A point of intrest for those that do not know. The blade is that length so that when being used as a bayonet it is long enough to do damage after going through web equipment and flak type jackets. I have both models, great multi-use knives and great value for money.
My archery side carry knife for decades has been my Dad's old Swiss M1916 saw back bayonet. Blade length was 19" but, this was broke at 7.7"and the tip re-shaped to the original. Heavy, awesome steel, and incredible craftsmanship. I suspect that a relative brought it home from WW1 or WW2. It is a great side companion while toting a recurve bow in bear/cougar country.
Like it. Sounds a bit like my Dads friends WW1 Lee Enfield bayonet gifted to me. It was cut down and used for gardening and hog sticking. Nice knife and they sure made bayonets strong back then. I got a decent leather sheath made up and got it cleaned up and treat it with the respect it deserves
I was told the saw teeth were added to serve as a root saw. The Glock E-Tool has a wood saw blade in the handle. The combination of the two allows a soldier to to have both a true wood saw and something to get through thick rough roots with his knife.
I had the biggest grim when I saw the title of this video! Its one of my favorite knives I've ever owned! Definitely a very reliable tool!! Great content brother!!
Thanks for your review. Glock knives are well known and often discussed in the european knife and outdoor communitys.I like them and I own 3 modell 78 here in Germany. The 78 is in use in a couple european armys, for example, like you already mentioned in Austria , also in use in the Norwegian army and the German GSG9 unit uses it - it is a proven design. No modell 81 are in army use because of the- pretty useless-saw on the back . I was 16 when the 78 came on the market and it was at that time a pretty revolutionary thing.Kydex was not heard of yet. They are very good military knives and are darn tough .You can bent the pretty fine tip if you do stupid things but overall they are very strong. Despite the very short tang they do not break and i have not yet seen one that failed at the handle tang connection. They are cheap and reliable . You have not mentioned that they are - for the size knife- very lightweight and that is a bonus. From the factory they come not very sharp but you can get them razor sharp with little effort. Edge holding is nothing to speak of... it is ok and good enough for its intended purpose. Pair it with a decent pocket knife for fine cutting and you are set. Hardness is around 55 to 56 rc. It is not 1095 hc as often said ,the steel feels more like a 1075 or even a bit lower. Rust resistance is not good, you need to maintain it, especially once the cheap coating is gone. All in all a very good military knife , a good stabber and i guess a very good fighter with decent capability for an all around knifelike tool. A good beater knife. I would recommend it.
The Glock knives are awesome, but their shovel ain't great!!! The best shovel is the cold steel special forces or spetsnaz shovel. I have been beating on my cold steel shovel for years and it was about 20 bucks with sheath. When I'm not out in the woods it pulls double duty as the main fireplace tool and does the kindling splitting as well.
@@Wildwestwrangler I’ve got two Glock Shovels that I got for Christmas but I haven’t had time to use them. However, I’ve inspected them closely and decided I can trust them enough to keep them in my vehicles. The built in saw is actually pretty heavy duty.
Thanks for the review on this knife. It's well known in Europe of course, but not exactly on most lists here in the US. I've had this model for almost eight years, and have literally attacked heavy brush in my woods where I live. My place easily can get quite overgrown if neglected. The knife now is part of my vehicle carry kit in a small tote container in my trunk. It's earned my trust so to speak, in that I've put it through some harsh tasks. And failure, apparently, was not designed into this knife. It's tough. 👍
Could not be better timing on this video. Picked up the OD green Glock 81 back when I was a teenager and it has always been my favorite field/utility blade. It goes everywhere with me. I just recently purchased 2 more to have put up and I kid you not they were just delivered an hour ago. I see you up there Gaston.. 💪🏻 I keep a small fine diamond stone from DMT attached to the back of the sheath with ranger bands and a wad of vaseline cotton and a small ferro rod in the butt of the knife. Also 3 small ranger bands around the handle for a little extra grip.
I've work with the two glocks w and w/o back saw ad i prefer the no back saw one. (i think is the Glock 78). The back saw only useful for notching, nor for sawing cause is too wide and slow. The knife and sheath are very good for outdoor use, very compact , light, and reliable
I never knew my Glock knife had a hollow handle! It is small, but some survival items could be inserted into it. Apparently, you can also slide it onto the end of a stick to make a spear. The hole would allow a nail to be placed through the wood to hold it in place. Learned something today!
The plug can be popped off to expose the "bayonet lug" which is about an inch deep by half inch wide water tight capsule. I keep a small wad of cotton and vaseline with a small ferro rod in mine for a last resort sure fire. Edit to add: In order to run cordage through the hole you'll either have to trim down the plug or remove it entirely. Either way, take note this will remove the water tight aspect of the capsule.
I’m not sure if anyone mentioned roomed this but you can pop out that cap on the bottom to reveal that tube opening for a bayonet just use a knife or screwdriver to get under it and pry little by little
Blackie, I been thinking about getting Model 81 Glock Knife, Thanks for sharing your information. I did ask you a few weeks ago on Thursday Night Live about the Model 81, also I do have a Gerber Mark I .Thanks Again Sir for sharing your opinion and review on the Model 81 . Tim L.
been thinking about picking up an E-tool for camping and bushcrafting. the Glock E-tool is high up on my list right now for it's versatility and weight and carry size.
I broke the tip off of mine, then just reformed a tip on a grinder. Still works great. Also, you can stipple the handle with a soldering iron to get better grip. Mine was like $30 bucks. Great deal!
Yes, the butt cap comes off and there is a small hollow steel tube on the last 2 inches or so. I cut threads into the tube and put a short bolt into it to make a pommel hammer.
i thought i was crazy, when you took off the sheath, i said that "blade is curved." then i wondered if it was the camera angle. thank you for confirming it, Blackie.
Glock Ges also make solid military Hand Grenades filled with Steel Balls - and their folding Entrenching Tool ("shovel") is very versatile & strong with a saw-blade in the handle.
i would not thin out the tip. reason: have a k-bar steak knife. while in the sheath i lost the tip(1/8") & had to re-grind a tip onto it. toss up between the 80 & 81. for sparking on a ferro rod.
It is indeed intended to be used as a bayonet on a Steyr AUG, it is practically indestructible but not exactly the best bush knife lol. However it is a great knife and the old kabar o ring trick also works on the handle for grip if need be, also it unlocks from the sheath easier if you actuate the lock with your thumb and your pointer finger can be used on the guard to help pull it out if it's a strange angle or something. Thanks for showing!
The FM 78 (Feldmesser 78) was intended as a fieldknife and the Stey AUG and StG 58 bayonet, therefore the hole in the handle end and the "bottleopener" on the guard. The blade is sturdier than classical bayonets, so it's more a fieldknife than a bayonet. The FM 81 with the serrations is a version only allowed for civilian use. The famous Rüdiger "Sir Vival" Nehberg used a self converted version of this knife for some of his survival expeditions. That made this knife very famous in outdoor, survival and bushcraft communities in Europe, especially in Germany. But that does not mean, that it would be "the best" survival knife.
Rumor has it with the plug out of the knife handle, it's a bayonet for the Steyr AUG. I don't know for sure though... 78 is the original & both make decent throwing knifes for chits & giggles at camp...
I have no need for a self defense or fighting knife where I live. If someone demanded my wallet and I was carrying a knife I would simply hand over my wallet. My knife is a tool, I don’t think about it as a weapon
since i am an Austrian and own a Glock 81 myself i was smiling trough the entire awesome Review, thank you Sir for makeing me smile and take care

Die "Säge"am Glock 81 ist eine Raspel um Nuten für Fallen herzustellen
The Glock Shovels need to be reviewed.

Mr. Thomas, what’s with the BSA National Camping School patch that you are wearing? Got several of those. 👍🏻
Great life review!👍
I believe you can use it as a bayonet on the Steyr AUG series of combat rifles hence the bent cross guard and hollow butt

Love the Glock knife and shovel!
Nice combat knife
The two rear indentions are for securing the bayonet. The bottle opener too👊👍

I did the same. 1/2”-13 tap and a grade 8 bolt works great!

Do you find that saw back usefull?
You mention Vietnam, just how old are you? You do not look old enough. I am 67 and too young to be part of the Vietnam War. I turned 18 in 1974
Iv used obe for awwhile it held up well I did know a guy from oda 709 carryied one as a main
Lay the edge back it makes way more slicey
Why is the knife bent?😮
Excellent knife...one of the best for the money

Among all my knives, I have two fm78's. One in use and one is spare. The 78 is no longer in production. The 81 was not for the military.
