Yeah stellar tera + contrary looks super strong. For hydrapple a defensive tera made sense since it has good coverage already and draco/leaf storm are more powerful and give better boosts than tera blast
Skill swapping Supersweet Syrup in order to not only get an Evassion lowering on the enemy just so you hit Draco meteors and Leaf storms constantly with hydrapple abusing the Contrary boost, BUT also skill swapping for the enemy in order to get an EVASION BOOST because of Contrary has to be the most funny and EVIL things there is.
@@foofootoo If the battle carried on, then I would've loved if you just kept the Incineroar alive to just keep Skill Swapping Supersweet Syrup and Intimidate around. I bet the moment you did it must've been a real mindf*** for the opponent.

@@treven8742 Malamar doesn't get it. That's a risky set up needing to swap Contrary to your Entrainmenter to then Entrainment Contrary over onto your next swap. I'm so glad we can finally start talking about Hydrapple now the DLC is out. If you saw the supposed "leaked design" [where there were two Dipplin-looking worms weaving upwards like a DNA strand], did you like that look, and how does Hydrapple's official design compare, foo? My disappointment was immeasurable, and my day was ruined.
Hydrapple is such a cool mon, my favourite of the newly released ones for sure. Great moves, abilities, and stats! That's weird about dragon cheer... definitely should be sound based!
Omg i hadnt seen the hydrapple reveal, the design is blowing me away! Ive always loved the applin line so much, this is a dream come true. I dont know if it will find a real niche in competitive but thanks for giving it love right out the gate.

Liked and subbed for the simple fact that you took your time to come up with something epic rather than covering what 1000 other youtubers made vids about on day 1.
Something I noticed with Hydrapple is that it gets access to Hydro Pump, which could work well for the same reason as Hypnosis on Malamar. May be a better option than Earth Power in terms of hitting Fire and Rock types, alongside Ground and Flying types
I used Malamar on my team for the BB League hoping to skill swap contrary onto Drayton’s Archaludon so the +1 sp atk boost from electro shot would be -1 instead, but he never used the move. It worked out in the end though since he wasn’t getting any defense boosts from stamina.
That first match was basically flawless lol. I love seeing such a fun strat pick up some wins! Don't know if it would make it far in best of 3 open team sheets, but for closed team sheets on cart ladder I bet it would be a lot of fun!
Imagine Skill-Swapping Blissey's 'Serene Grace' ability onto Fickle Beam Hydrapple. I wonder if Fickle Beam's chance is affected like the chance to freeze from Ice Punch, or the chance to Paralyze from Thunderbolt?
Unfortunately from initial testing it seems like fickle beam does not get boosted by serene grace. It is not boosted by sheer force so the double damage activation is not treated like a normal secondary effect of a move
@@foofootoo Oh, well I would've called that a missed opportunity, but now I can kind of see that a 60% chance for an 'All-Out' Fickle Beam would be kinda busted. ^^; Still though, if it was affected by Serene Grace... man, what a monster Hydrapple would've been.
I absolutely adore Hydrapple’s design, I’m happy to see him be apart of some funky strategies. Gotta hunt a 0 speed one soon. I want that Minecraft Gapple on the team immediately
Something I learned recently is if a pokemon holds a power training item (for EV training), the offspring is guaranteed to inherit the specific IV of the parent corresponding to the power item. If you have a 0 speed Ditto or something compatible, it's a good way of going about it
Since the game just came out I definitely want to try out other things first since there's so much I haven't even touched yet, but I might revisit it in the future. Tbh I'm happy to be the ideas guy and leave the iteration up to the competitive players getting results at tournaments

I think the paste performs better but if you want a ready to use rental for the game then use the rental code. I would suggest quick guard bullet punch scizor is a better replacement for iron crown because it can threaten to KO flutter mane before it attacks and still can protect malamar from fake out with quick guard
As soon as I open my UA-cam I saw your video, and thought wow I just saw this combo just now, and what are the odds it was you 😂! Love that idea it was really cool I'm actually hunting to do it myself rn!
Good luck in getting into it! Fun stuff like this is how I got interested in competitive too. Just don't get too demoralised if it doesn't work right away, it's important to learn the fundamentals before trying out the weirder stuff
A combo I have been thinking of is Blissey with Serene Grace and skill swap with Hydrapple to turn Fickle Beam into a 60% chance to double power. Thoughts?
Okay, Foo has to do this because I'm mighty curious as to if Fickle Beam works like Ice Punch, or Thunderbolt with the effect of the chance. I need to see this in action, Foo.
I ran a similar set in sword and shield using Alolan Exegutor with draco meteor, leaf storm and overheat. Took longer to set up though and no one was really bulky enough, but glad to see the strat has become more viable again! 😅
So glad to see that Malamar got Skill Swap to gift Hydrapple and Reshiram the Contrary ability. I learned today that Revavroom and Scovillain, among others, got access to the new, physical Fire-type attack Temper Flare. Additionally, Flygon got access to the new Psychic-type move Psychic Noise as well as the new Fairy-type move Alluring Voice. While Skeledirge also got Alluring Voice, it's weird to me that it can't be taught Burning Jealousy.
Halloo, did you consindered losing earth power's coverage for giga drain's sustain? Again, awesome strat. Seems to be really interesting into the coming metagame kekw
I think the coverage is more important since all steel types would wall you otherwise and you need to be able to get OHKOs. Amoonguss with pollen puff is there if you need healing
I am thinking about making my own set with the Malamar Hydrapple combo and I was thinking of using Sinistcha over Amoonguss. Move wise I had Matcha Gotcha, Trick Room, Rage Powder, and Hex but I might swap hex out because it gets access to what I’m calling the Memento Gambit, either you lower your opponents stats or further boost Hydrapple if it isn’t at +6 yet
Honestly I would parting shot into malamar while it still has contraty to give it a lil boost when switching out incineroar that way it also becomes threatening in trick room, since both opponents are going to get intimidated by incin anyway and already lose power
You were thinking with 100% of brain power that second battle, i didn't even see that coming but i said to myself what IF, he swaps with the Incin😂 i hate your team so much 🤣🤣🤣🤣great video bro! and may we never cross paths in battles
Does Serene Grace work with Fickle Beam? Can we give it a shot? Edit: I also remembered that Water Pledge + Fire Pledge stacks a buff on your side of the field for 4 turns which gives a serene grace type effect which stacks with serene grace multiplicitively, so it would be 30%*4= 120% meaning it would always go off. But that would require a lot of set up and probably wouldn't be worth.
This was the first thing I though when I saw this move but I've dived deep into the murky depths of the smogon mechanics testing forums and someone said they had used Serene Grace Fickle Beam 48 times in game and got a 28% activation rate so it doesn't look like it works :( it's also not boosted by sheer force so the effect seems to be similar to knock off in that it's not a typical secondary effect.
Im curious how this new contray strat will work with pokemon who rely on buffing themselves with moves would be. Could you imagine using malamar to give contrary to a belly drum pokemon?!
For this team, would Sinistcha work in place of the Amoongus? Feel like having Sinistcha as the backup trick room setter as well as rage powder user frees up the dusclops slot for another mon who might better synergize.
That was my thought as well, only think I see Amoonguss having over Sinistcha is Spore and not taking super effective damage from Ghost/Dark. Pollen puff is nice for healing Hydrapple but a few other Pokémon learn it, first that comes to mind is Florges who’s a pretty good Sp Def tank, it’s ability makes it so Grass types can’t get status conditions, and could help against Urshifu or Chein-Pao with Moonblast.
Is Applin the first time we have a pokemon that can only evolve twice if it goes down a certain evolution path? And has the option to evolve only once with the other path(s)? I can’t recall anything like this before.
I just made this take, but with anilape instead of hydrapple and its disgusting. The anihlape a standard max bulk tera fairy set. A contrary close combat is so much better than bulk up and the stat boosts from intimidate invalidate incineroar. The ever growing bulk plus rage fist makes it an even better monster.
I can see contrary spin out revavroom doing well. A 100 power 100 accuracy steel attack that increases the user's speed stat by 2 stages and revavroom has good attack and a speed stat of 90.
@@foofootoo Hmm, good point. Either way, thanks for this video! Appletun was my favorite Pokemon in Sword and Shield, and while Hydrapple isn't an Appletun evolution (I'm SUPER sad apple pie boi didn't get one), I've been wanting to find a way to make Hydrapple work, and this is perfect.
huh i didn't realize malamar got skill swap now that is actually insanely funny to just have easy access to contrary on a lot of pokemon now contrary and with it malamar has always been one of my favourite funny abilities and i was already incredibly excited to see malamar in the dlc the evasion boost from the skill swap intimidate is exactly what i mean, there was so much going on there just from that one move the synergy between the two alone is actually insane, but i am really hyped to see what other pokemon can do with contrary
I wanted to test skill swap malamar onto Hitmontop to get double intimidates and then boost defenses with close combat XD Looks like this is even better

huh i didn't realize malamar got skill swap now that is actually insanely funny to just have easy access to contrary on a lot of pokemon now
contrary and with it malamar has always been one of my favourite funny abilities and i was already incredibly excited to see malamar in the dlc
the evasion boost from the skill swap intimidate is exactly what i mean, there was so much going on there just from that one move
the synergy between the two alone is actually insane, but i am really hyped to see what other pokemon can do with contrary
Considering the new Tera Blast Stellar and Contrary synergy, this type of strategy will explode in popularity.
Often times I feel like I'm playing checkers, and you're playing chess. When I watched this video, I feel like I was playing tic-tac-toe
This is such a cool team!
I wanted to test skill swap malamar onto Hitmontop to get double intimidates and then boost defenses with close combat XD
Looks like this is even better
I wanted so much to do this with Alolan Exeggutor when I found my long boy was in the dlc.
Either ability
Evs: 252 HP, the rest in sp.atk or defenses
Assault Vest
Leaf Storm
Draco Meteor
Superpower
Giga Drain
Buff special stats for stronger GD heals, SP for those damn random eviolite Chanseys and for physical defense.
Shame it can't have Superpower anymore. Hydrapple seems damn fun though. If I ever get a shiny Applin, I'll be giving these seven dudes a shot.
