I've been wearing a hat for years. After decades of surfing, I'd rather look a little kooky and reduce the leather face situation that I see going on with a lot of older surfers. Plus, the visiblity is so much better with a hat on, I hate not wearing one and squinting the whole time.
I use the Dakine indo which is fantastic as well, it has a stiff front brim so it won’t get in your face when duck diving etc. my buddy has both the Dakine Indo and Kiola trucker and he says both are really good so u can’t go wrong. the bucket hats will cover your ears and neck much better so if u don’t have long hair go bucket.
Thanks for the recommendation! Good to here the comparison as well. The other thing I really like about the Kaiola is even the back of the trucker hat style is UV protected, not standard mesh style. But yup, bucket hat for the win for ultimate protection!
Great review per usual. Do you ‘flip it up’ when paddling? I got the Dakine ‘similar’ version and realized my neck got a bit achey with the bill hitting the board. Started flipping it up helped some but maybe shorter brims do end up being better..but then block less sun. Lol oh the paradox
Glad you found it helpful Travis! Some times I do, sometimes I don’t, generally if I’m having to duck dive a lot I will just to get it out of the way a bit more, and once I’m through I’ll flick it back down for added sun protection 🤙

100% that's why I now wear one every session too! Absolute must for Aussie summer and also morning sessions when the sun is super low and glary!

I’m surprised anyone in Australia surfs without a hat. Isn’t there a hole in the ozone layer there? Insane amounts of UV.
hahaha yeah the sun over here can be pretty intense, even on cloudy days! A decent surf hat is a must!
