This aired on Wednesday, June 19, 1968. The next evening, the guests were Ed Sullivan, Walter Matthau, Nancy Wilson and James Brown. Now I would LOVE to see THAT episode!!
Just think folks,1 month before this, Mr Carson was holidays and John Lennon + Paul McCartney showed up and Missed Johnny. What a total disaster and a shame that Johnny wasn't there that night!!
McCartney eventually appeared again on the Tonight Show in 1984 with a cake for Johnny. IIRC, it was on Johnny's birthday. That was considered a bit of an event at the time.
Priceless. I've always loved Ed Sullivan stories. Everybody in this era of showbiz seems to have a TON of them. And he's absolutely right about Barmitzvah. They've gone from holy to glitzy. Anything from the NYC years is a treat and if it's color and broadcast quality... you just made my day!!
As a kid, watching Alan King on Ed Sullivan was always a treat. While I probably didn't understand a lot of what Alan was saying as an 8 year old in 1964, just the way he said things along with his facial experiments made me laugh out loud. In 7th grade, a few months after this video, in spring 1969, for the last hour of Friday's class, my teacher read us Alan's book "Help! I'm a prisoner in a Chinese bakery!" over the course of a month. It was hilarious!!! Thanks for the remembories!!!
I was Bar Mitzvahed in the same temple as Alan's son - exactly two weeks earlier (June 1). I went to the temple the day of his son's Bar Mitzvah to, OK, gawk a little and pray a little. Had Johnny or Ed actually attended as King suggests, I would not have recognized them as I didn't start watching the Tonight Show until the next year. I do remember seeing King sitting in the same front row my parents had sat in 2 weeks earlier. Kind of neat. For Alan King fans, there's a UA-cam clip ( ua-cam.com/video/p_DgxAlEdvs/v-deo.html) of him doing a joke about his Uncle Yoel - 'no-shit Yoel'. Notice the use of the very same Rabbi Chuck in that joke. So there's shtick here, but the Bar Mitzvah definitely happened - I was there!
Yes it's the "needle drop" production music used by Carson Productions to mask the expensive music Skitch Henderson and the NBC Orchestra used on the original.
@@dw438 - This was 1968, by then Doc Severinsen was leading the orchestra. It is most glaring, this insert, because this videotape was preserved from an NBC affiliate, given the audio quality which screams 5 kHz telco (Class A/B - frequency response: 100 Hz - 5000 Hz).
Alan King was before my real awareness as a kid. Always seemed to be one of the major comics probably because he Was on Ed Sullivan 58 times. But this interview was very informative and I thought it was great!
Keep the 60’s broadcasts coming in! I wish the ones before 68 were still being videotaped, but the taping of shows came at a certain time in the 60’s, even give us some Kinescopes!
You'll notice that the Tonight Show Orchestra has been replaced with overdubbed applause and cheesy lounge music. I would guess it had something to do with music copyright issues. The same thing is true for the Friars Club/Dean Martin Celebrity Roast shows that were released on DVD some years back. They seem to reference the fact that the band probably played "And The Angels Sing" in the opening seconds of their conversation. Probably a great trumpet solo by Doc in that performance.
The band's intro has been nixed and replaced here, I think. Is this a Jeff Sotzing issue? So frustrating that NBC hurled most of these into the furnace.

Thanks for your
I myself bought this show in a download from the Carson site.

Superb footage here. I enjoy seeing the Tonight Show from its New York days. Most of the video is sadly gone now.
The video quality is quite good.
I loved him in the 1985 Stephen King movie Cat’s Eye
Wow this is rare stuff, Thanks,
Thanks for uploading this! Do you have the whole episode?
Great to see this thanks
When Johnny still had dark hair and looked so young. I think he was about 36 here.
Johnny was 42 at the time (born in 1925)
He was born in 1925.
Where are these shows being found from. I thought they were all destroyed.
How did you get this. Amazing.
Smoke that cigarette!

Johnny would turn 43 that October.
Johnny would turn 43 that October.
They would crucify you now if you smoke on tv now
People thought this guy was 'funny'.
He was just rude, very rude to the general public.
Johnny Carson was great.

Most of the early Tonight Shows were either wiped to recycle the tape, or burned to save storage costs.
Rabbi Chuck my ass, Rabbi Chuck also buried his uncle. 😂
One of my moms favorite comedians.

before television turned to shit.
I don't recall alan king on the tonight show since this. odd.
Nothing odd there...your memory just has a dozen or two holes.

Ed was 6 ' 3 fyi, Raquel is whoa...
All I can say is I wish it was June 19th, 1968 and I know what I know now. That's what I wish.
