The journalist went to Idaho to live, Hemingway went there to die, although truth was he had already "died" about 2 years before that in Cuba, which he left for Idaho after 10+ years. He was not even a year in Idaho before he shot himself and in that year months were spent on two separate trips to the Mayo Clinic where he was given ECT (electroconvulsive shock therapy) 15 times. He was mesmerized w/ suicide, had to be stopped from walking into the propellers of a plane at the airport... he had 7 suicides in his family including him, his brother, sister, and father. Idaho is where his biographers got the striking B&W photos of him with the vacant look in his eyes - there is no there there anymore. JFK worked out a deal w/ the Castro govt after they began nationalizing American properties whereby Mary (wife #4) was allowed to go there and get some of this things, she remained at the Idaho house until her death in the 1980s. Mary was told to keep his guns locked up, she intentionally left the key to gun storage in the basement on the kitchen table (saying demurely she didn't think a man should be kept from his things), he shot himself in the foyer. There's a video on UA-cam of Orson Welles talking about him and Orson knew him during these Ketchum months, said he was a very, very sick man. Orson does not point out Ketchum, but the Ketchum home had a cinematic projector room and Orson relates this room in the video. Ketchum was the last hunting trip where he bagged his last game - himself.
At 2:00: She says ""Sun Also Rises" is something that he worked on while he was here in Sun Valley, that's kind of one of my favorite tributes to spending time pursuing the outdoors and a life of adventure, stepping away from urban stresses.." Hahahahaha She has NO IDEA WHAT SHE'S TALKING ABOUT? Sun Also Rises was basically about the stresses of young urbanites in Europe, cheating on each other and going to bullfights. Ie. What he was doing in Paris and Spain during the 20's!! He honestly didn't work on much writing in Idaho that we know of. He had undergone electro-convulsive shock therapy the year at the Mayo clinic he moved to Idaho full time. He had totally lost his mind while he was living in Idaho after his ECT.
Not only that, because she also said that he hated the writing process, when, in fact, he had written in several letters that that was when he was the most happy.
FYI - there's one other way into the Frank Church Wilderness. There's still a dozen or so (maintained) back country airstrips. I've heard there are other places to land too if you're brave enough. Other than that, you come down the Salmon River on a raft or hoof it in.
>>-------------------------------> My report on the Sun Valley area. I was there in 2014, and it shocked me to see and feel so cold and business like for an Idaho community. Idaho towns have hospitality about them and they are personable to people, not the Sun Valley area! No way! Why, because most of the people who live there now are stuck-up a-holes from places like California, Seattle, Denver, Chicago and New York. Papa would HATE IT there today! I've met many of the old timers that were born and lived there for decades. They're the ones who have pointed this out to me.
yup. liberals ruin everything. like a disease they ruin their own towns then spread to other organs (states) and ruin those too, until there's nothing left
What the lady said about him hating writing seems rather inaccurate considering that Hemingway himself mentioned in several letters that that was when he was the happiest.
I have no patience for ignorant humans who murder their fellow beings----One would think that they could see that all creatures should be able to enjoy this beautiful land--- However, IDAHO I love---Lived in this glorious state for 10 yrs. and still miss it!
Despite what his "guide" says, those look like rainbow stockies. The adipose fins are clipped. The only truly "wild" indigenous trout in Idaho are cutthroat trout. The Middle Fork of the Salmon is famous for its cutthroat trout, but those are not cuts that they are cooking in the pan.
Very unfortunate for Idaho to be inundated with refugees from the west coast...mostly California but also Oregon and Washington. They've ruined the mountain west.
Idaho is a jewel of a state. So beautiful
Seeing Mariel Hemingway in a parade, really great ❤️
Beautiful. Sometimes we see ourselves best through others' eyes.

Cody Thurber So true! I thought the same. Every one is an expert.
"The Sun Rises Above the Mountains" is also a translation of the word Idaho in Shoshoni i believe.
Not only that, because she also said that he hated the writing process, when, in fact, he had written in several letters that that was when he was the most happy.
Please don't give away our secrets. Idaho is cold and nasty. Not worth visiting.

So very beautiful.
Beautiful country, free and fresh 🇺🇸👍
for the rich and white 🇺🇸
He worked on the Sun Also Rises in ID? Obviously she doesn't know a thing about Hemingway.
Yes. He has not been to Idaho when writing that book. Plus, he rarely used a fly rod.
lol the book was finished in 1925 in Paris geesh lol
He wrote For Whom The Bell Tolls partly in Idaho.
Thank you for making this video.
Wonderful.
Saw a wheeler 38 at Lake coeur d leine last nite

I grew up in the Twin Falls area and I couldn't agree with you more. Most Idahoans hate Sun Valley because of the exact reason you stated.
yup. liberals ruin everything. like a disease they ruin their own towns then spread to other organs (states) and ruin those too, until there's nothing left
Because liberals are the only cold greedy ones and the tax cuts for the rich aren't passed by Republicans LMAO
We Idahoans don't really claim Sun Valley. Nobody there is from Idaho. McCall is more indicative of Idaho than Ketchum.
@@markw999 ...Shhh...
I bet that guy didn't buy a fishing license. Call the fish and game officers!!!
That's it, I would not have it any other way . I found home !!!
What is the name of final song?
@4:38....."First fish". Dude- I've cast bait bigger than that. THROW it back!

Nice work..no bell tolling for you yet mate
Nice
Those trout are tiny, we would throw them back.
On a non stick pan one needs all the fat one can get! Also it was Hemingyway's recipe - not from a 'keep fit ' era really. Guy

Progressive Nose rings trying to move in more and more from Cailf.
Californians stay out
Hemingway had only one ideology, and that was anti-fascism.
Don't forget the Tums after eating all of that grease.
