Great video! You explain the process very clear and no bs. I am about to make my first cutting board and all your videos have come in handy for a new wood worker such as myself. Thanks for making these! Plus im a huge hockey fan so the penalty box name is a great one.
Awesome! Thanks for the kind comment! Let me know if you ever have any questions and make sure To tag me if you post your cutting boards! I would love to see them. Whos your hockey team?
@@PenaltyBoxWoodshop I'm from Michigan but the Maple leafs are my team for the past 25 years lol and we finally have a decent team so hockey is exciting again. I definitely tag you as soon as I start the project. With 1 toddler and 1 on the way free time is little to none lol but wood working has become an addiction and it's been fun learning new stuff. Who's your team?
Shaun M Nice! They have some superstars for sure! Ive been a preds fan from the first game they played. I know how it is with woodworking and kids. It’s a balance for sure! Keep grinding and good luck!
Well, that’s not true. Actually, I guess it’s kind of true but not that exaggerated. If you had my exact tools, then yes it would be thousands of dollars and you would need some space. But. If you wanted to do woodworking, and I assume you do since your watching this video, then the basic saws and tools will be needed. You can buy wood that is pre-milled and you can eliminate needing the planer and jointer. A table saw is pretty basic and there is little way to get around that one but I bought my first one used for $100. Then you have a Miter saw (or use a circular saw or even a hand saw) sander (you could hand sand them), hand plane (get one used at a yard sale for $20 or so) and clamps (use pipe clamps they are cheap and great). Use the hand plane to flatten the boards and create the chamfers and sand them down. Boom, you can make a cutting board with basic tools. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment! Hope you enjoyed the video!
@@PenaltyBoxWoodshop dude, i don't know what else to tell you but to rewatch your own video and see the machinery and equipment you use to produce the final result. don't get me wrong; it's not my intention to diss you. That was just the first thing that crossed my mind as I was watching it. It would hurt my insides to put a blade on that cutting board after all that effort.
Haha I understand completely, thank you for the compliment, and I wasnt meaning to be ugly. I was just saying that your comment isnt entirely true and can be discouraging to others. I do agree with you 100% that I use some expensive tools in the video. But, I intended to make it obvious that the milling process is optional, I only mill some of the wood and its pretty well known that wood comes pre-milled if you want to purchase it that way. I give options for flattening without using the planer and actually use the hand plane on one of the boards, and the rest of the tools are pretty basic tools. Now, if you buy those basic tools new and name brand it can get pretty expensive but the majority of hobby woodworkers making cutting boards are not doing that. Again, Im not trying to be argumentative and I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment.
@@gareth6517 to make ANYTHING, you need at least something. Either you are looking for a reason to complain why you can't achieve something or you can't use reason to determine how to make something with what you have. People on UA-cam have built up their tools and skills over time, it didn't just all magically appear. They aren't saying this is the only way to build something, they are saying this is how i built something. Start making projects with the tools you have, judging that you can't make particular project because you lack some tools is defeatist and looking for excuses to complain.
Whats your favorite wood combinations for cutting boards? Walnut, Maple and Padauk is definitely my favorite!
both came out nice
Thank you
Excellent idea to make them a combo. Great job.
Thanks!

Great video Jesse! You shared lots of good info and explained the reasoning behind your process 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you, Mike! I really appreciate it!
These are just awesome. Outstanding work and detail.

Great video and a great topic! Can't beat the walnut/maple combo.
Thanks brother! I appreciate it and I love that combo as well!

Awesome! Glad it was helpful!
Great looking set buddy!
Thank you, brother! Always appreciated!
The continuous grain across the board with the wide strip looks great. Also you need to get some bench dogs for them dog holes lol
Thanks! Hahah I have them just get in a hurry sometimes. Not good but you know how it is sometimes.
Beautiful work Jess! Thank you! Rich
Rich Ragan Thank you, friend! I appreciate your support!

Rich Ragan Thank you, sir. That’s very kind of you and I appreciate the support

Awesome video man. Good idea with the cauls! Or however you spell it lol.
Hahah you’re guess is as good as mine! Thanks brother!
Nice! What was the thickness of board and tray?
my God that brand is sharp! What brand? You very talented and your boards gorgeous
Thanks! It’s a Gearheart brand
Nice job 👍🏻
Thanks!
Those came out great looking man! How thick do you aim for your cutting boards to be?
Thanks! I try not to go any thinner than 3/4” but like to be over 1” whenever possible
Nice and easy boards.
Where do you get your stamp?
I get it from @Gearheart
We’re do I get the measurements from your great video
Very nice. Where do you get your hardwood?
Thank you! I get most of my stuff from a local place called Mimms. Some of my stock is from Craigslist buys as well
Nice board how many inches is your metal handle
Thanks! If I’m being honest I can not remember. It was a standard cabinet handle that I got from Lowe’s or Home Depot
@@PenaltyBoxWoodshop those boards are awesome 👍 I will be completing mind this weekend.
Looks great! I need to get one of those brands, tired of torching.
Thanks Rich! I love that brand!
what's the defrince ?
I need to get me some bigger tools, fab job...
Haha
What is your jointer?
It’s an old powermatic
@@PenaltyBoxWoodshop thank you
What thickness are both pieces?
Just shy of an inch but I don’t recommend going under an inch. These have been okay but the thinner you go the more your likely to warp
All you need in order to make a cutting board is thousands of dollars worth of equipment and a spare garage worth of space!
