  • DOUES, ITALY: From the terrace of our house in the Valle d'Aosta we could see two abandoned houses at an altitude of 1800 m, visited by nothing but cows. The buildings in the Italian Alps appear differently than, for example, in Switzerland. This is probably because they are quite old or old techniques are still used. Typically, loose stones are stacked on top of each other with cement. The ruins now called for a small inspection to perhaps see how people lived at this height and under these conditions decades and centuries ago.
Mountain pastures, also known as alpine meadows or alpine pastures, are a vital component of the Aosta Valley in Italy. These high-altitude grazing lands are used to raise cattle, sheep, and goats, and are characterized by their stunning views and rugged terrain.
The Aosta Valley is located in the northwestern corner of Italy and is home to some of the most beautiful mountain pastures in the world. The valley is surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Alps, including Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa, and the Matterhorn. The region is known for its lush meadows, clear streams, and traditional alpine architecture.
The tradition of grazing livestock on mountain pastures dates back centuries in the Aosta Valley. Today, farmers still use these lands to raise their animals, a practice that is deeply ingrained in the culture and economy of the region. The animals are taken to the pastures in the spring, when the snow melts and the grass begins to grow, and are brought back down to the valley in the fall, when the weather turns colder. This practice is known as transhumance and is still used today.
The high-altitude grazing lands of the Aosta Valley provide a unique ecosystem that is home to a diverse array of plant and animal life. The pastures are dotted with wildflowers, including edelweiss and gentians, and are also home to many bird species, such as the golden eagle and the bearded vulture. The grazing of livestock also helps to maintain the balance of the ecosystem by preventing the growth of woody plants that would otherwise take over the meadows.
In addition to providing a home for wildlife, the mountain pastures of the Aosta Valley also play a crucial role in the production of traditional mountain cheeses, such as fontina and toma. The milk from the cows, sheep, and goats that graze on the pastures is used to make these delicious cheeses, which are a staple of the local cuisine.
The mountain pastures of the Aosta Valley are also a popular destination for tourists. Hiking and trekking trails wind through the meadows, providing visitors with breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. The traditional alpine architecture of the farmers' huts, known as "baita," are also a popular attraction. Visitors can also try their hand at traditional activities such as cheese-making and sheepherding.
In conclusion, the mountain pastures of the Aosta Valley are a vital part of the region's culture and economy. These high-altitude grazing lands provide a unique ecosystem, traditional mountain cheeses and are a popular destination for tourists. The grazing of livestock also helps to maintain the balance of the ecosystem by preventing the growth of woody plants that would otherwise take over the meadows. They are a stunning example of the beauty and diversity of the natural world and a treasure to be cherished and protected.

Many of those houses are not abandoned, they are owned by shepherds who, depending on the season graze cows at the top or bottom. Certainly they are not all owned by the shepherds. Some are of people who do not take care of them, perhaps inherited from their grandparents. If you can find the owners or by searching on the internet you can buy them like the guys did in the link below.

Perhaps it is. Many people move from there because there is no work.
