    Lenovo came out with this with students in mind! its light enough to travel with between classes and still has enough power to run software like autocad, this lighter system is also lighter on the price point. THANK YOU LENOVO

    I am a mechanical engineering student and I bought one of these recently since it has a quadro which is essential for CAD programs such as SolidWorks to run smoothly. The price of a mobile workstation like the P52 makes it less reasonable for students. This one is reasonably affordable and has many of the features I need

    Replaced my aging 17" MacBook Pro with a ThinkPad since Apple no longer makes a laptop that is either affordable or practical.
    With the extended battery, I get around 16-30 hours of life between charges, have all the ports, and the finest laptop keyboard.

    • @kamalhm-dev

      which thinkpad?

    • @Thirsty_Fox
      @Thirsty_Fox 6 років тому +8

      L470, 1080p IPS, SSD, 8 GB DDR4 (both upgradable). Got it nearly-new for the equivalent of USD $300 with 10.5 months of factory warranty left.
      So far it's been a great laptop. The trackpad is quite a bit better than I thought it would be (better than the T450S I had for a while).

      thinkpads are great since they didn't remove the design of having removable battery, most of the laptop nowadays even those high end ones have built-in non-removable battery which lost its practical purpose of reliability where you can't replace the battery easily as well as to bring extra battery when on the road.

    Have had this laptop for a few months now. Stocked with the i7-8650u cpu and 16gb ram, I work in Ps Ai Pr daily with no issues. Even rendered an animation in Blendr and it handled that well. Not the most powerful thinkpad in the lineup, but certainly beats a crapbook 😂

    The main reason this exists over the T580 is that the Quadro allows it to be ISV certified which some software companies require to get support. I would see this computer used by people who don't necessarily do the design work, so don't need the outright performance, but do need access to the software to view work or demonstrate work. Examples would be managers or sales people.
    I personally use Solidworks and they are notorious for denying support for hardware that does not meet their hardware requirements. The P52s would meet their hardware requirements but a T580 doesn't.

      565paolo o paolo565? How's battery life? What specs on your model?

    • @565paolo
      @565paolo 6 років тому

      Indy E Chery I have a 1 TB nvme ssd and 16 gb of ram, the other components are from the base model. When I'm only using it for programming, browsing, watching UA-cam or Netflix I put it in in power saving mode, which other than lowering a bit the screen brightness doesn't have any another noticeable effect to me.
      In that case the battery will last at least 8 hours, it also depends what type of programming I am doing, if I have something which constantly uses 20-30% cpu it may last a bit less. If the cpu is at 2-5% the fan may not even start.
      If I use it for playing games or video editing it lasts 2-4 hours depending on how heavy it is.
      I use davinci resolve for video editing and when I apply color grades on 4k 25 fps footage it starts to lag a bit, since this gpu is not powerful enough for 4k video editing.
      I haven't done a lot of video editing, so this might be something I did wrong, but if I try to create proxy files from 4k footage it crashes.
      Problems I had:
      - In my unit one of the hooks which allows me to remove the battery fell off, so I can't remove the battery unless I use tweezers to loosen the spring underneath, I haven't got time to contact Lenovo but I hope I don't have to send it back, since the part seems user replaceable.
      - In some situations the Edge browser freezes, but that probably has more to do with how windows works.
      I got the 48 Wh battery thinking it wouldn't stick out from the bottom of the laptop, but it does, so if you are ok with that why not just buy the 72 Wh battery? (personally I like having the battery stick out a bit).
      Anyway, I'm really satisfied with this machine.

    To answer why Lenovo indicated the LTE card must get from them is because their BIOS is locked and required both LTE card, and WiFi's FCC ID is from them. This is to guarantee the customer buy the accessory from them (pricey) instead of cheaper generic mini PCI-x, NVMe adapters.
    It has been a long history of notebook vendors doing this locking including HP, Acer, etc. If you insert a non-Lenovo adapter, the boot up screen will ask you to remove it in order to continue booting

    Dear Lenovo, You are doing it wrong, Just bring the old Thinkpad keyboards back and don't try to make everything thin like Apple, we need a special device, a thicker one with more ports and better battery life. it's easy you can do this.

    • @Vlad-1986
      @Vlad-1986 6 років тому +8

      Making it thin means a tradeoff with ports and upgradeability or even makes it impossible to fix it yourself. Everyone is making them thin and there is a demand for working machines but no company is filling the gap completly. I have a L570 which is nice to play some games with and good if I am going to be out of mains power for a long time, but my principal computer still is my 2005 T60.... and is not like I wouldn't love a more powerful computer, but simply the newer ones feel like a downgrade.

      @a_pakhomov 6 років тому +1

      I find P50 keyboard better as T61 (small tiny esc, whitespace works only in the middle) and x220 (better layout but worse keys and not rigid), so some people like it this way. 4:3 would be great, though, would buy 14" 4:3

    I've been using this laptop around the house for business for 2 years. Glad i paid for the premier warranty. The motherboard has been replaced twice due to faulty charging ports, the power cable has been replaced 4 times due to bad connections. Keyboard replaced twice, --keys kept popping off. Laptop performs well with 24 gigs of ram and an SSD drive. I am not a fan of the USB-C charging ports... based on the issues mentioned.

    Hi, Lisa and everyone else in the comment section. I am struggling to find the right laptop. I need a new one from next week on and I still haven't found "the one". Let me tell you quickly what I NEED: 16gb ram (upgradable) , at least 512 gb SSD (upgradable) , good speakers, a 4k display that is suited for video and photo editing, max. 2-2,5 kg, battery up to 10 hours preferred. And this is what I would like to DO with my laptop: Ableton Live music production with loads of vsts, video editing with Davinci Resolve, taking the laptop outside the house several times a week and watching tv series/movies/.... So the ones I like are Dell XPS 15, Lenovo Thinkpad T580 and P52s. Razer Blade 15 is also pretty amazing but too expensive. I don't wanna spend any more than about 2,000€ (around 2,350 USD) though (I am a uni student, so yeah). I would like my laptop to last for at least 5 years. Don't care too much about looks - more interested in the power and build quality.
    So I considered the ASUS ZenBook Pro 15 in the beginning (without touch trackpad), however, I didn't like the build quality and that you cannot upgrade it to 32 gb ram in the future.
    Dell XPS 15 is a pretty good deal but I don't like the webcam (wtf, Dell!), the speakers are meh and it doesn't seem it would be good enough for 4k video editing right? Build quality is super and I really like the keyboard but Idk...
    Lenovo... I have never had a Lenovo but I am so in love with them (build quality, upgradable, power, reliable, ...). HOWEVER I don't know how well the T580 or P52s are suited for video editing and watching tv series etc.. Their displays are not really suited for these things, right? Plus, I don't know whether their graphics cards are any good (don't know much about graphics cards - there are so many different types - help! :o).
    Btw, not interested in getting a Surface Book - just not getting on board with the 2 in 1 stuff. Speaking of "book", no MacBooks please!
    So nooooow, my question is: Is anybody out there who can recommend a laptop that will fulfill my requirements? Lisa, maybe you? I trust you more than anybody to be honest :D Your reviews are always the best - very detailed and professional.
    Looking forward to hearing from you guys.
    - Kat

  • @martyg2333

    What I will be getting this for is strictly IT related. I want to run a network simulator on it called GNS3. I'm getting the base RAM and storage, then upgrading aftermarket with a Samsung 1TB 970 Pro M.2 and Corsair Vengeance 2x 16GB sticks of RAM. You can save a TON of money by purchasing the base config and just upgrading it on your own, which is what I will be doing. The only thing I'm somewhat worried about is the under powered CPU. It is an i7 but like Lisa said it's more of an ultra book i7. Still deciding but I'm leaning more towards this than the ridiculously expensive P52 and the Dell Precision Workstations. I've heard the newer 6 core CPU's have some overheating issues which is why I"m learning more towards a low powered CPU. Beefy CPU's in laptops are pretty sketchy if you ask me. Too many risks for overheating.

    In most applications the i7-8550U performance is close to the 7700HQ. This means it has the functional performance of an older generation workstation. This generations i7 U processors are solid workstation options for most applications, IMO.

    I love your videos! I do have a question though: will you be doing a review video on the X1 Extreme (or maybe a smackdown between dell and the X1 Extreme)? I'm a bit put off on Dell due to thermal and bloat (and Lenovo has that toughness reputation). This wouldn't be for gaming, but blender, and adobe cc.

    So much better than the p53s/t590.... last model with a swappable battery, last model with power bridge for hot swapping batteries. Better battery life and arguably better performance than the model that replaced it. Two sodimm slots for memory, no soldered on memory like the t590/p53s... 2.5" drive bay. better thermals.

    As you effectively say, next to no difference with the T580 - even the graphics card basically same as the T580 option. And pricing (without offers) seems to be much the same with the T580 being maybe a percent or two cheaper.
    Even so, likely a good development machine when maxed out with ram and ssd for most developers.

    I will try to explain why this may be one of the best choices for professional users.
    I work in the laser scanning industry, where "mobile workstation" does not exist as a type of a machine for work. You can calculate some basic projects, but serious work with industrial objects, like industrial complexes or civil engineering is just impossible.
    I have my desktop workstation with i9 9940x and 128 gigs of ram, water cooling and etc. And this laptop. I take it to my work trips, to my objects, to make some on-site pre-processing of field data, sometimes in a construction dust, or oily metallic mist. I can change the battery fast if needed, and it is much more rigid than any ultra-book, but light enough to carry it entire day in your hands, opened and working.

    Just looking for a laptop to work, esentially, with resource demanding ArcGIS systems. I began thinking about the XI Carbon series but wouldn't be this one a better choice? Any other suggestions? I'm a bit lost. This is a machine that I'll use for a living not for hobby stuff. I can't fail at this stage. Thanks in advance!

      Hi-Fi Insider Sadly, no. I'd rather get a librebooted T400s with an extension bay than overpay for this 25th anniversary ThinkPad

      T25 was a marketing exercise, they didnt put anything that the fans requested, nt even the keyboard they made sort of a mix of what fans desired and what they didnt want. it has sub par components, meaning old generation graphics and old gen CPU.

    This comment is probably too late for any good, but I have one of these laptops at the office and one for home. Both of them heat throttles even when streaming Netflix, much less any real workload. My experience definitely isn't in line with what your review states.

    Hi, I just bought LenovoThinkPadP52sWorkstation. One problem. The screen got black. Upon pressing the power 🔋 button, the system starts and shows where it was before the black screen. How 🤔 to fix it? Thanks ✅️

    how do I make numpad working with Fn key? Recently manufacturers started to ommit the emulated numpad on JKLUIO keys, which worked as numbers while Fn key is pressed. I rely on numbers in my daily and professional life, also English is my third language and I need top number row for other languages.
    I have tried AutoHotKey, which is a very nice piece of software, but is unable to detect key combinations if Fn is involved (detects Fn itself just fine).
    So, what do I do? I am definitely not going to buy an external numpad and carry around, or use an OSD numpad, as suggested by manufacturers... I need a software solution.
    Lenovo was so kind to let us swap Ctrl and Fn keys, but will it let us have a very useful function back?

      I was just thinking the Lenovo P1. I’ve had my S1 Yoga for a while now and has certainly put out its worth and much more. I was thinking a full sized keyboard would be nice on my next laptop but the off center keyboard is pretty yucky at times.

    I want to give you a few tips to make your videos better.
    When you’re showing b-roll of the product and talking over it, try to sync what you’re talking about to what’s currently being showed to me, the viewer. Also when you were explaining different battery types, it would have been nice to see all 3 of those options right in the laptop one after another as you were saying them
