They look fantastic nigel. How long did they last? I'm just about running out of space for wagons now. I'll probably get some heljan 35t tanks but that will have to be it
Forgot to mention that doh! I think the only ones that made it into the 1970’s were BR standards. As traffic moved to road transportation these diag 1/246 vans were the last in revenue earning service. A few lasted until ‘79 and maybe early 1980. Quite a lot found use as barrier wagons for a while but all were gone by 83? Some lingered on until the late 80’s as stores vans on depots and sidings.
Came back for another look at this episode to understand the complete build, fascinating, knowledge of the prototype is so important, both in real life, and within the 4mm world. I bought four Lima 42’ LMS parcel vans on the strength of your episode regarding the same, and it’s been a journey of research and development since, strangely rewarding however. Thanks again. TPO, yes please
Stumbling across this video was a surprise! I paid a visit to that same hobby store a couple months ago. In addition, banana vans (and reefers in general) are some of my favorite railway rolling stock. I do have a few packs of Accurascale banana vans in my collection but you've shown me a cheaper way to make my own on top of throwing around many banana puns! Cheers!
Good job as ever Nigel, I continue to be inspired by your weathering techniques and all the little details that really make a difference, thanks for sharing.
Stunning Results 🙌🏻 that Not every modeller is capable of achieving, but Personally at such a reasonable Price I would be tempted to learn as opposed to fork out £85 for three wagons! - I like seeking out older wagons, as you did with the Wrenn, and Refinish/Refurbish to an Nice Standard which Suits my Satisfaction levels & Parsimonious Nature 😉😁
"Tra la la. tra la lal la" You've got the Banana Splits song playing in my head now. It's probably as old as the tooling for those wagons. The finished vans look pretty good to me Nigel. I'm a devotee of repurposing and improving older models so this was an awesome bit of work. Cheers!
Haha @@Wallsrail !!! You need to follow my lead. After 46 years of full shift work I started jobshare with my colleague in September. It's great. I always try to book some leave in November so leave and jobshare means I have only done 3 days in November !!! Anyway Nigel - question for you - which brown do you use for Bauxite please ? I notice you use Tamiya XF68 "not brown" for the base coat but spraying over ther masking squares the colour seems lighter and richer. Thanks again
Good evening Mr train man 😀 That was a great build and shows how can make a realistic banana 🍌 van cheaper than the RTR model but knowing you’ve done a good job 👍🏻
Excellent video of the BR plywood 1/246 Banana van Nigel, thank you. As a fan of Banana vans I have done a few myself. So next please make the Ratio PC541 BR Banana van to diag 1/242 . This is easy to convert to 1/243, or 1/244 and adds some variety to your rake, whilst not scaling the cost heights of Accurascale. You'll have all the information in your excellent rolling stock library. Someone makes Geest, or Fyffes scale posters to stick on the van sides, depending on which port they landed, and to which ripening depot they were going to. There are some interesting threads on these vans on RMWeb. Oxford make an ex-GER Banana van in BR Bauxite, I've yet to see one in my old books of Banana trains leaving Southampton docks so haven't invested in one yet. I converted a Bachmann SR even plank box van into a SR 10T Banana van to diag 1479. Upon completion Accurascale announced their production of 1478 and 1479 diagram vans..... which I still bought.
I did not realize that the flat sides were plywood. I thought they were metal. Seen them in the sixties delivering actual Bananas to the Barras Wholesale Market in Coventry.
Hello, can you please let me know where you purchased your JLC razor saw, as I am having difficulty locating a supplier in the UK? Thank you in advance.

Another great video, i do like kit building wagons and perticuley like your weathering approach especially the old patches for the advertisements 👌
What a fantastic episode, the background, the build list, the comparison, the build detail.
My thanks to you for sharing this amazing piece of work
That mixed rake looks class!
It’s always a good project to bring older tooling back into the fray

I should’ve hummed that in the video 😂
Thanks very much Nigel for another inspiration loaded video.
I love your work and keep checking every week for more.
Trying to get more content out. But that thing called a job keeps getting in the way 😂

I really enjoyed that and I'm looking forward to your next one regarding TPO's and the kind and number of vehicles that made up a typical train.

Will probably get around to them one day as they fall outside my sphere of interest, but only just. Would be a side project like ive done before....
They do look excellent.. great job..
Marvellous as always

Love this video, any updates on the Class 31, the Decapod and of course your layout
Fond regards Rob
Yes working on all of those things at the moment. Hopefully have one video of one of those topics before Christmas
Fantastic weathering, any chance of a tutorial video on mgr wagon weathering?
Maybe in the future 🤔👍
What a great job, has given me a few ideas (plagiarising) yours 🤣👍👍🚂
Superb modelling there, as always. Love the humour too. Was there actually any Wren wagon left at the end of the build? 😅
Sort of. I used the body and gave the chassis to a friend.
@Wallsrail 😂😂
Cracking how to as usual....did you have radio on in background? Thought I could hear bananrama!😃😏 I'll get my coat!
😂 🍌 😂🍌😂🍌😂
very impressive, I find your wagon builds very soothing! What did yu use for the roofs on the yellow tree.. urrrm banana wagons?
Hi there, probably been asked before, but can you please let me know where you purchased the JLC razor saw?

Thank you in advance.
Had mine some time. Bought it from Scale model shop www.scalemodelshop.co.uk
They are older than forty years, more like sixty years old being tooled by Hornby dublo.
Believe the HD Banana Van came out in 1960 or 61. Still a relavent wagon as Nigel has shown.
