19% pulley and an airtec intercooler and you will be fire.
A Eaton M62 supercharger from a Mercedes compressor would suit this engine better
Had a 325ti 6spd manual e46 back in the day. Great driving car.
Free speed, aka weight reduction! I'm talkin go crazy, pull out everything, drill out any non-needed metal, no carpet, no sound dampening(I've used dry ice to help that glue come off), and anything else not needed.
Building a budget rally car, and go to an amateur rally with it!!! :D

Put ITB in it
The engine just loves it.
So excited your back with a new project! Can't wait to see what you get up to, I'm especially hyped for the rally mods
Very nice! I love the shape of this model, the proportions with the 2 door and the hatch. These are super rare here in NorthAm. Lovely
Yeah, I think they were available but not many sold, abit too European and small!
I can’t wait to get stuck into it…
Got a name for it yet? Was thinking... if it is a dream to go racing.. this must be the "Dreamer Beemer" 😊 Looking forward to follow this build. 🤘🏻
Build a stroker out off this engine with ITB and try to make similar to BMW s14 engine

Sounds like a very good project. I will trust you on this one and just turned on the notification so that I won't miss a bit of it.
Harry Hockley Motorsport does fibreglass panels for the E36 Compacts. Hatch weighs a ton. Single mass flywheel is a good mod.
Yay glad to see you're back. I was just going through your videos hoping to see a new one.
The prodigal son has returned!!
(Been rewatching tons because your content is awesome, and I've missed watching you)
I think buying a 6 cylinder to put in it would be perfect and then most likely turbo it.
Good to see you back. I was starting to get worried!
Good to see you back !
No idea for a name.
Commenting mostly for support 😅
It needs two more cylinders. M50, baby!
nice timing got myself e46 318td compact project car last week :D Its so much fun, I was sleeping on the compacts for far too long just because of the looks

you'll have to keep it under 2000cc including forced induction equivalence to be even slightly competitive
Happy to see you again!
Im so happy you got yourself a new project, looking forward to the series!
Wow at 7:45 you instantly started to dress like a BMW owner!
Very much looking forward to this project.
Yess. More Speeduino stuff. For a name...i dunno Timmer the Bimmer? Because its a Ti? Ill see myself out lol

Good choice of car. Looking forward to seeing how things progress.
Good to see you’re back! Nice car mate 😀
Cheers bud, more to come!
BMW 318 TI: SILVER STREAK. That could be a name.
Looks like a super fun project!
Hopefully! It’ll keep me busy!
Supercharged through itbs with an equal length exhaust manifold 👌👌
A ongoing list with all the updates would be nice. Thanks 😊
Epic!! I’m building a saxo to go rallying atm, thought about a compact but then had the saxo as an RX car al already caged etc. so looking forward to this!

Dyno -> ITB !!! 😁 -> Dyno again.
headporting, 3 angle velve job, head skimming, exhaust,
Good to see that you're back!
Hi there! It’s been a while! More to come soon 🤞
Great to see a new video
Make a full 3d printer areo kit for this 🤩
Had one of these a couple of years ago. Great fun, veeery cheap, somewhat unreliable. Best cheap mod: E34 steering column u-joint! +50% (or more) feedback in the steering.
Next cheap-ish mod - M3 3.0 front strut bearing and excentric wishbone bearing to change the caster angle.
I am super thrilled with the project car! Please do supercharge it.
I want to… soo bad… as much as I may just have to take it off again to meet regulations…🤦♂️
e-dirty6! i can't wait for this one to recieve the bike throttlebody treatment
Would also like to see a K20 swap with bike ITB’s running on Speeduino, another option I’ve considered for my M42 E30
It's alive!
Classic beamer - didn't see you indicate once.
As for the name - Project Skidmark?
You should build something like 318 ti cup in germany or the rally version seen in Belgium. Keep the 4 cylinders engine for light weight and race it every week-end 😅😅😅

Put itbs on the engine ig its a m44 or m42? That would be realy cool
Oh outstanding. I just started my first project car.... a BMW Z3 1.9 M44, with a very similar 180k miles on the clock. This should be interesting!! 😀
Well all the files will be available so hopefully you can mod-a-long with me! 😂
Never thought I would see a BMW, not to mention that its an m44.. looking forward to see your approach on modding this one!
I can’t wait until I work out my plan either!! 😂
@@MakingforMotorsport You already covered the basics, and i know you know the rest is all about weight.. i see speed holes! :D
Fit the offset M3 solid lollipop bushes to the front. Huge difference. The rear beam can be made adjustable, I have a spare if you need one, easier to slot it all in in one go.
Interested to see you going throttle bodies, planning the same on a Z3 with the same engine.
Son of a gun I've been planning on getting one of these to turn into a rally car at some point! Even photo shopped a design concept.
Great minds think alike! Hope I do your plans justice!
I think a 318ti with a k20 (or k24) swap would be magical
Speeduino flat shift enabled😊
Holy shit, i am really excited about this!
I would like to see you burn it and get another project car👌. It would get great viewing figures 👍
I think "Project Born Slippy" should be made into a convertible 🤣
A good Name would be REM3. A supercharger from Kompressor or 230 would be good but not sure of availability.
Speeduino tbi, supercharger. Sounds great. Maybe lighten it up idk
Could you do a more in depth video on putting the speeduino in try to use one on my car and having some trouble so if u can that would be great
Sick! Surely scan some small cosmetic parts and do one off carbon ones?
I put that Z3 rack in my E30 and it was the best bang for buck upgrade I did to the car. Excited to see where this one goes.
What is the part number for this rack? Tks
He's back!!!!
It’s been too long! 👍👍👍
those m4x engines have adjustable cam sprockets from the factory. maybe play with the cam timing a little once you start modding it
Yeah, a few degrees advance on the inlet cam makes a noticeable difference I’ve heard….
3d printed BORTS are surely the answer here. Or just the answer in general
Strip it out, make as light as possible (full Colin Chapman mode) and go hill climbing!!!
First, you've been missed!

Yeah, regulations aren’t fun…. I’d love to fit all range of stuff…. I think supercharger would be for the shits and giggles…
I got a 318is coup, m42b18 engine, im super intrested!!!!!
I've see a compact with the escort cosworth wing and its amazing
I would like to see some 3d scanning and modelling parts for it!
185,000 is nicely broken in, You won't have to worry about stiff ball joints or anything like that!
Excited to see you back, I was just given a roll of glass fiber nylon filament for my 3d printer, I'm excited to see if I can get up to anything interesting with that!
It's good because that's where everything starts breaking anyway
Yeah, everything is loose about it apart from the nuts… they will all be rusted solid 😂🤦♂️
@@MakingforMotorsport I've been tempted to get an induction heater. they're supposedly magical for rusty nuts and bolts, but thankfully all my vehicles leak enough that nothing is rusty.
Call it the "Dirt Merchant"
HES BACKKKK
Would make a good Targa rally car as I've seen a few compacts competing in that realm, could call it he Targ36 if you do go down that path 👍
Project Slippery M3ET
Active aero seems to be all the rage now? I think you should name it Klaus Needsbitz
Klaus Needsbitz! I like it…. Unfortuantely I don’t think he’s gonna go fast enough to need aero… but it would be fun!
Well, if it's for rallying, and it's a Bimmer, I think there's no other choice than "Project Binner"
Düsseldwarf
Can be abbreviated still to Pz! So could be Project Pz 36t 🎤💥
Ótimo !
Yay new video
Happy to oblige! 👍
Nice one! Gotta put a blower on it but not just the regular one everyone does, go for a screw type 😮😂

I've got one of these and they are just FANTASTIC driving little cars. Cant keep any of the interior stuck to it though, and the plastics are all shit. Love having a RWD hatcback bmw that weighs less than an M3 tho
ITBs that please :D
Yes! Man find stick! Gooooood stick!
I like sticks!

M45 Supercharger!

Oh yeah. It’s likely to just have to come straight off… but it’ll be fun putting it on in the first place!
