  • Learning the basic movements and positions in the KSL Shot Cycle or NTS System is critically important in setting up a basis to build off of. Archery is about body control and learning how to make movements happen with control is what every archer strives for. I break down how to move from set to set-up properly, keeping your posture as you raise the bow. I also show you how to start properly drawing your bow back with the right movements that will keep you injury free as an archer for decades to come.

Jake this is great. Everything you are describing, posture wise, is exactly the same thing that is taught in high level Chinese martial arts by all the better masters. What it allows and contributes to with the proper structure is “linkage”. “Linkage” is the optimized use of muscle groups across and surrounding all joints, until the body is collectively working as one unified mass. That allows more muscles to be employed at once for any one action. More power < > less injury.

Thanks for the reminder about the hips. My coach from years ago did tell me this but somehow I’ve fallen out of the habit. I read my diary from years ago just now and it actually said “thrust forward and squeeze butt cheeks!”

The tucked hips, extended and flexed legs, chest in position is called a hollow body position, used extensively in many calisthenics / gymnastics exercises
    Might help in your explanation

Impressive content as always Mr. Kaminski!!! I have somewhat of a pressing question as I have seen that the problem I am having has the potential for serious problems. Lately, whenever I am drawing, my head is turning with my draw arm. I have tried to solve this by tensing and locking my neck and trying to reach the right position but realized that it causes a lot of stress on the entire system. Is there any way to fix this or is some neck tension good for the form? Thank you so much!

Hi Jake, thanks so much for posting this. Going from Set to Set-Up is EXACTLY what I'm struggling with now, mostly because I suspect I've got some impingement issues on the draw shoulder side. The shoulder won't move smoothly into position to draw back and it feels like it's jamming up or crunching through something if I try and force the move. If I reverse arms and mimic a draw motion with the other shoulder, it moves smoothly, so it definitely seems to be some structural issue with my draw shoulder. I guess I should get that seen to by a physiotherapist. :/
The slight pre-draw motion to pull the string away from brace height is a revelation and it's something that I'm going to try as I think trying to lift while being at too close to brace height might be exacerbating the shoulder problem.
Based on your advice here, I also think it's time for me to invest in a cheap, light training bow specifically for working on form issues without the full draw weight of my main bow.
Thanks again for stressing the important form pointers throughout this video. This video is absolute GOLD, definitely one of your very best.

Just an update - I tried this at the range this afternoon and for the first time, I was able to draw without pain or that locking/grinding sensation in my draw shoulder. I ended up shooting 101 arrows without it feeling like my shoulder had been through a meat grinder by the end of the day. Drawing away from brace height when going from Set to Set-Up has been a game changer for me. Thanks again!

I have a problem, when i am at full draw and i expand the sight pin is way lower than the target and i have to fight to get it back to the center and most if the time i fail and i shot low, is that a bow arm issue of set/setup error

It's unfortunate but being good in archery takes a lot of work. Being really good takes a whole lot of work. There are no shortcuts but starting with proper technique and training will eliminate wasted time. I'm a DIY type guy but looking back on my archery journey it would have gone quicker if I had had access to good coaching. If a person is serious about getting good then find a good coach to help.

What my coach has me do is get into set position raise my stretch band or bow, then rotate. It looks like you raise the bow and rotate at the same time. I tried that and got super frustrated. The way she describes it is your bow arm is kind of off to the left (if you're a right handed shooter) and you look through the bow string or stretch band then you rotate your upper body and your draw hand naturally come down, in, then up into anchor. I am seriously confused now.
I'd be able to explain better if I sent you a video and had you critique my form.

Sounds like something I'm currently trying to correct with my form. I'm going from set to set-up without pulling the string at all (only left arm straight, at eye level, back and left arm not in-line) , and then 'unfold' with my whole back and right arm to get to anchor.
It's getting the left wrist, left shoulder and right shoulder into line and drawing into anchor in one move, and I think it's hard on my left shoulder (hurts after 2 hours of shooting). My coach said it's 'an ok way to draw', so I didn't care too much at first.
What Jake shows here should put less strain on the left shoulder, since it'll be in alignment already before one draws to full length.
