@@MadameChristie honestly when I saw it live at that level under the chandelier, it really looks like it’s gonna fall on top of you. One of the coolest parts of the play lol

I have seen the show several times and still was shocked over the size and speed of that coming down! People in the seats right below screamed and some tried to Get out of their seats. It was awesome!
i all was love it when the chandelier falls on the audience its a whole other felling but when it just slowly dangles towards the stage it ruins it for me
3:00 when I went to the Phantom for the first time, not knowing anything, this is about how fast the chandelier came down. I was sitting in a back row, so when I saw it come down, I screamed because I thought it was actually falling. I can't wait to experience that moment again.
The last production of Phantom of the Opera that I went to here in Tulsa this was exactly how the chandelier crash went and I and the woman to the right of me we're right under where it 'crashed'. She and some other people near her were terrified and screamed and shrieked and tried to get under their seats, it was hysterical! I have seen the production so many times with the chandelier crash fashion so many slightly different ways that I just turned and looked at it as it crashed and kind of giggled a little bit. The fact that it slightly tilts towards the audience as it comes down really sells the idea that it’s a real almost free fall crash 3:43 Poland non replica revival 2019 A LOT of pyro to simulate the lights bursting and that final blast to simulate the chandelier shattering into pieces
1:50 is a good one with timing as well, 2:04 had good lighting, 4:11 also had really good lighting and timing, and 4:42 looks like it’s sooooooo much better than the old uk/us tours they used
I looked into it, and it seems the "original" West End production may really be gone. It seems the set will be a mix of the original and the 2020 restaged tour (the golden angel is gone), and the chandelier will be similar to the newer straight drop tour version(non-collapsible) but look more like the original chandelier. The only "original" show will be on Broadway, especially if you want to see the original chandelier.
Yep, it's why I made this video, to look back on what we had and to get an idea of what we might be getting (the modified UK tour chandelier crash at the end).
Damn...the original will always be the best. Let's just hope that they really oomf the chandelier's design up and not make it look like they rented it from a cheap-ass hotel.
From what I’ve heard, the 2020 modified tour is almost exactly the same of the original London with a few tiny modifications. I know that the proscenium is different but the sets are generally the same. The new chandelier was made to look closer to Maria’s original design but unfortunately they couldn’t get it constructed in time.
@@tobyfinney768 Based on reviews from phans, it's closer to London than the restaged tour, but not as close as the modified World Tour; the split is something like 75% the same, 25% differences. A few lyrics and orchestrations have been altered (some of it seems taken from the restaged tours), a couple costumes are changed, there's no Golden Angel but instead a Pegasus statue, things like that. It's not enough for me to call it a restaging, but I'm not sure I'd call it a replica either. Hence, "modified".
Thanks for making this video! The chandelier crash is one of my absolutely fav parts of the show. That Poland-non replica one looks pretty cool. The Norway one reminds me of Vegas. I miss that production all the time! Sitting under it was some of the most exhilarating theater experiences I ever had. Makes me wonder how unsatisfying HMT might be in the future.
I didn’t know they were doing that restaged version as early as 2012. I didn’t even know till it existed until I bought tickets to the tour in 2020 and noticed how different it was. I’m amazed it wasn’t bigger news.
Well it was big news in 2012-2013 when the restaged UK and US tours were starting, especially if you were in the fandom. If you weren't and didn't even know it existed until then, that's probably the reason why you never heard about it until 2020.
Even as a tour in Chicago un the 90s they had the collapsed chandelier that drives towards the stage. But that's much better than the re-staging they have done
Norway Non-Replica was by far the best. Similar style to the Vegas version in having a HUGE chandelier which actually drops downwards into a blackout rather than so many that are an underwhelming slow lowering which then swings at the stage. The Modified 2020 UK tour would've been good too if it'd dropped earlier and FASTER. I'd love to see some new idea on staging where they could really make that chandelier drop terrifying and more effective!
I love the original staging production, when that thing came crashing down it was wild. Absolutely amazing and crazy good. It’s an experience meant to be seen live. I believe NYC has the staging I recall seeing not sure about the touring production groups anymore as most have told me it stops just above the audience heads compared to the quick slide over audience heads as it takes for the stage to crash 💥
I remember going to watch this in high school like 2 or 3 years ago in San Francisco and I’ve never watched the stage version but my friend told me it fell on the stage. But they did what the Norway production did where it drops over then stops and I remember it freaking me out cuz of how cool it was.
If you saw it 2 or 3 years ago in San Francisco then you saw the restaged tour production, which is different from the original and accordingly features a different chandelier fall. That's why it didn't drop to the stage, but instead dropped and stopped over the audience heads.
The first time I ever saw POTO I was terrified because a year or so prior the chandelier in my house fell!!! Almost right on top of me!!! I was 4 years old at the time and then probably saw the show around 6 years old. My mom warned me it would happen and that it was fake, but I still wanted to leave the theater during that part because I was so scared!
I hope the US starts doing it like the newest UK version. It would be really amazing to see the non-replica chandelier too! That one would be terrifying to see come crashing down!
In the Brazilian version, the fall of the chandelier was greater, due to the size of the theater (one of biggtest we have) it was incredible. Almost two years of season with sold out tickets in both productions. Saudades! 💛💚
I saw it in London in 1998, knew nothing about the show so had zero expectations, and the chandelier made me jump and scream. And my mother and her friends laugh and laugh. I wish I could find a video of that one bc my POV memory is hazy at best. Norway clip seems accurate. I really thought it was going to land on us!
The London one hasn't changed at all, so really any video of the London production's chandelier crash will do! Norway's is pretty different from London in that it actually drops almost on the audience, whereas the London chandelier swings down over the audience but lands on the stage (though I'm sure emotionally and depending on where you were sitting, it might have FELT like it was going to land on you).
@@PrismsofGlass thank you for this! Yes, it is difficult to remember now. I was 19 years old, and a very young 19 at that. I know enough now to not trust my memory on this. No stranger to the stage, I know what I saw so I jumped up and had to fight my way through the intermission crowd so upset and in tears of concern heading to the front access to the stage manager to find out if the actors were okay. 10 minutes or so I found the manager and explained what I had seen and I had to see if they were alright. He took me into the stage office and waited as he investigated. I never acted this way before. On return he assured me that the actress was just fine and thanked me personally for caring so much. You can, but I've already done London in a previous video, so I probably won't use it. But London's chandelier fall is quite fast compared to its counterpart on Broadway!
As cool as the non-replicas look and as superior as they may be overall to the original, they all really have an equal effect on the audience. The non-replicas add a bit of real terror but I don't really see that as a good thing. Your life is in the hands of the people who put the show together and there is trust with the original because it is time tested and almost guaranteed to never fail. The nonreplicas are done very professionally but at the back of your mind you know those versions have had very limited exposure and the mechanics behind them have not been perfected so I'll take the original over the other ones.
I completely agree with you actually. There's something about the chandelier enchanting us and "pulling" us into the Phantom's theater at the intro and trusting it/her ("Ruthie"!) during the entire first act as she hovers over us the entire time... for the chandelier to crash into the audience feels almost like a betrayal, an attack, and it misplaces the Phantom's rage at being toward us, and not toward the characters.
Christine's dancing doesn't vary too much from actress to actress, or even from production to production, unless you're counting non-replicas. If you want, I've made gifsets comparing the dances that pretty much cover all the replica versions.
Am going to see Phantom next week in Melbourne hope the chandelier drop is as good as Norways ! going with inlaws who know nothing about this show so would great if they get a fright !
Guys, you should incluye the Madrid's 2023/24 version, different to each of these already known ones but also impressive. I don't want to describe it as spoiler but must be seen.
Not that this was shown here, but I HATED the way the 25th anniversary production went. The chandelier was basically just a light fixture not a chandelier, and it sparked... That was all. Also digital backgrounds were popular then and with the closeups on the actors, they would Pixilate
It wasn't really due to popularity but the fact that the venue was very unfriendly for Phantom. The 25th anniversary is more like an acted out concert than another production.
I literally came back from a show and the crash was SO underwhelming, the chandelier just got lowered super slow a meter in the air, I whish it was something like that
I believe that the lack of a chandelier fall was the original intent to make the show more tour-able, but the decision was unpopular with audiences so they changed it to a falling chandelier when the tour went to the US.
hmmmm... ok, first: thx for the upload, of course. then: I dunno how to put it... but wow, are these "crashes" lame. none of them is really creative and/or spectacular (ok, I got mercy on poland with its speed and crashing sound). and why do all phantoms sound like tarzan or like market criers taking a dump?
1) because they are supposed to be screaming “Go!” 2) Most of these are in different languages, making “go” sound different bc it’s a different word. 3) Safety precautions from the theaters and countries are different so there are different fall speeds, and different crash effects.
@@queenofrandomthings4920 'bout no.1: I would find it way creepier if the phantom would stay silent. 'bout no.3: maybe. but some of these chandeliers crashes are so slowly that it totally kills the suspense. don't get me wrong here: I have already problems with how the scene is played: why would erik send the chandelier after christine in the first place??? according to the story, erik loves her and would never endanger her. and secondly, according to the story, he wanted to punish the audience and the opera staff. thus, throwing the chandelier after christine makes even less sense.
@@phoneguy4637 he send the chandelier crashing down to Christine because she betrays by getting engaged to Raoul during “All I Ask Of You”. His last words in the reprise of “All I Ask Of You” are “ You will curse the day you did not do, all that the Phantom asked of you.”
@@jammyd1817 the thing is that the musical- and opera version of the novel swapped chronological events in attempt to give erik a reason to send the chandelier towards christine. in the novel, the proposal between christine and raoul happens long AFTER the chandelier crash. erik "just" kidnaps her into his lair and forces her into marriage. when christine ditches erik for good, he dies from heart attack.

Ok tf the screen was just lame
Agreed
Opening the backdrop curtain to let the chandelier through ruins the effect by anticipating it.
@glassprism were did you get the footage for Sweden’s 1991 phantom of the opera?
One of the people who used to work in the production posted the video of the whole show to UA-cam. I ripped it from UA-cam before it was taken down.
Norway 2019 easily the most impressive for me!
Love Phantom and this channel! Could you please do a comparison video of Christine's "Masquerade" dance?
Christine's dancing doesn't vary too much from actress to actress, or even from production to production, unless you're counting non-replicas. If you want, I've made gifsets comparing the dances that pretty much cover all the replica versions.
Interesting compilation
Is Phantom in Swedish Revival Peter Joback?!
In the Swedish revival clip, yes. In the Swedish clip from 1991, it's Mikael Samuelson.
@@PrismsofGlass thx!! Just saw reply.
Am going to see Phantom next week in Melbourne hope the chandelier drop is as good as Norways ! going with inlaws who know nothing about this show so would great if they get a fright !
What's up with Gothenburg one???
do a curtain call comparison!!!
Guys, you should incluye the Madrid's 2023/24 version, different to each of these already known ones but also impressive. I don't want to describe it as spoiler but must be seen.
I wanna see the Norway non-replica irl, and I wanna sit right under it so I can feel like it's gonna fall on me! 😂💎
San Francisco 1998, Poland, and Norway were TERRIFYING
Not that this was shown here, but I HATED the way the 25th anniversary production went. The chandelier was basically just a light fixture not a chandelier, and it sparked... That was all. Also digital backgrounds were popular then and with the closeups on the actors, they would Pixilate
I know I heard the recording first and I thought it would fall but then I got mad when it just sparked
It wasn't really due to popularity but the fact that the venue was very unfriendly for Phantom. The 25th anniversary is more like an acted out concert than another production.
I kind of like the 🇳🇴 because it's boom boom and then crash
The Norway one is how I imagined it.
I literally came back from a show and the crash was SO underwhelming, the chandelier just got lowered super slow a meter in the air, I whish it was something like that
I wonder how many replica Ruthie chandeliers have been made ever since all over the world
Poland non replica is definitely the most realistic so far
This is the most cheapest one- 1:10
Why does the UK tour Chandelier not fall, but the US tour's does?
I believe that the lack of a chandelier fall was the original intent to make the show more tour-able, but the decision was unpopular with audiences so they changed it to a falling chandelier when the tour went to the US.

The Austrian one was bad. They had no chandelier for the crash.
Yeah I peed my pants from Poland.
Omg!!! YEEE
Norway wins for realism.
poland non replica revival 2019 served
The non replica no. 1 lol
Am early 😁
That Austria concert one was cool
UFO is real
hmmmm... ok, first: thx for the upload, of course. then: I dunno how to put it... but wow, are these "crashes" lame. none of them is really creative and/or spectacular (ok, I got mercy on poland with its speed and crashing sound). and why do all phantoms sound like tarzan or like market criers taking a dump?
1) because they are supposed to be screaming “Go!”
2) Most of these are in different languages, making “go” sound different bc it’s a different word.
You call it lame but obviously you've never been underneath the crashing chandelier. When your underneath where it starts crashing it's not lame.
The restaged version is TRASH
